What to Do If You Find an Old Coin

If you find an old coin, leave it uncleaned, record exactly where and how you found it, photograph both sides and the surrounding context, and check the local reporting and ownership rules before keeping, selling, mailing or moving it. A coin in soil, on a beach, on private land, in a building, or among other objects may be treated differently under local law.

Do not assume that age makes the coin yours or that an old-looking coin is valuable. Legal status, provenance, authenticity and condition must be settled before a responsible valuation.

What to do in the first few minutes

  1. Stop disturbing the find. Do not dig further, move nearby objects or separate coins that appear to belong together. If the coin may be archaeological or part of a hoard, leave the surrounding material in place and ask a heritage authority or museum for instructions.
  2. Record the location and circumstances. Note the country, region, property, date, exact spot as practically as possible, and whether you found it in soil, sand, water, a wall, a building, a collection or loose on the ground. Record what tool or activity exposed it and whether other coins or artefacts were nearby.
  3. Photograph before handling more than necessary. Take clear images of both faces, the edge and the surrounding find spot if doing so is safe and lawful. Include a scale nearby rather than pressing a ruler against the coin. Keep the original files and write down when and where each image was made.
  4. Check the law where the coin was found. Before retaining, transporting, posting, selling or exporting it, identify the responsible authority and any deadline. The result can depend on whether the item is archaeological material, treasure, wreck material, found property or part of a group.
  5. Preserve it without trying to improve its appearance. Put it on a clean, soft surface and avoid rubbing, scraping, soaking or chemicals. Detailed handling and storage guidance appears below.
  6. Seek the right kind of help. A museum or numismatic specialist can help identify an object; a dealer or auctioneer can provide a market valuation after legal and provenance questions are settled. Identification, authentication, grading and valuation are separate services.

Why the find location and context matter

The same date and design can have very different significance depending on where a coin was recovered. A coin found loose in a house may be an item of lost property. A coin embedded in soil, recovered from a wreck site or found with several others may be archaeological material or part of a hoard. Land ownership, public access, marine rules and cultural-heritage law can all affect what you may do next.

Context can also help experts identify the object. Soil layers, nearby artefacts, a purse or container, and the position of other coins may reveal whether it was deposited recently or belongs to an older archaeological deposit. Once the context is disturbed, that evidence may be impossible to recover. Treat the location as part of the find, not as disposable background information.

Reporting and ownership rules depend on jurisdiction

There is no worldwide rule that every old coin must be reported. Use the following official examples as a starting point, then confirm the rule for the exact country and circumstances of your find.

Place or scheme What the official guidance says Important qualification
England and Wales Check whether the object is treasure or wreck material. Potential treasure must be reported to a local Finds Liaison Officer within 14 days. Wreck material follows a separate process with a 28-day reporting deadline. GOV.UK reporting guidance Scotland and Northern Ireland have different rules.
Ireland The National Museum of Ireland asks finders to report archaeological objects promptly and send a photograph with as much detail as possible. It states that archaeological objects found without a known owner are State property. National Museum of Ireland guidance This is specific to Irish archaeological finds, not a rule for every country.
Netherlands An archaeological find, including an old coin, must be reported to the Cultural Heritage Agency. If the owner cannot be identified, the government explains a treasure-finder arrangement requiring the find to be shared with the landowner. Government of the Netherlands guidance Confirm how the arrangement applies to your discovery and property.

The Portable Antiquities Scheme records archaeological objects discovered by the public in England and Wales and explains the legal reporting requirement for Treasure under the Treasure Act 1996. Recording a find through the scheme does not, by itself, establish ownership.

If you are unsure whom to contact

  • Contact the national museum, regional archaeological service, heritage authority or local Finds Liaison Officer for the place of discovery.
  • Describe the location, circumstances, photographs and any associated objects before sending the coin anywhere.
  • Ask whether the coin may legally be retained, transported or submitted for examination while a decision is pending.
  • Keep copies of correspondence and the original photographs as part of the coin’s provenance record.

How to handle and store the coin safely

The United States Mint advises holding a coin by its edges between thumb and forefinger over a soft surface. Its collector guidance also recommends a cool, dry place and holders made from acid-free material and plastic free of PVC. These measures apply to ordinary collection storage only after you are permitted to retain and handle the coin.

Do not clean, polish or scrape it

Leave dirt, corrosion and encrustation in place unless a qualified conservator or the responsible heritage authority tells you otherwise. The United States Mint states: “Polishing and/or cleaning coins can reduce their value.” Brushing and rubbing can scratch delicate surfaces, while chemicals or soaking can remove evidence that helps establish age and authenticity. An excavated coin may need specialist conservation rather than household cleaning.

Temporary storage

If an authority has not yet given instructions, place the coin in a stable, dry location where it will not roll or rub against other objects. Avoid PVC sleeves, loose pockets with abrasive surfaces and damp containers. Do not apply oil, wax, adhesive or corrosion treatments. If the coin is wet or visibly fragile, ask a conservator before attempting to dry or package it.

