Do not try to rescue, treat, or transport it yourself. The right contact depends on where you are; the listed Indonesian and Malaysian numbers below are regional, not universal.
What to do first
- Stop at a safe distance. Do not approach, touch, chase, corner, handle, feed, or try to move the orangutan. Avoid blocking its route or attracting a crowd, and do not go closer to inspect possible injuries. Indonesia’s Ministry of Forestry instructs the public to keep away, avoid disturbing or feeding wildlife, and report sightings to BKSDA or local forestry officials (Ministry of Forestry).
- Contact the authority for the location. Give the clearest location you can, when you saw the animal, whether it appears injured or trapped, and whether people or immediate hazards are nearby.
- Document only from where you already are, if safe. A photo or video may help responders, but do not move closer or delay calling to get one. The ministry’s September 2026 rescue notice advises documenting only when safe and leaving intervention to officials.
- Wait for trained responders without intervening. Do not attempt capture, treatment, transport, or feeding. If people or pets are nearby, or there is traffic, fire, or another immediate hazard, tell the dispatcher and keep others away without approaching the orangutan.
These steps apply whether the orangutan appears injured, weak, trapped, or simply out of place. A sighting near a village, plantation, road, or other developed area is a reason to report what you see, not a reason to try to shepherd the animal somewhere else. Let the responsible authority decide what response is appropriate.

Who to call depends on where you are
There is no single number in the cited official guidance that covers every orangutan sighting. First identify the country and area where you saw the animal, then contact the authority responsible for wildlife there. A hotline for one region should not be assumed to apply across a border or elsewhere in the same country.
Indonesia
Contact the local Balai Konservasi Sumber Daya Alam (BKSDA) office or a local forestry official. For sightings in Kalimantan, an Indonesia Ministry of Forestry notice dated 17 September 2026 lists these rescue call-center numbers:

These are regional contacts, not a nationwide Indonesian hotline. Emergency contact details can change, so check the current ministry or local BKSDA information if possible. If you are not in one of the listed Kalimantan provinces, do not assume one of these numbers is the correct responder for your location; seek the relevant local BKSDA office or forestry official.
Peninsular Malaysia
Malaysia’s Department of Wildlife and National Parks (PERHILITAN) lists 1-800-88-5151 on its official contact page. That contact applies to Peninsular Malaysia; the listed information does not establish the correct authority for Sabah or Sarawak. PERHILITAN’s contact information and a separate official hotline page give conflicting operating hours, so check the current official page rather than relying on a particular schedule.
Other locations
Contact the local wildlife authority, forestry department, park authority, or emergency service as appropriate. There is no single contact in the cited official information that covers every place where orangutans may be found. Tell the authority where you are and ask to be routed to the responsible wildlife responders. In particular, do not use the Kalimantan call centers or the Peninsular Malaysia hotline as if they were universal contacts.

What information helps responders
Keep your report factual and concise. Share the animal’s location as precisely as you safely can, when you saw it, and what you observed. Say whether it seems injured, weak, trapped, or unable to move normally, but do not approach to confirm. Mention nearby people, pets, roads, fire, or other hazards so responders can assess the situation. Do not promise or assume a particular response time.
- Use landmarks, a road name, a nearby settlement, or another clear location reference.
- Describe what you can see from a safe position; distinguish an observation from a guess about the cause.
- Share a photo or video only if you took it without moving closer and doing so was safe.
- Keep your phone available in case officials need clarification, but do not remain in a dangerous spot.
If you are unsure whether the animal is actually injured or displaced, say so. “It is sitting near the road and has not moved while I have been watching” is a description; “it has a broken leg” is a conclusion you should not try to verify at close range. Responders need the location and what you can safely observe, not a diagnosis.

Also tell the dispatcher if the animal is near people, pets, traffic, fire, or another immediate hazard. Do not approach to manage those risks yourself. If other people are present, you can ask them to keep back without crowding, surrounding, or trying to direct the orangutan. Prioritize getting yourself to a safe position and giving responders accurate information.
Why you should not attempt a rescue
An orangutan is a powerful wild ape, and approaching it can put both people and the animal at risk. A frightened, injured, or trapped animal may react unpredictably; trying to catch or move it can also worsen an injury or make it harder for responders to reach it. The ministry’s public guidance is to keep distance, not handle or feed wildlife, and report the sighting.

