Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The correct recovery step depends on what the passphrase protects. If it is the password for an ordinary website, use that service’s official password-reset process. If it is a password-manager master password, it may protect the encryption key for your entire vault, and the provider may be unable to restore the saved passwords. A recovery phrase or key is a separate credential, not automatically the forgotten password.
Before resetting anything, identify the service and credential, check every recovery method you configured in advance, and read the data-loss warning. A reset that gives you a usable new account may not recover the encrypted data that was in the old one.

First identify which secret you forgot
“Password from a passphrase” can describe several different situations. The app, account type and device determine what is possible, so do not start by deleting an account or repeatedly guessing.
| What you may have forgotten | How to recognize it | First action |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary account password | It signs you in to an email, shopping, social, banking or other website. | Open the service’s genuine sign-in page and choose its password-reset option. |
| Password-manager master password | It unlocks a vault containing many other passwords. | Use the manager’s documented recovery methods before attempting a reset. |
| Recovery phrase or recovery key | It was supplied or displayed during setup as a backup or account-recovery secret. | Look for the securely stored copy; do not assume it is the master password. |
| Encrypted file or device password | It unlocks a disk, archive, document or local profile rather than an online account. | Check the product’s own recovery-key, backup and administrator options. |
| Passkey or device unlock | You normally approve access with a fingerprint, PIN, security key or device prompt. | Use another registered device or the service’s account-recovery route. |
Write down the exact service name, account email or username, device, browser and the last time access worked. Those details prevent you from applying instructions for one product to another.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Do these safety checks before trying recovery
- Use the installed app or type the provider’s address yourself. Do not enter a password, recovery phrase or one-time code into a link from an unsolicited email, text or social-media message.
- Stop after a few thoughtful guesses. Some services add delays, lockouts or fraud checks after repeated failures.
- Check whether you are in the correct country, data region, team workspace or account email. A successful login to the wrong region can look like an empty account.
- Keep any recovery code private. Support staff should not need your complete master password or phrase.
- If another device is still unlocked, do not sign out, uninstall the app or clear its data until you have read the provider’s preservation or export instructions.
Recovering an ordinary website password
For a normal online account, the provider’s reset flow is usually the intended solution. Exact checks differ, but the sequence below avoids common traps.
- Open the official sign-in page. Use the service’s app or enter its known address manually. Confirm that the domain and spelling are correct before typing anything.
- Select “Forgot password?” or the equivalent. Enter the account identifier requested. If you have several addresses, try the one used when the account was created.
- Complete the identity check. The service may send a link or code to a registered email address or phone, ask for an authenticator approval, or use another account-recovery check. Follow only the prompts shown in the official app or site.
- Create a new, unique password. A long passphrase is fine, but do not reuse the lost password or a small variation of it on another service. Save the replacement in a password manager or another protected system.
- Review active sessions and recovery details. Where the account offers it, sign out unknown devices, verify the recovery email and phone, regenerate backup codes and enable multifactor authentication.
If you no longer control the registered email, phone or authenticator, use the service’s account-recovery form rather than paying an unrelated “recovery” service. Some accounts cannot be restored when their verification methods are unavailable; that decision belongs to the provider.
When the forgotten secret is a password-manager master password
A master password is not merely a sign-in phrase. In many designs it protects, or helps derive, the key that decrypts the vault. The provider may authenticate your account without possessing that decryption key. The UK National Cyber Security Centre explains the consequence plainly: “If the decryption key is lost, it should not be possible to reset it and recover vault data.” This security model prevents a provider or attacker from simply looking up every password in your vault.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Therefore, a “forgot master password” process can have one of three outcomes: an existing recovery method unlocks the original vault; an administrator or approved contact helps you regain access under the service’s rules; or a reset creates a new empty account while the old encrypted contents remain inaccessible or are deleted. Check which outcome applies before confirming anything destructive.
Check every pre-existing access route
Availability is service-specific. Bitwarden’s support documentation describes several routes, but you should not assume another manager offers them or that they work without earlier setup.
- Correct account and data region: verify the server or region and the exact email address. A second account can appear to be a lost vault.
- Another signed-in app or browser: inspect a phone, tablet, computer or browser extension that may still have an authorized session. Do not close it while deciding what to do next.
- Stored hint: some services let you configure a hint. Treat it as a clue, not proof that the provider can reveal the password.
- Recovery key or phrase: enter it only in the manager’s official recovery screen. A recovery phrase may authorize a reset or unlock a key; it is not necessarily the master password.
- Emergency contact: a previously approved person may be able to start or approve an emergency-access process. This can involve a waiting period and may expose the vault according to rules you selected.
- Organization administrator: a work or school account may support administrator-assisted recovery. Ask the administrator to use the documented procedure, not to request your master password.
- Known-device approval or encryption-enabled passkey: some services can use a previously trusted device or a registered passkey to authorize recovery. This only works if it was enrolled before lockout.
Try one route at a time and record what it reports. A failed attempt is different from a completed reset; do not continue past a warning just to see the next screen.