  • Country, ruler, portrait or other identifying figure.
  • Denomination and any date or date-like symbol.
  • Inscriptions, lettering, language and symbols.
  • Mint mark, if present. The United States Mint explains that mint marks identify where a coin was made.
  • Metal colour and apparent composition, without filing or testing it.
  • Diameter, thickness and edge pattern, measured carefully without scratching.
  • Distinctive imagery, damage, holes, bends, deposits or unusual die features.

Do not infer a date from a partial numeral or assume a familiar portrait proves the country. Photograph the coin in good, even light from directly above, then make a second set showing the edge and any marks. A high-quality magnifying glass can help you read a date or mint mark; it should not touch the surface.

Use a museum identification service appropriately

The British Museum’s Money and Medals department can often identify coins, tokens, coin weights, paper money and medals from digital images. It accepts up to five objects at one time, but it does not provide valuations or certificates of authentication. Submit the photographs, measurements, inscriptions and find context, and describe any uncertainty rather than presenting a guess as fact. See the service description at Money and Medals.

Identification, authentication, grading and valuation are different

Service Main question answered What it may use or provide Limit
Museum or heritage identification What object is this? Digital photographs, inscriptions, measurements and archaeological context; often an identification opinion. The British Museum service does not provide a valuation or authentication certificate.
Authentication Is it genuine? Examination by an appropriate specialist, with the exact service and evidence depending on the coin. An identification alone is not authentication.
Professional grading How does its condition compare with grading standards? The United States Mint describes a numerical scale from 1 to 70 and says wear is usually the biggest factor in grade. Grading is subjective; a grade is not a market price.
Dealer or auctioneer valuation What might it sell for in a particular market? The exact coin, authenticity, condition, provenance and current market context. Seek this only after legal and provenance issues are settled.

The United States Mint’s collecting guidance recommends a current reference covering dates, mint marks, major varieties, grading guidelines and prices. Choose one for the coin’s country and period. A catalogue entry can narrow identification, but it cannot establish that your specimen is genuine or legally yours.

How to approach value responsibly

Age alone does not determine price. A common, heavily worn coin may be worth little, while a less old coin with rarity, strong condition, a scarce mint mark or documented provenance may attract serious interest. Wear is a major grading factor, and grading opinions can differ.

  1. Confirm the legal route for retaining and selling the find.
  2. Obtain the best-supported identification you can, including country, denomination, date, mint mark and variety.
  3. Ask whether authentication or professional grading is appropriate for that type of coin.
  4. Assemble provenance: the find location, date, circumstances, photographs, reports and any authority correspondence.
  5. Request an independent valuation from a suitable specialist dealer or auctioneer. Ask whether the figure is an estimate, an auction expectation or an offer to buy.

Do not estimate value from a headline asking price for a superficially similar coin. The comparison may differ in authenticity, variety, grade, provenance, buyer fees and selling venue. A museum identification is useful evidence, but it is not an appraisal.

Special situations that require extra caution

A coin found in soil or with other objects

Stop digging and preserve the arrangement. Photograph the find in place if lawful and safe, note the position of each item and contact the relevant heritage authority. A group of coins may have archaeological significance even when individual pieces look ordinary.

A coin found at sea, on a beach or near a wreck

Do not assume that beach access gives you ownership. Wreck material can have a separate reporting process; in England and Wales, GOV.UK specifies a 28-day deadline for that process. Other countries and waters have different rules. Record the precise location and check the maritime or heritage authority before moving, exporting or selling the coin.

A coin found on private property

Permission to enter land does not automatically settle ownership of an object found there. Record the landowner or occupier, avoid private excavation and obtain advice for the jurisdiction. In the Netherlands, for example, the government describes a finder-and-landowner sharing arrangement when the original owner cannot be identified.

A coin found inside a house, vehicle or purchased item

Treat it as potentially lost property until you can establish a lawful owner or transfer. Keep the purchase receipt, photographs and any messages with the seller. Ask local authorities or a museum what reporting route applies before selling or altering it.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Cleaning it to make the date easier to read.
  • Testing the metal with acid, files, magnets or abrasive tools.
  • Putting it in a PVC holder or damp container.
  • Separating a group of coins or digging around a possible archaeological deposit.
  • Mailing it to an expert before confirming that transport is lawful.
  • Assuming a museum will authenticate or value it.
  • Assuming a high online asking price is evidence of what your coin is worth.
  • Publishing the exact find location publicly when doing so could expose a sensitive site.

A short decision checklist

  • Context recorded? Location, date, circumstances and associated objects are written down.
  • Condition preserved? The coin is uncleaned, unpolished and protected from rubbing or moisture.
  • Rules checked? The authority and deadline for the discovery location are confirmed.
  • Identification supported? Photos, measurements, inscriptions and mint-mark details are ready for an appropriate expert.
  • Value assessed separately? Any price comes from a qualified dealer or auctioneer after legality, authenticity, condition and provenance are considered.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