Wanting to help is understandable, particularly when an animal looks weak or is in an exposed place. But a passerby cannot determine safely from close range what care is needed, whether the animal can move, or how it should be evacuated. Trying to carry, restrain, or treat it is not a substitute for contacting the people responsible for wildlife response. Do not attempt to lure it with food or guide it away from a road or settlement.
Rescue and care involve trained teams. Indonesia’s September 2026 ministry notice describes coordinated work by BKSDA, wildlife rescue units, and conservation partners. In a separate Ketapang case, the ministry described evacuation by government and partner teams, veterinary observation, and later transfer to rehabilitation care. The Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation says orangutans arriving at its rehabilitation centres receive veterinary assessment and treatment and are quarantined before progressing through rehabilitation (BOS Foundation: Orangutan Reintroduction). Those steps are not something a passerby should try to reproduce in the field.
This distinction matters: the public role is to report and observe safely; responders determine whether and how to intervene. The ministry’s account shows that an organized response may involve multiple agencies and partners, followed by veterinary observation and further care. That is why the useful next step is a clear report to the local authority, rather than attempting to arrange capture, transport, or treatment yourself.

How to interpret distance guidance
“Keep well back” is safer than treating any single distance as a guarantee. The Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation’s visitor code sets a minimum distance of 10 metres and prohibits contact in its managed settings (BOS Foundation: Ethical Guidelines and Code of Conduct). That is visitor guidance for those settings, not a universal safe-distance rule for an unexpected encounter. If you can do so without approaching, increase your distance and avoid blocking the animal’s route.

In an unexpected sighting, terrain, the animal’s position, and nearby hazards vary. Do not treat the visitor-setting minimum as permission to approach within 10 metres, or as proof that a particular distance is safe in every situation. The practical instruction is not to close the gap to measure it: remain well back, do not corner the animal, and report what you can see from a safe place.
What not to do
- Do not feed it. Official Indonesian guidance specifically says not to feed wildlife. Do not offer food to persuade it to come closer or move in a particular direction.
- Do not touch, restrain, or carry it. Leave handling and evacuation to trained responders.
- Do not give medicine or try to provide treatment. Do not attempt first aid or put anything near its mouth; describe what you observe and let trained responders assess its condition.
- Do not chase it or surround it for a better view. Keep people back and avoid blocking its route where you can do so without approaching.
- Do not treat a picture as more important than safety. Document only from your existing safe position. It is fine to report without a photo.
- Do not assume a hotline covers your area. Use the regional contacts only for the jurisdictions specified, and verify current details when possible.
Frequently asked questions
Should I rescue a stranded orangutan myself?
No. Do not catch, move, carry, restrain, feed, or treat it. Contact the wildlife authority responsible for that area, give the location and your observations, and leave any intervention to trained responders.
Should I feed or give water to an injured orangutan?
No. Indonesia’s Ministry of Forestry explicitly tells the public not to feed wildlife, and members of the public should not try to treat or handle the animal. Report its condition instead; do not put food or anything else near it.
Can I take a photo or video?
Only if you can do so safely from where you already are. Do not move closer, draw a crowd, or delay contacting the authority to get a picture. A clear location and factual description are useful even if you have no image.

How far away should I stay?
Keep well back and do not approach. The BOS Foundation’s 10-metre visitor guidance applies to its managed settings, not as a universal safe distance for an unexpected encounter. Do not use it as a target for getting closer.
Who do I call if the orangutan is near a village or plantation?
Call the wildlife authority responsible for the location. In Indonesia, the Ministry of Forestry identifies BKSDA or local forestry officials; regional Kalimantan call-center numbers are listed above. In Peninsular Malaysia, PERHILITAN lists 1-800-88-5151. For other areas, contact the local wildlife, forestry, or park authority, or an appropriate emergency service.
What if the listed number does not cover my area or I cannot reach it?
The Indonesian numbers shown are for specified Kalimantan provinces, and PERHILITAN’s listed hotline is for Peninsular Malaysia. They are not universal. Check the current official contact information for the relevant local authority or ask a local forestry, wildlife, or park office to route your report. The cited sources do not establish a complete directory for every orangutan-range location.
Should I wait beside the orangutan until help arrives?
Do not remain in a dangerous place or approach the animal while waiting. Give responders a safe way to contact you if they need clarification. No response time is guaranteed by the cited guidance.
