Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteKeep people and pets away, and do not touch, move, collect, or eat the fish. From a safe and lawful distance, take a photograph, note the exact location and time, and report the sighting to your local fisheries, wildlife, environmental, or coastal authority. Use a fish-kill or unusual-fish reporting channel when one exists. There is no single worldwide hotline, and appearance alone cannot establish why the fish came ashore.
What to do in the first few minutes
- Create distance. Move children, dogs, and other people away from the fish. Stay out of the water around it, especially if there is an unusual smell, sheen, discoloration, foam, or other sign of a possible water-quality problem.
- Do not handle it. Do not touch, roll over, drag, cut open, collect, or attempt to preserve the fish. Do not try to push it back into the sea. A fish that looks dead may still move suddenly, and a sick or contaminated animal can expose people or pets to hazards that cannot be identified by sight.
- Observe without approaching. Decide only what can be seen from your current position: whether it appears alive, dead, or unable to move normally; its approximate length; how many fish are present; and any obvious markings.
- Photograph only if safe. Use a phone camera from a distance. Do not cross barriers, climb onto unstable rocks, wade into surf, or disturb the fish to obtain a better image.
- Leave the site undisturbed. Once you have recorded the essentials, leave and make the report. Trained and authorized responders should decide whether examination, sampling, or removal is appropriate.
Why touching or eating the fish is a bad idea
Illness, toxins, and contamination are not visible reliably
Marine-life distress guidance from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) warns that animals on shore may be sick, injured, disoriented, starving, exposed to pollution or natural toxins, entangled, struck, or affected by disease or parasites. A fish may also have been in contact with contaminated water or a harmful substance that is not obvious in a photograph. Treat an unexplained carcass as an observation to report, not as food or a souvenir.

Pets can turn a safe observation into an exposure
Dogs may bite or carry pieces of a carcass away before an owner can stop them. Keep pets leashed and well clear, and do not let them lick the fish, the surrounding sand, or pooled water. If a person or animal has already touched or eaten part of it, contact the appropriate medical or veterinary service and tell them what happened, where, and when; do not wait for an explanation of the fish’s cause of death.
Moving the fish can destroy useful evidence
Dragging a fish above the tide line, returning it to the water, or taking it home changes its position and condition. Investigators may need the original location, nearby water, and other animals as context. Leave the scene as you found it unless an authorized responder gives different instructions.

Record the details an authority can use
Write down the following while you are still at a safe distance. If a detail cannot be obtained without approaching, leave it out rather than taking a risk.
- Exact location: Name the beach and access point, the nearest landmark, or coordinates from your phone. Include the side of a river mouth, harbor, or other feature if relevant.
- Date and time: Record when you first saw the fish, not only when you submitted the report.
- Apparent condition: Say whether it appears alive, dead, or unable to move normally. Do not poke it to test its condition.
- Approximate size and count: Estimate length and state whether you saw one fish or several. If there are many, describe the area they occupy rather than trying to count them from close range.
- Visible features: Note unusual body shape, coloration, fins, markings, wounds, swelling, or a likely species only when the identification is reasonably clear. Use “unidentified” instead of guessing.
- Photograph or short video: Include a wider view showing the setting and a closer view only from a position that remains safe and lawful.
- Nearby observations: Note other dead or distressed animals, unusual water color, an oily sheen, foam, strong odor, or a nearby discharge. Describe what you observed without claiming it caused the event.
- Your contact details: Provide a phone number or email if the reporting form requests it, so officials can clarify the location or ask follow-up questions.
Who to contact when there is no universal hotline
Reporting arrangements depend on your country, state, province, coastal region, and the species involved. Start with the official website of the local or regional fisheries, wildlife, environmental, or coastal authority. Search that site for phrases such as “report unusual fish,” “fish kill,” “diseased fish,” “marine wildlife report,” or “stranded animal.” Use the channel that matches the animal and the event rather than assuming a marine-mammal hotline also handles fish.

