Go directly to the real service using its known address or a trusted bookmark, change the password, and sign out other sessions. Then change any reused copies and check for unfamiliar sign-ins, recovery changes, or app permissions. If you also shared a one-time code, approved a sign-in, or granted an app access, take the additional steps below.
Secure the real account first
- Open the legitimate service independently. Type its known official address yourself or use a trusted bookmark. Do not follow the suspicious link again, even if it still looks convincing.
- Change the exposed password. Use the real provider’s account-security or password-reset flow and choose a new, unique password. OpenAI advises changing a password right away if it may have been exposed: How to secure your OpenAI account if you suspect unauthorized access.
- End other sessions and inspect account activity. In the legitimate service’s security settings, sign out of active sessions, review recent security events and devices, and check whether recovery details or other security settings have changed. For ChatGPT specifically, OpenAI says changing the password logs out current sessions within 30 minutes; that timing is not a general rule for other services. See OpenAI’s account-security guidance.
If you cannot sign in or find activity you did not authorize, contact the provider through support reached from its real website. For a work or school account, notify your IT or security team promptly.

Change every reused password
If you used the same password anywhere else, change it on every account where it appears. Start with your email account and any Google or Microsoft account used to sign in to other services or recover their passwords. A compromised email or identity-provider account can help someone reach other accounts, even after you secure the AI service.

Check what else you shared or approved
If you entered only your password
Reset it, revoke other sessions, and review recent account activity and recovery settings. Entering a password alone does not prove that someone accessed the account, but the password should no longer be trusted.
If you shared a one-time code or approved a sign-in
Treat this as a possible active account takeover. Deny any sign-in prompt you did not initiate. From the real provider’s site, reset the password, revoke sessions, inspect recovery settings, and contact support if you see unauthorized access or cannot regain control. Fake login pages can collect passwords and MFA codes; MFA methods also differ in how well they resist phishing. See CISA’s MFA guidance.

If you granted an app or consent prompt access
Review connected apps and third-party access in the legitimate identity provider’s settings, and revoke grants you do not recognize. A password change may not remove access granted through a token. In a September 2026 advisory, the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center described consent phishing in which a token can preserve access after a password change: IC3 advisory on consent phishing.

If you pasted an API key
An API key is separate from your account password. If you exposed one, delete or revoke that key, review API usage for activity you do not recognize, and contact the provider if needed. OpenAI includes those steps in its account-security guidance.
If you downloaded or ran a file
That creates a separate possibility of device compromise. A password entered on a webpage alone does not establish that your device is infected. If you downloaded or executed a file, treat that as a separate security incident and seek guidance appropriate to your device and organization.

Strengthen sign-in after containment
Once you have reset the password and revoked sessions, turn on multifactor authentication (MFA) if the provider offers it. Prefer a passkey or FIDO/WebAuthn security key when supported and practical. CISA identifies FIDO/WebAuthn as phishing-resistant and says the protocol blocks fake-site login attempts; not every MFA method provides the same protection: CISA: More than a Password.

OpenAI specifically notes that enabling MFA does not cancel current logins in its account-security guidance. Available methods and recovery options depend on the provider.
