What to Do if You Lose Access to Your Authenticator App

Start with another sign-in method that was already registered to the account: a backup code, another signed-in device, an alternate phone number, a passkey, a hardware security key or a previously trusted computer. If none is available, use the account provider’s official recovery process. Reinstalling an authenticator app by itself usually cannot recreate codes that existed only on a lost phone.

Do these checks before trying account recovery

An authenticator app is a code generator for individual websites and services; it is not the authority that decides whether you can recover an account. Losing the app may affect several unrelated accounts, and each service has its own accepted recovery methods. Make a list of every account that used the app before changing anything.

1. Identify the account and the authenticator situation

  • Write down the service you are trying to enter and the username or email address associated with it.
  • Determine whether the phone is merely unavailable, damaged, reset, lost or stolen.
  • Note which authenticator you used and whether its codes were synchronized to a cloud account or stored only on the device.
  • Check whether you are still signed in to the service in a browser, tablet or another phone. An active session may let you add a replacement method without entering a code from the missing phone.

2. Try every method the account already offers

Method When it can work Important limitation
Backup or recovery code You saved single-use codes when two-step verification was enabled. A used code is inactive. Creating a new set normally invalidates the previous set.
Another signed-in device A phone, tablet or browser is still trusted by the service. The session may expire, or the service may still request an additional check for sensitive changes.
Alternate phone number A second number was enrolled for text or voice verification. The number must still be under your control and the account must support phone verification.
Passkey A passkey was saved on another device or in a supported password manager. A passkey is useful only if it was registered before the lockout and you can unlock the device that stores it.
Hardware security key A compatible key was registered in advance. Buying a key now does not bypass a current lockout; it must already be enrolled.
Trusted computer The account previously marked a computer as trusted. Trust may have been cleared, and some accounts still ask for a second step after a password or security change.

Use the option shown by the account’s own sign-in screen. Do not send a code to anyone who contacts you claiming to be support, and do not pay a third party that promises to bypass two-factor authentication.

If you cannot use any alternate method

Open the provider’s official account-recovery page from its normal website or app and complete the prompts. Use a device, browser, location and recovery email or phone that you normally use when possible. Recovery systems compare information about account ownership; support staff generally cannot simply switch off the second factor on request.

  • POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
  • WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
  • FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
  • TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
  • BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.

Follow the recovery result exactly. Some providers restore access immediately, while others place the request under review. Google’s account-recovery guidance says verification can take 3–5 business days when no other second step is available. That is a possible period described by Google, not a guarantee for every account.

Google Account and Google Authenticator

Use an enrolled Google sign-in alternative

Google Account Help lists several ways to complete a sign-in when the primary phone is unavailable:

  1. Approve the sign-in on another phone that is already signed in to the Google Account.
  2. Choose another phone number that was added to 2-Step Verification.
  3. Enter one of the saved backup codes.
  4. Use a hardware security key that was previously added.
  5. Use a passkey on another device.
  6. Try a computer that was previously marked as trusted.

If a trusted computer lets you in, go directly to the account’s security settings and add a replacement method before signing out. If none of these choices appears, use Google’s official account-recovery flow and answer every prompt as accurately as possible.

Understand whether Google Authenticator codes were synchronized

Google Authenticator can synchronize codes across devices when you sign in to a Google Account inside the app. If synchronization was enabled, installing Authenticator on a replacement phone and signing in to the same Google Account may bring the synchronized entries back.

Synchronization is different from a manual transfer. Google’s manual transfer process requires the old device. If the old phone is gone and the codes were not synchronized, reinstalling Authenticator cannot recreate the unavailable secrets. You must visit each connected website, remove the old authenticator registration and enroll the new phone.

Your situation What to do What the result means
Authenticator was synchronized to your Google Account Install the app on the new phone and sign in to the same Google Account. Synchronized entries may appear; verify a code with each service before relying on it.
Codes were local-only and the old phone is available Use Authenticator’s transfer function while both devices are present. The entries can be moved from the original device.
Codes were local-only and the old phone is lost or destroyed Recover each website through its own backup method, then remove and re-enroll Authenticator. There is no general app-level restore for secrets that existed only on the missing phone.

Secure a lost or stolen Google phone

If the phone may be in someone else’s hands, sign out of it from your Google Account and change the Google Account password. Google also says that you can ask your carrier to transfer your number to a new phone or SIM card: “If you lose your phone, you can ask your carrier to transfer your phone number to a new phone or SIM card.” A transferred number may restore text or voice prompts, but only for accounts that still offer that method.

After you regain the Google Account, review every service that used unsynchronized Authenticator codes. Remove the old device or authenticator entry where the service allows it, enroll the replacement phone and test a sign-in in a private browser window.

Microsoft Authenticator and Microsoft accounts

Restore from backup before signing in normally

Microsoft’s documented recovery path starts with Restore from backup or Begin recovery in Authenticator. The backup must be associated with the personal Microsoft account used for that backup or recovery. If you cannot access that backup account, Microsoft says support agents cannot restore the Authenticator entries.

