What to Do If You Find a Possible Fossil: How to Record and Report It

If you think you have found a fossil, photograph it where it lies, record its location, leave it undisturbed, and report it to the authority responsible for that land. Do not pick it up, pry it loose, or clean it while you seek advice. The right reporting contact—and the rules on collecting—depend on where you are.

What to do first

  1. Leave the object in place. Do not remove, move, pry, or clean it. If you can do so without trespassing or harming the site, discourage others from disturbing it. The National Park Service (NPS) tells visitors who find fossils in a U.S. national park to leave them where found and tell a ranger: NPS: About Fossils.
  2. Photograph it in place. Take a close image and wider images showing the surrounding ground or rock. If practical, photograph it from more than one angle. Put a familiar object nearby for scale, such as a hand or water bottle; a ruler is not required. The NPS Badlands Fossil Lab FAQ suggests a dollar bill, water bottle, or hand as examples: Badlands National Park: Fossil Lab FAQ.
  3. Record where and when you found it. Note the date and the location as accurately as you can. A map or phone pin can help; GPS coordinates are useful where available. Badlands NPS advises using a trail map or phone to mark the location and cautions against building cairns, drawing on formations, or otherwise marking the site in person.
  4. Contact the responsible authority. Tell the land manager or local paleontology authority what you found, where it is, and that you have photos. Follow their directions and ask before anyone moves or collects it.

For U.S. national parks, NPS puts the steps plainly: “If you discover a fossil in a national park, take a photograph of it, mark its spot on a map or record its position with a GPS or smartphone, leave it where you found it, and tell a ranger.” The original position and surrounding context can matter: NPS describes fossils and fossil sites as nonrenewable, and British Columbia’s reporting form asks for a photograph of the fossil where it was found.

Who should you report a possible fossil to?

Use a contact responsible for the place where the object lies. These are jurisdiction-specific examples, not a universal legal rule or worldwide contact directory.

Where you found it Who to contact What to keep in mind
A U.S. national park Tell a park ranger. NPS instructions apply to national parks; do not assume the same collecting rule applies to every U.S. property.
Utah Contact the Utah Geological Survey’s State Paleontologist or paleontology staff, as appropriate. UGS recommends reporting finds and checking land status because requirements differ by land category.
British Columbia Report the discovery to the BC Fossil Management Office, Royal BC Museum, or a local museum. The province’s reporting guidance emphasizes documenting where the fossil was found and photographing it in place.
Elsewhere Ask the land manager, local or regional geological survey, or a museum. Rules and responsible offices vary; confirm them for the exact location.

For British Columbia’s reporting information and form, see the BC Fossil Management page.

Can you keep or collect it?

Do not assume you may keep, sell, donate, or collect a possible fossil. The rules depend on the jurisdiction, land category, landowner, and managing agency. Ask before collecting or moving the object.

U.S. national parks

NPS says recreational, commercial, and educational fossil collecting is prohibited in national parks. Scientific collection requires a park-approved permit. These rules concern national parks; they should not be generalized to all land in the United States. See NPS: About Fossils.

Utah

Utah Geological Survey guidance distinguishes among Bureau of Land Management land, Forest Service land, state trust lands, and private land. It says permission is required to collect on private land and recommends checking land status and applicable requirements with the relevant agency or landowner. What information makes a report useful?

  • Location: the clearest map pin, coordinates, trail or nearby landmark you can provide without altering the site.
  • Photos: a close view, wider context, and additional angles if possible; include an ordinary size reference if one is handy.
  • Timing: the date you found it.
  • Context: describe what you noticed and where the object was situated, without moving it to get a better view.

In Badlands National Park, NPS says GPS coordinates are helpful and suggests marking the spot on a trail map or phone. Its guidance also says not to make a physical marker such as a cairn or a drawing on a formation. British Columbia likewise asks people to photograph fossils where they were found.

What if you are not sure it is a fossil?

Report it as a possible fossil rather than trying to confirm it by scraping, washing, or removing it. A land manager, geological survey, or museum can advise whether the find needs further attention and what to do next. Your job at the discovery site is to preserve its position and provide a clear location and photographs.
