What to Do If You Installed a Spyware App on Your Phone

Do not rush to delete the app. If someone is monitoring your phone, they may see searches, calls, messages, location data and even changes you make while trying to remove it. Use a phone or computer that person has never accessed to get help and make a plan. If you face immediate danger, contact local emergency services through a safe means of communication.

Battery drain, overheating or a suspicious app can justify checking your phone, but none proves spyware. Monitoring may instead involve an online account, a backup or another device. The safest next step depends on your situation, the risk of alerting the person and whether evidence could matter.

1. Get help from a safer device first

Assume the suspected monitor could notice searches, calls, notifications, scans, uninstall attempts or password changes on the phone. Do not use that phone to look up a hotline, message an advocate or announce that you are investigating if doing so could increase danger.

Use a borrowed phone, a library computer, a work device or a pay-as-you-go phone that the person has not physically accessed. The Coalition Against Stalkerware advises using a device the suspected monitor has never had physical access to. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) similarly says, “If you’re concerned your phone might be monitored, consider leaving it behind when you’re seeking help.” Read the FTC’s guidance at consumer.ftc.gov/articles/stalkerware-what-know.

An advocate or technology-safety specialist can help you weigh removal, evidence, account security and the possibility of retaliation. In the United States, the FTC lists the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE (7233), its live chat at thehotline.org, and text START to 88788 (information listed June 2026). Those options are U.S.-specific; elsewhere, contact a local survivor-support organization or emergency service from a safe device. Do not search for these details on the suspected phone.

2. Decide whether any immediate action is safe

There is no universally safe instruction to uninstall spyware immediately. Removing an app, changing a setting, running a scan or contacting someone can send an alert, reveal that you are taking action or provoke further harassment. It can also destroy information that an advocate, lawyer or investigator might need.

The Coalition’s removal guidance states: “Only attempt to remove stalkerware if you believe it is safe to do so.” Discuss a personalized safety plan from a safer device. The plan may include where you can go, who can help, how the other person might respond and whether you need to preserve evidence before making changes. If you are in immediate danger, prioritize getting to safety and contacting local emergency services rather than troubleshooting the phone.

3. Preserve information only when doing so will not increase danger

Before resetting, replacing or altering the phone, consider whether documentation could help you obtain support or report abuse. An advocate can explain safer ways to preserve information in your jurisdiction. Possible records include dates and times of suspicious events, messages that show threats, unexpected account alerts and photographs of relevant screens. Keep copies somewhere the suspected monitor cannot access.

Do not collect evidence if the act of doing so could expose you or escalate abuse. The FTC notes that advocates can discuss preservation, while the Coalition warns that deleting stalkerware may delete evidence. Never put documentation ahead of your immediate safety.

4. Treat symptoms as clues, not proof

Ask whether your phone is behaving differently, but avoid diagnosing spyware from one symptom. The FTC suggests questions such as:

  • “Am I unexpectedly using more data?”
  • “Is my phone overheating?”
  • Does another person know your exact location, private conversations or who you text?
  • Has the phone restarted unexpectedly or shown notifications you do not recognize?

These signs can have ordinary causes, including an aging battery, a software update, a faulty app or poor network conditions. Some stalkerware has no obvious side effects. Conversely, someone may be tracking you through an email, cloud, social-media or location-sharing account without installing an app on the phone.

The Coalition notes that Android stalkerware can be hidden or installed outside the official app store. On iPhone and iPad, monitoring may draw data from iCloud backups rather than a visible app. These are examples, not a complete diagnostic method. Menu names and security controls vary by device and software version, so do not follow a generic menu sequence that could alter the phone unexpectedly. A specialist can help inspect the right areas without assuming that a single finding confirms compromise.

5. Compare removal and replacement choices

Choose an option with an advocate or qualified technology-safety professional when possible. Consider three questions: Could this alert the person? Could it erase useful evidence? Could the unwanted access return through an account or backup?

Option When it may fit Important cautions
Specialist or advocate-assisted assessment You are unsure what is happening or whether a change is safe. Contact the helper from a safer device. Ask about alerts, retaliation, evidence and escalation before touching the phone.
Security scan You want an additional detection signal and can safely run it. A clean result does not prove the phone is clean. An alert may be visible, and automatic removal may destroy evidence or reveal your actions.
Factory reset You plan to keep the phone and have decided a reset is safe. A reset can delete evidence and may not fix separate account access. Set the phone up as new; restoring a complete old app backup can reinstall the unwanted app.
New phone with a separate account A safer device is feasible and acquiring it will not create additional risk. It can be expensive or unsafe to obtain. Plan the purchase, account and hand-off with a trusted advocate where appropriate.
Manual app removal You have reliable, platform-specific assistance and judge removal safe. Hidden apps, elevated privileges or off-store installation can make removal difficult. The person may be alerted, and evidence may be lost.

