Keep people and pets out of the area, do not corner or touch the animal, and observe it from a safe distance. If it is injured, weak, distressed, unable to leave, or possibly a bat that may have contacted a person, call the appropriate local wildlife or public-health authority for instructions. The safest response depends on the animal, its condition, and what happened; guidance cited here comes from U.S. agencies and does not replace local rules.
Start with safety, then decide what kind of help is needed
A small mammal inside may be a bat, a healthy young animal that has wandered in, or an animal that is sick or injured. There is no single safe procedure for all of them. Begin by reducing contact and disturbance, not by trying to catch or identify it at close range.

- Move people and pets away. Close off access to the room or area if you can do so without approaching the animal. Children and pets should remain separated while you decide what to do.
- Do not corner, chase, or grab it. Stay back and watch from a safe distance. Do not use a broom or other object to drive it toward an exit.
- Note what you can safely observe. Is it flying, moving normally, or unable to leave? Does it appear injured, weak, unusually exposed, or distressed? You do not need to identify the species before calling for help.
- Choose the response based on the situation. A bat with possible human contact, an animal in poor condition, and a healthy baby mammal call for different next steps.
For help locating the right contact, the Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association handbook lists wildlife agencies, animal control, and wildlife veterinarians as possible routes to a wildlife rehabilitator. The right authorized responder and any applicable laws vary by location.
Use the animal’s condition and circumstances to choose a response
| What you observe | What to do |
|---|---|
| A bat is flying in a room; no one is known to have had contact with it | Keep people and pets out, use passive steps to provide an exit as described below, and follow local wildlife instructions. |
| A bat may have bitten or touched someone, or someone was asleep or unable to report contact | Contact local public-health authorities promptly. Do not release the bat before asking what to do. |
| Any mammal appears injured, weak, in poor condition, distressed, or unable to leave | Contact a local wildlife rehabilitator, wildlife agency, animal control, or other appropriate authority for instructions. |
| A young animal appears healthy and there may be a nest or den nearby | Do not assume it is orphaned or move it without local guidance. The appropriate response depends on the species and circumstances. |
| Bats are entering repeatedly or a colony may be present | Ask the wildlife agency about local rules and safe timing before sealing openings or arranging exclusion. |
When calling, describe the animal’s location, whether it is moving or flying, visible signs of injury or distress, and whether a person or pet may have touched it. If the animal is a bat, mention whether anyone was asleep or otherwise unable to know if contact occurred. These details help an agency or rehabilitator give situation-specific instructions without requiring you to approach the animal.

If the animal is a bat
When a bat is flying and no contact is known
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service guidance recommends isolating the room from children and pets, opening an exterior exit, and turning off indoor lights. Do not chase the bat or wave a broom at it: pursuit can make the situation harder to manage and brings people closer to the animal.
Agency advice about lighting is not uniform. California Department of Fish and Wildlife recommends turning lights off for a healthy bat that can fly out; the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission advises turning lights on so a person can see the bat and says bats are not blind or afraid of light. Follow instructions from your local wildlife or public-health authority rather than treating either lighting approach as universal.
If the bat stops flying or cannot find its way out
Do not touch a bat with bare hands. California Department of Fish and Wildlife describes a capture-and-release approach for a healthy indoor bat that cannot find its way out: wait until it stops flying, then use gloves and a towel to place it in a covered, ventilated container; put the container outdoors in an elevated place and release the bat at dusk or night. That is agency guidance for the circumstances it describes, not a direction to capture every bat. If anyone may have had contact, seek public-health instructions before releasing it, because authorities may want the bat retained for testing.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service says that, in its catch-and-release guidance, weather should be above 50°F with no precipitation or high winds. Treat that as the federal agency’s stated condition for its context, not as a universal release threshold. Local instructions may differ, and a bat with possible human contact should not be released before public-health guidance.
If a person or pet may have had contact
Never handle a bat bare-handed. If someone was bitten or suspects a bite, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service says to call the state health department immediately and keep the bat contained while following that authority’s instructions about testing and medical care. California Department of Fish and Wildlife likewise advises contacting local public-health authorities before releasing a bat if contact may have occurred.
A sleeping person, a young child, or someone unable to report contact may not be able to rule out an encounter. Tell public health exactly what is known and unknown, and follow its local instructions. Do not decide on your own that a bat is safe to release simply because no bite is visible.

