Leave it where it is. Photograph the object in place from several angles, record where you found it, and tell the land manager or park ranger. You can also contact a local natural history museum or geological survey for help assessing it. Do not dig, clean, break, or carry it away while you are uncertain what it is or what the rules allow.

What to do first

  1. Leave the object and its setting undisturbed. Do not excavate, pry it loose, clean it, or try to stabilize it. A fossil’s position and surrounding material can provide scientific context. The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County advises suspected finders to leave fossils where they are found.
  2. Document it in place. Take a wide photograph showing the surroundings and close-ups from more than one angle. Put an ordinary object beside it for scale if you can do so without touching or moving the find. Record the date, location, nearby landmarks, visible size, color and texture, and how much of the object is exposed. Note GPS coordinates or mark the spot on a map; Badlands National Park recommends photographs from multiple angles, a scale object, and location notes.
  3. Report it to the right people. In a national park, tell a ranger. Elsewhere, contact the agency or organization that manages the land. A local geological survey or natural history museum may also help with identification or documentation. Utah Geological Survey, for example, encourages reporting finds to its State Paleontologist or paleontology staff.
  4. Check the land rules before touching or collecting anything. Note the state or country and, if you know it, the specific land manager. Rules vary with jurisdiction, land ownership, and fossil type. A possible mastodon tooth could be a vertebrate fossil, so do not assume ordinary rock-collecting rules apply.
  5. Follow the responsible authority’s directions. If erosion, construction, or another immediate threat could damage the find, promptly tell the land manager what is happening. Do not move it on your own; explain the risk and ask what to do.

How to describe a possible mastodon tooth

Use tentative wording such as “possible mastodon tooth” until a qualified expert confirms the identification. A tooth-like shape or a photograph alone cannot establish that an object is a fossil, much less that it came from a mastodon. The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County notes that inorganic pseudofossils can resemble bones or other remains, and that some bones found underground have not fossilized.

Send clear photographs and locality information to a paleontologist, museum, geological survey, or land manager. Identification and permission to collect are separate matters: an expert may assess what the object is, while the land manager determines what is permitted at that site.

Who to contact—and why

Contact What they can help with
Park ranger or land manager Site protection, reporting procedures, and the rules for that land.
Natural history museum or geological survey Possible identification, scientific documentation, and appropriate reporting contacts.

These roles complement each other. A local institution may handle both, but confirm that it is responsible for the site and the type of find.

Why the rules depend on where you found it

There is no single collection rule that applies to every fossil find. The Utah Geological Survey says vertebrate fossils may not be collected on federal or state lands in Utah and that collecting on private land there requires the landowner’s permission. Florida law provides a different example: it requires permits for specified field investigations of vertebrate fossils on state-owned or leased land and designated sites. These are jurisdiction-specific examples, not rules to apply elsewhere.

The National Park Service says the Paleontological Resources Preservation Act was enacted in 2009 and provides direction for protecting fossils on public lands. That federal framework does not settle every question involving state, tribal, local, or private land, or every site-specific restriction. Check with the actual land manager before acting. In a national park, report the find to a ranger and follow National Park Service direction.

A recent example—and what it does not prove

An Associated Press report in 2026 described a Pacific mastodon tooth about 9 inches (23 centimeters) long found during habitat restoration at a San Mateo County preserve. The report described involvement by the preserve manager and collection specialists, and said the tooth was donated to Stanford University’s Doerr School of Sustainability. That account illustrates the importance of context and expert follow-up; it does not establish a standard procedure or a right to collect other finds. The reported tooth’s size is a case detail, not a test for identifying a mastodon tooth.
