Stay quiet and well back. Keep people and pets away, turn off lights, and do not touch or approach the turtle, her tracks, or the nest. Contact the wildlife authority responsible for that beach and follow its instructions. Leave the turtle an open route back to the water.
What should I do if I see a sea turtle laying eggs?
- Stop and give her space. Do not move closer for a better look or photo. People or pets nearby can disturb a nesting turtle and cause her to abandon the attempt.
- Quietly clear the area. Ask other people to move back and keep pets away. Do not form a crowd or block the turtle’s route to or from the sea.
- Turn off lights and keep noise down. Switch off phone lights, flashlights, and camera flash. Artificial light and noise can disturb nesting turtles; light can also disorient hatchlings.
- Call the local wildlife or sea turtle authority. Tell the responder the beach name or precise location and what you observed. If you do not know which agency serves that beach, check the relevant local government or wildlife authority rather than guessing a number.
- Leave the turtle, nest, and tracks alone. Do not touch the turtle, dig, cover the nest, erase tracks, or try to mark the nest by approaching it. Stay only if you can do so quietly without obstructing the turtle or drawing a crowd, and follow the agency’s instructions.
How far away should you stay?
There is no single distance that applies on every beach. Local recommendations differ: a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service notice for the Texas coast says to stay 100 feet away, while a separate notice for Hawaiʻi advises at least 10 feet. These are place-specific recommendations, not interchangeable global rules. Follow the local authority’s direction; if you do not know it, stay farther away and keep the turtle’s path clear. - Israel: The Israel Nature and Parks Authority lists *3639. Its guidance is to watch from a distance, keep people away, reduce noise and artificial light, avoid flash, and leave the nest and tracks undisturbed while documenting the location for a ranger. - Florida: The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission lists Wildlife Alert at 888-404-FWCC (3922) for reports of people disturbing a turtle or nest and for injured, dead, or harassed turtles. Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission guidance
What if the turtle is injured, stranded, or entangled?
Contact trained responders rather than trying to treat, move, or rescue the turtle yourself. NOAA Fisheries advises contacting trained responders for turtles in distress. Keep people back, avoid handling the animal, and follow the instructions of the authority serving that beach. NOAA Fisheries: Loggerhead Turtle

Why it matters to keep the beach quiet and dark
A nesting turtle needs room to complete the attempt and return to the sea without interference. Disturbance can cause a turtle to abandon nesting, and artificial lights can affect both nesting turtles and hatchlings. NOAA Fisheries recommends avoiding interaction and disturbance and keeping beaches dark. NOAA Fisheries: Loggerhead Turtle · NOAA Fisheries: What Can You Do to Help Sea Turtles?