Read the reset and deletion warning carefully
“Reset access” and “recover old encrypted data” are separate operations. The following documented behaviors illustrate why the wording matters; they are not universal rules for every manager.
| Service or guidance | What it establishes | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Bitwarden support guidance | If none of its available options grants access, “there is no way for Bitwarden to recover the account or its data.” | Do not assume support can decrypt a vault after all configured recovery routes fail. |
| NordPass full reset guidance | Losing both the master password and recovery code can lead to a full reset that deletes vault items. | Export or otherwise preserve data first if you still have a valid session. |
| National Cyber Security Centre guidance | A lost decryption key should not be reset in a way that recovers the encrypted vault. | Strong encryption deliberately limits provider-assisted recovery. |
Read the final confirmation screen for phrases such as “delete vault,” “new account,” “remove encrypted data” or “cannot be undone.” If the wording is unclear, stop and consult the service’s current official help page for the exact product and account type.
If a device or browser is still unlocked
An open session may be your last opportunity to preserve information, but it is also a security risk. Follow the provider’s documented method rather than improvising.

- Keep the session intact. Do not sign out, clear cookies, remove the extension, reset the app or erase the device.
- Confirm that the vault is current. Check synchronization status and note whether recent changes are present.
- Configure a supported recovery method. If the service allows changing the master password or enrolling a recovery key while unlocked, read the consequences and complete the process from its security settings.
- Export only when necessary. An export can be plain text or otherwise unprotected. Use the provider’s official export format and destination, then move it immediately to encrypted storage with restricted access.
- Delete unnecessary copies securely. Remove exports from downloads folders, email attachments, cloud-sync folders, recycle bins and shared computers after you have confirmed the protected copy works.
- Finish with a clean recovery plan. Record where the approved recovery material is stored and test the method without exposing the vault to an untrusted person.
Never upload a vault export to a public file-sharing service or paste its contents into a support chat. Anyone who obtains an unencrypted export may have every account credential it contains.

Accepting that an encrypted vault is unrecoverable can be difficult, but repeatedly guessing or paying an unofficial “unlock” service will not recreate a missing decryption key. Protect the accounts you can still reach in a deliberate order.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Secure your primary email first. It controls many password resets. Change its password through the official flow, verify recovery details, sign out unknown sessions and enable multifactor authentication.
- Protect financial, work and identity accounts. Contact the institution through a known channel if you suspect exposure or cannot sign in. Ask about temporary locks, fraud monitoring and replacement authentication devices.
- Reset accounts one by one. Use each service’s official recovery process and create a different replacement password for every account.
- Replace shared or reused credentials. If the lost phrase was reused anywhere, treat every reuse as compromised and change those accounts even if there is no evidence of an attack.
- Revoke old access where possible. Remove unknown sessions, application tokens, API keys, backup codes and remembered devices.
- Document what is finished. Keep a private checklist of accounts changed, recovery methods added and subscriptions or devices that still need attention.
Do not choose a replacement by adding a number or punctuation mark to the old phrase. Attackers commonly try predictable variations.

Do not confuse a recovery phrase with the forgotten password
A recovery phrase or key is usually generated for a specific recovery function. It may authorize a reset, restore an encryption key or prove control of an account. It does not automatically reveal a master password, and entering it in the wrong product can expose it.
Keeper’s setup guidance, for example, says its phrase is shown only during setup, must remain in its exact order and cannot be retrieved by Keeper if it is lost. That is why a phrase should be copied exactly and stored in a secure physical location such as a locked safe, not in an unprotected note, screenshot or ordinary notebook left in a desk. A written recovery record can help only when it contains the correct recovery material; it cannot recover an ordinary password that was never recorded.
Encrypted files and device accounts need their own procedure
If the passphrase protects a disk, archive, document or local user profile, a website password-reset link will not help. Look for a recovery key, backup administrator account, escrowed key or another device that can decrypt the data. Check the product’s official documentation before changing the device or reinstalling software.

How to evaluate recovery features before choosing a password manager
Convenient recovery can also create another path to the credentials in your vault. Compare managers using these questions rather than assuming that “forgot password” means the same thing everywhere.
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Which recovery methods exist, and must they be enabled before lockout? | A method discovered after you forget the master password is usually too late. |
| Who can authorize recovery? | An emergency contact, administrator or trusted device may help you, but each adds an account-access risk that should be understood. |
| Does a reset preserve or destroy encrypted vault data? | A new login is not useful if the old vault is deleted or remains cryptographically inaccessible. |
| Which devices and browsers support the method? | A recovery option limited to one old phone is fragile if that device is lost or wiped. |
| How are exports and recovery materials protected? | Plain-text exports and unsecured digital copies can turn a recovery aid into a complete credential leak. |
The NCSC recommends understanding who can recover an account and balancing recovery convenience against the risk that someone else could gain access to stored credentials.
Quick Recap
Set up prevention while you still have access
- Enable every recovery method you are comfortable with, then confirm how it behaves in a test or help workflow.
- Store a recovery phrase or key exactly as displayed, preferably on paper or another durable medium kept in a locked, private location.
- Keep more than one secure copy in separate locations if the service’s threat model and your safety requirements allow it.
- Maintain an authorized second device, but protect its screen lock, operating system and backups.
- Give emergency access or administrator recovery only to people and organizations you trust, and understand what they could see.
- Use unique passwords and multifactor authentication for the email account that controls resets.
- Review recovery contacts, devices and backup codes after changing a phone number, leaving an organization or replacing a device.
A practical decision path
- If the forgotten phrase belongs to an ordinary website, use that site’s official reset flow.
- If it unlocks a password manager, look for an existing session, recovery key or phrase, emergency contact, administrator, trusted device or supported passkey before resetting.
- If a warning says the reset deletes the vault, stop and preserve any accessible data first.
- If no route can recover the encrypted contents, reset critical accounts individually and replace every reused password.
- After recovery, record the service’s approved methods and store the recovery material securely so the same lockout does not happen again.