If it looks injured, weak, or distressed
Visible injury, weakness, poor body condition, distress, or inability to leave are reasons to contact a wildlife rehabilitator or appropriate agency. Keep people and pets away while arranging help. Avoid handling the animal or attempting care unless a qualified local responder gives you specific instructions.

Useful contacts may include a licensed or otherwise authorized wildlife rehabilitator, a state or provincial wildlife agency, animal control, or a wildlife veterinarian. Which organization can respond, and whether a permit or other authorization is required, depends on local law. If the first office cannot assist, ask it to identify the appropriate local contact.
If it may be a baby or juvenile
A young animal found alone is not automatically orphaned. Some mothers leave their young hidden while they feed, and a person approaching the young may not see the adult nearby. First keep children and pets away and avoid moving the animal. Whether it needs help depends on the species, its condition, and whether a nest or den can be located safely.

Fawns
California Department of Fish and Wildlife says healthy fawns are often hidden while the mother feeds nearby. Its guidance is to stay away and keep children and pets away. If a fawn has already been moved, the agency says it can be returned to its original hiding place and that a doe will not abandon it simply because a person touched it. Obvious injury, poor condition, or signs of distress warrant contacting a rehabilitator or regional wildlife office.
Rabbits and hares
California’s guidance distinguishes blind, helpless cottontail nestlings in shallow nests from fully furred, open-eyed juvenile rabbits and young hares. It advises returning a healthy nestling rabbit to its nest if it has been displaced, while leaving a healthy fully furred juvenile rabbit or young hare alone. A rabbit or hare in distress should be referred to a rehabilitator. Do not apply those California species notes as a universal identification or rescue rule elsewhere.
Squirrels and other young mammals
California Department of Fish and Wildlife says a healthy baby squirrel may be returned to its nest or, as appropriate, a branch or burrow; mothers will try to reunite with their young. The agency’s phrase for healthy juvenile squirrels and healthy outdoor bats is “Leave it there, if you care!”—a reminder for those specific contexts, not a rule for every animal found inside a building.

The Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association’s older wildlife-care handbook uses a practical decision flow for baby mammals: consider whether the young animal is hurt or sick, whether a nest or den can be found, and whether the mother retrieves it. The flowchart includes a 24-hour observation instruction, but that interval should not be applied automatically. Species, weather, the animal’s condition, and local expert advice matter; contact a rehabilitator or wildlife agency if you are unsure what is safe.

A single bat indoors does not, by itself, mean that a colony is likely to form; the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission makes that distinction in its guidance. Repeated entries or evidence of multiple bats call for a building-level response rather than repeated attempts to deal with individual animals.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service says a bat may fit through a crevice as small as a quarter and recommends looking for exterior gaps after recurring incidents. Do not treat that size as a complete inspection specification for every bat species or building. The agency also warns against sealing a colony out without checking with state wildlife authorities, because legal protections may apply. Hibernating bats should not be surprised by a winter eviction.

That is Florida agency guidance, not a guarantee that the same timing, equipment, or legal process applies elsewhere. Before exclusion, ask the local wildlife agency about permits, protected species, and timing; qualified local help may be appropriate.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming a young animal has been abandoned. A parent may be nearby or away feeding; species-specific local advice matters.
- Handling a bat bare-handed. Keep your distance and use local public-health instructions if contact may have occurred.
- Chasing an animal toward an exit. For a flying bat with no known contact, the federal approach is passive room isolation and an open exterior exit, not pursuit.
- Releasing a bat after possible contact without consulting public health. The animal may need to remain available for testing under local instructions.
- Sealing a suspected bat entry point immediately. Animals may still be inside, and exclusion can be regulated.
- Applying a rule from another region as if it were universal. Agency guidance, wildlife laws, and appropriate responders vary by jurisdiction.
Which guidance applies where you live?
The specific procedures in this article come from California Department of Fish and Wildlife, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, and the Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association. They are useful starting points, not worldwide rules. Local agencies determine which responders are authorized, whether handling or exclusion is allowed, and what to do after possible human or pet contact.
California Department of Fish and Wildlife notes that California has more than 25 native bat species; that state-specific figure underscores why identification and local instructions matter, but it is not a count for other regions. The California wildlife guidance page does not state a publication year. The humane-society handbook is older general material, so its baby-mammal flowchart is best treated as a triage aid rather than a current, universal protocol.
