If a hatchling is steadily crawling toward the ocean, do not touch it. Stand back, keep people and pets away, turn off lights, and let it continue unaided. If it is moving away from the water, trapped, injured, in a road or pool, tangled in debris, or otherwise unsafe, contact the local wildlife authority or sea-turtle stranding network immediately. Do not carry it, feed it, put it in water, or return a suspected washback to the sea unless trained responders specifically instruct you.
Make the right decision in the first minute
Use the hatchling’s direction and circumstances—not its size or the fact that it is alone—to decide what to do. A normal emergence is an animal crawling over the beach toward the surf. A hatchling that has stopped, is heading inland, is entangled, or is in a human-made danger needs professional advice.

Rules and telephone numbers vary by jurisdiction. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) gives Florida observers a 24-hour Wildlife Alert Hotline at 888-404-FWCC (3922). That is not a national number. In the United States, NOAA Fisheries directs the public to the appropriate regional sea-turtle stranding coordinator; in other countries, use the local wildlife or marine-conservation authority.

Leave it alone. FWC’s September 25, 2026 guidance says that sea turtles and hatchlings actively crawling toward the ocean do not need assistance. The hatchling is using the beach’s slope and the natural glow of the night sky reflected on the water to orient itself. Your role is to prevent disturbance, not to improve its route.

- Move yourself well away from the animal and keep the corridor between it and the surf open.
- Ask other beachgoers to stand back without gathering around it.
- Keep dogs leashed and prevent any pet from approaching.
- Switch off flashlights, phone lights, headlamps, flash photography, and video lamps. If you need to call, shield the phone screen and stay away from the crawl path.
- Do not follow directly behind it, redirect it, or carry it closer to the water.
A hatchling can pause briefly, change direction around a natural obstacle, or appear vulnerable while still following a normal process. Small size, solitude, or slow movement alone does not prove that it needs rescue.
When a call is necessary
Contact professionals promptly when the animal is not making a normal, unobstructed journey. Report the situation even if you are unsure whether it is a washback or a newly emerged hatchling. A trained coordinator can decide whether an intervention is legal and biologically appropriate.
Common reasons to report
- The hatchling is traveling inland or repeatedly away from the sea.
- It is on a road, parking lot, sidewalk, in a yard, or inside a swimming pool.
- Seaweed, fishing line, plastic, fencing, or another object is restraining it.
- It is motionless for an unusual period, visibly injured, weak, or being attacked by animals.
- Storms, high winds, or waves may have carried a post-hatchling back onto the beach.
How to report without approaching
Give the dispatcher a precise location that a responder can reach: beach name, access point, nearby landmark, and whether the animal is on the sand, a road, or private property. Describe its direction of travel and the hazard. From a safe distance, note whether it is alive, its approximate size, and any visible spray markings. Those details are specifically requested in Florida reporting guidance, but they are useful information for responders elsewhere as well.

After calling, keep the animal in sight from a safe distance if you can do so without crowding it. If you must leave for safety, tell the coordinator exactly when and where you last saw it.
Understand the washback distinction
A washback is a post-hatchling that has been carried back toward shore, often with floating seaweed after high winds, large waves, or storms. It may look like a newly emerged hatchling, but it can require specialized care. FWC’s current advice is not to pick up a suspected washback and not to put it back into the ocean; call the Wildlife Alert Hotline for instructions in Florida.
Do not diagnose a washback solely because the turtle is tiny, alone, or near the high-tide line. Report the circumstances—especially recent severe weather, attached seaweed, or evidence that it came from the water—and let the stranding network determine the response.

Why light and crowds can cause harm
Artificial light can draw a hatchling away from the sea. Flashlights, camera flashes, phone screens held close to the sand, and bright video panels can all add confusing visual cues to a naturally dark beach. Approaching also creates shadows, movement, and foot traffic that may block the route or cause the animal to waste energy.

What not to do
- Do not pick up a normal crawler. Carrying it changes its route and removes the natural crawl that is part of its emergence.
- Do not put a suspected washback in the ocean. Its condition, species, and needs require a trained assessment.
- Do not place the animal in a bucket, cooler, bathtub, or other container unless a responder explicitly directs you.
- Do not put it in water, feed it, apply medication, or attempt to remove entanglement. Improvised treatment can worsen injuries and may violate local wildlife law.
- Do not allow pets or children to touch it. Keep everyone behind a clear boundary.
- Do not post a live location to attract a crowd before contacting authorities. More visitors can increase light, trampling, and handling pressure.
NOAA’s instruction not to place hatchlings in water appears in an oil-spill beach-cleanup protocol written for trained crews. It should not be treated as a universal public rescue procedure; the appropriate public action is to contact the local stranding authority and follow its directions.

Special situations
On a road or parking lot
Do not step into traffic or chase the turtle. Move yourself to a safe position, warn drivers only when you can do so safely, and call the wildlife authority with the road name, direction of travel, and nearest access point. Do not carry it across the road unless an authorized responder tells you exactly how.
In a yard, pool, or building
Keep people and pets out of the area, prevent additional lights, and call immediately. Close gates only if doing so does not require approaching the turtle or blocking a responder. A pool or other artificial setting is an emergency location because the animal cannot follow its normal route.
Tangled in seaweed or debris
Observe where the line, plastic, netting, or vegetation is attached and describe it to the dispatcher. Do not pull, cut, drag, or lift the turtle. A responder may need specialized equipment and a controlled release site.
Sick, injured, or dead
Report the condition and exact location. From a distance, note approximate size, visible wounds, whether it is alive, and any spray markings. Keep people and animals away until the authority provides instructions.
Jurisdiction, law, and responder instructions
Wildlife rules are local. FWC states that in Florida it is illegal to harm or disturb nesting sea turtles, their nests and eggs, or to pick up hatchlings. Other states and countries have their own protected-species laws, reporting channels, and authorized-handler rules. A number that works in Florida may not reach help elsewhere.
NOAA’s general stranding advice is to call the local network, maintain a safe distance, provide an accurate location, and wait for a trained responder when possible. Once you have made the report, do exactly what the coordinator says—even if that differs from advice you have heard for another beach or species.

A practical encounter checklist
- Stop and identify the direction of travel without touching the turtle.
- If it is moving normally toward the ocean, back away and remove people, pets, and lights from its route.
- If it is stranded, misdirected, injured, or in danger, call the local wildlife authority or stranding coordinator.
- Give the beach name, nearest access point, precise position, condition, direction, and hazards.
- Keep the animal in sight from a safe distance if feasible, and keep everyone else away.
- Do not handle, feed, water, transport, or treat it unless trained responders give explicit instructions.
The safest help is often restraint: protect the dark, open path for a normal crawler and reserve hands-on intervention for authorized professionals.
