A signature or label can point toward an artist, but it does not establish authorship or value. Record what you bought, research the marks and ownership history, and seek an independent specialist’s advice if the evidence still looks promising.
Document the purchase and painting first
Create a record while the details are fresh. Keep the receipt and any messages or paperwork from the seller; note the purchase date, price, location, seller or estate-sale company, and any description given at the sale.

Make a separate object record with the painting’s known or tentative title, attributed artist, medium, dimensions, inscriptions, labels, and visible condition. Photograph the entire front and back, then take clear close-ups of signatures, labels, damage, and markings on the frame. Do not remove a label or alter the painting to inspect it.

Research the artist, marks, and history
Use museum and artist-biography resources to investigate a signature, monogram, label, or other mark. The Smithsonian guide also points readers toward resources for researching provenance and exhibition history. Treat an apparent signature, label, or online image match as a lead—not proof that the work is by a particular artist.
Look for a consistent body of evidence: an attribution supported by artist-specific sources, a plausible ownership and exhibition history, and details of the work that align with the suspected artist and period. A single auction result or an asking price is weak evidence on its own. The IRS cautions that price guides and auction results are not automatically reliable evidence of fair market value; they need to be analyzed and supported.

For a possible match or valuation, relevant comparisons include the authentication basis, provenance and exhibition record, artist and period, medium and dimensions, condition and restoration, and actual comparable sales. An image search can help locate candidates, but it cannot settle those questions by itself.
Protect the painting and its evidence
Do not clean, restore, or reframe a potentially important work before consulting a qualified specialist. Condition and restoration can affect valuation, and altering the object may also remove useful evidence. Keep your purchase documents, photographs, object record, and research notes together.

For conservation work, use a trained professional rather than attempting repairs yourself. The Smithsonian suggests asking a local art museum, gallery, or historical society for reputable conservator referrals. Its research resources are not an authentication or appraisal service for private objects.
When and how to seek an appraisal
If your research leaves a credible possibility that the painting is significant, contact an independent appraiser with verifiable education and experience valuing that kind of art. Ask whether the person has relevant expertise, what research and written documentation the fee includes, and whether there is a conflict of interest. State the purpose before agreeing to the assignment: a possible-sale estimate, insurance valuation, estate matter, and tax appraisal are different tasks.

For a U.S. qualified appraisal, the IRS describes standards that include relevant expertise and a detailed account of the object, its acquisition, ownership history, and authenticity, along with a professional-quality image and supporting evidence such as comparable sales and exhibition history. The IRS also says a qualified appraisal fee cannot be based on a percentage of the appraised value. Its guidance describes authentication due diligence that may include consulting the relevant catalogue raisonné, an artist foundation number, a comprehensive archive, or a certificate from an authority or expert recognized for that artist.

For a U.S. charitable donation, IRS Publication 561 (December 2025) gives these federal substantiation thresholds for donated art:
Best Value
- DecoArt Thrift Flip Multi-Surface Paint - Real Red, 2 oz
- Specific uses for product : Interior
| Claimed deduction or appraised value | IRS requirement or option |
|---|---|
| More than $5,000 | A claimed charitable deduction for donated art generally requires a qualified appraisal and Form 8283. |
| $20,000 or more | Attach the complete appraisal for an art deduction. |
| $50,000 or more | The donor may request an IRS Statement of Value before filing the return. |
These figures concern U.S. charitable-donation substantiation. They are not market-value estimates and do not apply simply because someone found or purchased a painting.

If you find a credible reason to think the painting may have been stolen, pause plans to resell or transfer it while the concern is checked. Preserve your receipt and object documentation, and consult local law enforcement or a lawyer familiar with the relevant jurisdiction. Ownership and resale rights depend on local law and the facts of the transaction.
The FBI’s National Stolen Art File is an online database of stolen art and cultural property submitted by law-enforcement agencies. The FBI says people with information about an item listed there can submit a tip. Its instructions about contacting police and requesting a database submission are directed to theft victims and institutions, not stated as a universal obligation for every purchaser.