| Reporting route | When it fits | What the published guidance shows |
|---|---|---|
| Local or regional fisheries or wildlife authority | A single unusual fish, a dead or diseased fish, or a suspected fish kill | These agencies commonly request location, number, species if identifiable, condition, photographs, and reporter contact details. |
| Environmental or coastal water-quality authority | Fish plus an unusual sheen, odor, discoloration, discharge, or other suspected environmental event | Environmental observations can help investigators distinguish disease, toxins, and other conditions. |
| Fish-kill or unusual-fish online form or hotline | Multiple dead fish, recurring mortality, or a local authority’s designated fish-reporting process | Some jurisdictions accept online submissions; hours, urgency rules, and required fields vary. |
| Marine-animal stranding network | Marine mammals or turtles, or another animal category specifically covered by that network | NOAA and UK guidance list separate contacts and instructions for marine mammals, turtles, and other large marine animals. Those routes should not be presented as a universal fish contact. |
NOAA’s report directory illustrates this jurisdiction-and-species approach: it lists fish-specific contacts in some cases, including a giant manta ray contact, while providing separate regional channels for marine mammals and turtles. The directory is not a worldwide fish-stranding hotline.

One large or unusual fish
Submit an unusual-fish or fisheries report if your authority offers one. Explain that you observed a single specimen, give its size and location, and attach a safe-distance image. A single fish may still matter if it is a rare species, has abnormalities, or is part of a wider event that has not yet been noticed.

Several dead or distressed fish
Use the local fish-kill, disease, or aquatic-animal mortality channel. State the approximate number, the stretch of shoreline affected, whether species appear mixed, and whether other animals are involved. Florida’s Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, for example, accepts reports of fish kills, diseased fish, and fish with abnormalities through a form or hotline and asks for location, number, species if identifiable, and contact information. The commission says these reports help it understand causes, patterns, and occurrence and coordinate with partner agencies.
Fish together with other wildlife
Report the fish to the fish or environmental authority and use a separate wildlife-stranding route if mammals, turtles, or birds are also affected. A network that is set up for one animal group may not dispatch for another, so describe every affected animal when you make the first call or submission.

If the fish appears to be alive
Do not assume that returning it to the water is a rescue. A stranded fish may be injured, disoriented, diseased, or affected by water conditions that remain dangerous. Do not lift it, touch its gills, pour water over it, or attempt to keep it in a container. Keep people and pets back, photograph from a safe distance, and tell the authority that it appears alive or is moving abnormally. NOAA’s general guidance is that only trained and authorized responders should assist distressed wildlife.
Do not diagnose the cause from appearance alone
Dead fish can be associated with disease, parasites, toxins, harmful algal blooms, low oxygen, temperature changes, injuries, or other environmental conditions. A photograph cannot normally distinguish among those possibilities.
Best Value
A notice issued by South Africa’s Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment on August 2, 2026, demonstrates why restraint matters. Dead and dying sardines were reported at several Western Cape locations. The department said a harmful algal bloom was present in part of the area, but it did not assume that the bloom caused every reported death. Its warning stated: “No cause has yet been confirmed, and conclusions should not be drawn before the samples and available environmental information have been assessed.” The public was advised not to collect, handle, or consume the sardines.
Australia’s Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry describes fish-kill investigation as an early-warning measure for emerging aquatic disease. Its protocol treats disease and environmental causes as possibilities to be distinguished through investigation, not conclusions to be made from the shoreline.
What may happen after you report
An authority may ask for a clearer location, additional photographs, the approximate number of fish, or information about weather and water conditions. It may combine your report with others, decide whether a field visit or sampling is warranted, and coordinate with environmental or public-health agencies. Follow-up is not guaranteed for every individual fish, particularly when access is difficult, but precise observations improve the value of the initial report.
Recommended Free Tools
Florida’s wildlife commission says about 2,000 people submit fish-kill and disease reports each year. That figure is specific to Florida’s reporting program and is not a global estimate; it illustrates how public observations can contribute to monitoring patterns over time.
Quick Recap
Mistakes to avoid
- Do not pick up a “trophy.” Collection can expose you to hazards and interfere with examination.
- Do not post a diagnosis as fact. A strange color or smell does not prove pollution, poisoning, or disease.
- Do not use an emergency number automatically. Follow your local authority’s instructions unless someone is in immediate danger or a hazardous release is occurring.
- Do not provide a vague location. “Near the beach” is less useful than a named access point, landmark, or coordinate.
- Do not force an identification. A wrong species name can send a report to the wrong specialist; “unidentified fish” is acceptable.
- Do not approach for a better photograph. A distant image is preferable to an injury, exposure, or disturbed scene.