Backup behavior depends on the phone platform and account type:

Account or backup condition Microsoft’s documented behavior
iOS backup restored to Android, or Android backup restored to iOS Not supported; an iOS backup cannot be restored to Android and vice versa.
Work or school account The account name may be restored, but you must sign in again to activate Authenticator for that account.
Passwordless Microsoft account Sign-in is required again after restore.
Some personal or third-party one-time-password accounts The codes may be restored, depending on the entry and backup available.

A restored account name is not proof that the second factor is active. Open the entry, complete the requested sign-in and confirm that a current code or approval works.

Personal Microsoft account: add a new method if you can still sign in

If a browser or another device still lets you into a personal Microsoft account, open the account’s Security page and add another available verification method. Microsoft lists email, Authenticator and passkey options; a phone option is not offered for every account. Add and verify the replacement method before deleting the old one.

Work or school Microsoft Entra account

An organization controls which authentication methods and recovery policies are enabled. Microsoft Entra documentation describes a recovery capability for complete authentication lockout only when the organization has configured the required identity-verification process. After successful verification, the organization can permit new methods to be registered.

Because that capability is not automatically enabled for every tenant, contact your employer’s helpdesk or your school administrator. Tell them that the old authenticator is unavailable, identify the device change or loss, and follow the organization’s identity-verification procedure. Do not assume that consumer Microsoft-account steps apply to a managed account.

Accounts from other providers

Banks, social networks, developer services and cryptocurrency platforms may use different recovery rules. Sign in through the service’s official website or app, select options such as Try another way, Can’t access your code? or Account recovery, and use only the contact details already associated with the account.

  • Some services issue recovery codes only once and will not display them again.
  • Some require a waiting period, identity documents or a support ticket.
  • Some deliberately refuse to remove two-factor authentication without strong proof of ownership.
  • A service may let you reset the password but still require the old authenticator for withdrawals, API access or other high-risk actions.

Search the provider’s official help center from its own domain rather than using a phone number or link sent in an unsolicited message. A person who asks for your password, one-time code or backup code is not helping you recover the account.

Why reinstalling the app often does not work

Time-based authenticator codes are generated from a secret shared between the app and each service. The app does not normally keep a central copy that a provider can reconstruct for every account. A new installation has no knowledge of a local-only secret unless it is restored from a supported backup or transferred from the original device.

Cloud backup also has boundaries. It may be tied to a particular backup account, operating-system platform and account type. Restoring an app can bring back an entry’s name without completing the registration, especially for work, school and passwordless accounts. Treat every restored entry as unverified until the service accepts a code or approval and shows the new device as active.

What to do immediately after you regain access

  1. Open the account’s security settings. Find the page that lists two-step verification, multi-factor authentication or sign-in methods.
  2. Register the replacement authenticator. Scan the new QR code or enter the setup key in the authenticator you now control.
  3. Add an independent backup method. Choose a supported passkey on another device, a second number, a hardware security key or securely stored recovery codes.
  4. Generate fresh recovery codes. Store them somewhere separate from the phone they protect. For Google, creating a new set invalidates the previous set, and used codes become inactive.
  5. Test before removing anything. Sign out of a low-risk browser session or use a private window, then verify the replacement method and one recovery option.
  6. Revoke the missing method. Remove the lost phone, old authenticator entry or obsolete number wherever the service provides that control.
  7. Record the recovery route. Note which backup account, device and administrator helped, without recording passwords or one-time codes in an insecure note.

Prevent the next lockout

  • Enable the authenticator’s supported backup feature while you are still signed in, and periodically confirm that a recent backup exists.
  • Keep at least one independent method for each important service. A second device, passkey, hardware security key or single-use recovery codes are more useful when they are not stored with the primary phone.
  • Store recovery codes in a secure location separate from the phone, and never share them with someone who contacts you.
  • For work and school accounts, learn the organization’s helpdesk procedure before an emergency and keep the correct support channel available offline.
  • When replacing a phone, enroll the new authenticator and verify it first; only then erase or remove the old device.
  • Review security settings after a number transfer, password change or suspected theft so that old sessions and methods are no longer trusted.

Quick decision guide

Question Best next action
Do you have a backup code, passkey, security key or other signed-in device? Use it now, then add and test a replacement authenticator.
Was the authenticator synchronized or backed up? Restore it using the same backup account and compatible platform, then verify every entry.
Was the phone lost or stolen? Secure the phone and account, change the main password where appropriate, and revoke the old method after access returns.
Are the codes local-only and the phone unavailable? Recover each service separately; do not expect a reinstall to recreate the codes.
Is the account controlled by an employer or school? Contact the administrator or helpdesk because recovery depends on organizational policy.
Has every alternate method failed? Use the provider’s official recovery flow and follow its identity-verification and waiting-period instructions.