The Coalition describes a new phone as the best way to get rid of stalkerware and a factory reset as almost as effective, while emphasizing cost, safety, evidence and reinstallation risks. The FTC presents a new phone as a possible safest option and says to consider a full reset if you keep the existing phone. Neither source promises that a reset removes every form of tracking or account compromise.

6. If you choose a factory reset, avoid restoring the problem

Make this decision only after safety planning. A reset removes local data and apps, so it can destroy evidence and may be noticed. Back up only information you genuinely need and can safely retain; an indiscriminate backup may include the unwanted app or settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. From a safer device, confirm that a reset will not put you at greater risk and decide what evidence, contacts and files must be preserved.
  2. Record essential information in a safe location rather than relying on a full device image.
  3. Perform the manufacturer’s full factory reset according to its current instructions.
  4. During setup, choose the option to configure the phone as new. Do not restore a complete old app backup.
  5. Reinstall only the apps you need from the official app store. The FTC’s instruction is: “Instead, download them again from the app store.”
  6. Before signing in, update the operating system when it is safe. Review account sessions and recovery methods from a safer device.

A reset addresses software on the handset, not necessarily an attacker who still controls your email, cloud account, social-media account, location sharing or recovery phone number. Secure those accounts separately.

7. Secure accounts and the phone after the immediate response

Change accounts from a device the person cannot access

Start with your primary email account because it can reset other passwords. Then address Apple or Google accounts, social media, banking, messaging, work and health services. Use a strong, unique password for each account and enable two-factor authentication. Review signed-in devices, active sessions, forwarding rules, recovery email addresses, recovery phone numbers and location-sharing permissions. Remove devices or sessions you do not recognize only when doing so is safe; a sudden sign-out can be visible.

Protect physical access

Set an automatic screen lock and a passcode the suspected monitor does not know. Avoid a predictable code or one reused elsewhere. The Coalition notes that stalkerware commonly depends on someone obtaining physical access to an unlocked phone; changing the passcode helps reduce the chance of reinstallation, but it does not repair an already-compromised account.

Keep software current when safe

Install operating-system and app updates from official sources when your safety plan allows. Updates can fix security flaws, but the update itself may change battery use, generate notifications or draw attention, so coordinate timing with an advocate if monitoring is suspected.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. Understand what security scans can and cannot tell you

Security tools can provide useful evidence, but detection is imperfect. EFF and AV-Comparatives’ Stalkerware Test 2025 evaluated 17 commercial stalkerware apps in September 2025 on a non-rooted Samsung Galaxy A36 running Android 15 over Wi-Fi, using the latest app versions available at that time. Detection varied substantially. Google Play Protect detected only around half of the tested stalkerware. The report was published in November 2025 at eff.org/files/2025/11/05/avc_stalkerware_2025.pdf.

That dated Android test is not a universal ranking, a guarantee for your phone or evidence about iPhones. A clean scan cannot establish that no monitoring exists, particularly when access occurs through an account or backup. Some products may issue a generic warning or recommend immediate removal without explaining the personal-safety consequences. If you run a scan, first decide whether the notification, log or removal action could be seen by the suspected monitor.

9. Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using the suspected phone to seek help: searches and calls can reveal your plan.
  • Uninstalling on impulse: removal can trigger retaliation or erase evidence.
  • Assuming one symptom proves spyware: battery, heat and data changes have many causes.
  • Restoring every app after a reset: an old backup can put the unwanted software back.
  • Changing only the phone: an attacker with account access may continue tracking after a reset or replacement.
  • Relying on one scan: scanners can miss stalkerware, and results are not a safety plan.
  • Documenting at any cost: evidence collection is optional when it increases danger.

10. A safer sequence when you are unsure

  1. Move to a device the suspected monitor has never accessed.
  2. Contact a local survivor-support organization, technology-safety specialist or emergency service if danger is immediate.
  3. Explain what you observed without claiming spyware is confirmed.
  4. Ask whether to preserve evidence, scan, remove, reset or replace the phone—and when.
  5. Secure critical accounts and recovery methods from the safer device.
  6. Choose a phone change only when the safety, cost and evidence consequences are acceptable.
  7. Afterward, use a new passcode, official app sources and carefully selected account and app restores.

If the phone is being monitored, the right action is the one that protects you, not the one that makes the device look clean fastest. A trusted advocate can help you make that decision without exposing your plan.
