If you entered the wrong own-ship MMSI in your VHF radio, stop using the number for DSC or AIS identity and contact the radio manufacturer for the reset procedure for your exact make and model. Do not assume an ordinary setup menu, guessed code, or universal cable can change it. First verify the correct registered MMSI with the organization that issued it, then ask the manufacturer whether the radio can be reset aboard the vessel or must go to an authorized service center.
What do I do if I entered the wrong MMSI in my VHF radio?
An MMSI (Maritime Mobile Service Identity) is the vessel identity a digital selective calling (DSC) radio uses in digital calls, including distress alerts. A wrong number can transmit incorrect identity information to other stations and to search-and-rescue authorities. The USCG Navigation Center says owners must contact the manufacturer about the MMSI reset process because international agreements restrict changing a stored own-ship identity without manufacturer cooperation.

- Stop trying random menu combinations. Do not enter a guessed number, invent a replacement, or send a test distress alert.
- Identify the equipment. Write down the manufacturer, exact model designation, and serial number. If an external AIS transceiver also stores an MMSI, record its details separately.
- Confirm the intended number. Check the vessel registration account, certificate, or licensing record from the organization that issued the MMSI. Never rely on memory or a number copied from another vessel.
- Contact official support. Tell the manufacturer that the own-ship MMSI was entered incorrectly and ask for the model-specific reset or reprogramming process. Ask whether an authorized marine-radio service center can perform it locally.
- Follow the service instructions. The process may be completed without removing the radio, or it may require removal, shipment, or an authorized service visit. The manufacturer decides which method applies.
- Verify the result. After reprogramming, display the radio’s stored own-ship MMSI and compare every digit with the registration record before relying on DSC.
The USCG’s wording is direct: “You must contact the manufacturer about the MMSI reset process.” That advice applies to the stored own-ship identity, not to changing a caller’s number in a contact list or editing a group-call entry.
Can I change the MMSI number in my radio?
Usually, not through the normal user settings. Manufacturers limit changes to prevent accidental or unauthorized alteration of a safety identity. The USCG explains that international agreements specify that, once stored, an MMSI should be changeable only by an authorized user with cooperation from the manufacturer.

How that cooperation works differs by model. Some radios expose a manufacturer-authorized reset path that a service technician can use; others require the unit to be returned. A procedure that works on one brand, model family, or firmware version should not be applied to another radio.
What the Garmin example shows
Garmin’s published support wording is model-family specific: if an MMSI was entered incorrectly or changed, reprogramming must be completed by an authorized service center or by returning the device to Garmin. This is a concrete example of why you should ask for instructions for your exact unit rather than treating an internet key sequence as universal. It does not establish that every manufacturer requires a return, nor that every radio can be reset aboard the vessel.
Why a registration change is not enough
Changing the MMSI in a registration account updates the authority’s record; it does not automatically rewrite the number stored in a VHF radio. The radio’s nonvolatile memory must be reset or reprogrammed through the manufacturer-approved process. The same principle applies to AIS equipment: vessel details and identity are programmed in the equipment, so equipment used on another boat must be reprogrammed for that vessel.
Do I have to send my VHF radio back to the manufacturer?
Not necessarily. The answer depends on the manufacturer, model, software, and service rules. Ask support these questions before disconnecting anything:

- Can an authorized technician reset the own-ship MMSI while the radio remains installed?
- If removal is required, may a local authorized marine-electronics center perform it?
- Does the unit need to be shipped to the manufacturer, or is an in-person service visit sufficient?
- Will the reset erase other settings, such as channel labels, scan lists, GPS configuration, or user contacts?
- After the reset, can the owner enter the verified MMSI, or must the service provider do the final programming?
- What serial number, proof of ownership, registration document, or license information is required?
There is no universal fee, turnaround time, or documentation requirement established for all radios. Get those details from the manufacturer or its authorized service channel for your country and model. Do not buy a replacement radio simply because the number is wrong; an existing unit may be correctable.
What information should I have ready for support?
A complete first request reduces back-and-forth and helps support identify the correct procedure. Prepare:
- Manufacturer and exact model name or number.
- Serial number and, if shown, firmware version.
- The MMSI currently stored in the radio, if you can view it safely.
- The correct MMSI as shown on the vessel’s registration or licensing record.
- Vessel name, flag or country of registration, and whether the radio is installed or portable.
- Whether the radio is connected to an AIS transceiver, chartplotter, or other networked equipment.
- Your location and whether the vessel is preparing for international travel.
Describe the issue precisely: “The own-ship MMSI was entered incorrectly and has not been intentionally changed,” or explain if the vessel or registration has changed. Do not describe a number as wrong merely because it differs from a previous owner if the authority issued a new identity for the vessel.

DSC uses the stored own-ship MMSI when making individual, group, or distress calls. If the number is wrong, a receiving station may see an identity that does not match your vessel’s registration. In a distress situation, search-and-rescue authorities use MMSI registration information to identify and locate mariners. A mismatch can delay or complicate that identification, so correction and accurate registration details matter even if ordinary voice calling still works.

The radio can continue to receive routine traffic while you arrange correction, but do not treat that as proof that the identity is safe to use. Avoid nonessential DSC calls until the stored number has been verified. Keep a listening watch and use voice procedures appropriate to your jurisdiction and operating situation.
An MMSI stored in the VHF and an MMSI held by the issuing authority are related but distinct records. Updating one does not update the other. If a vessel carries separate VHF and AIS units, confirm that each unit is programmed for the same vessel identity where the applicable rules require that arrangement.
What if I pressed the distress button with the wrong MMSI?
This is a different, urgent situation from merely seeing a wrong number on the programming screen. If the radio actually transmitted a DSC distress alert, follow the radio’s cancellation procedure immediately. Use the cancellation menu or documented control sequence, and do not power the radio off before cancelling if the manufacturer’s instructions and USCG guidance require the set to remain on.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Cancel the transmitted alert using the radio’s distress-cancellation function.
- After cancellation, make the required voice announcement on VHF Channel 16, stating that the distress alert was sent accidentally and is cancelled. Follow the wording and details required by your maritime authority.
- Continue monitoring Channel 16 and respond to calls from vessels, rescue coordination centers, or the Coast Guard.
- Record the time, position, and equipment involved, and notify the relevant authority or licensing body if instructed.
If you only entered a number incorrectly in a setup screen and no distress alert was transmitted, the distress-alert cancellation procedure is not called for by the cited USCG guidance. Still arrange the manufacturer reset before using DSC.

US rules depend on the vessel, equipment, and travel plans. For many recreational vessels that remain in US waters and are not required to carry a marine radio, the USCG says approved organizations can issue an MMSI. With exceptions such as certain handheld radios, each radio on the vessel should use the same MMSI. The USCG emphasizes: “MMSI belongs with the vessel, not the user.”
That means you should not carry a personal MMSI from one boat to another unless the issuing authority specifically provides a number for that equipment and circumstance. When a vessel is sold, reflagged, or changes its licensing status, confirm with the issuing organization whether a new MMSI is required and then have the equipment reprogrammed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesInternational voyages from the United States
The USCG says owners planning to sail to a foreign country need an FCC ship-station license and must replace an existing own-ship MMSI with the FCC-issued one. The manufacturer should be contacted for instructions on deleting the existing identity and entering the authorized number. Do not assume that a domestic recreational MMSI remains valid once the vessel’s licensing or operating area changes.

What changes outside the United States?
MMSI allocation, licensing, and service requirements are jurisdiction-specific. The correct number depends on the vessel’s flag or state, the authority that issued its license, the equipment category, and where the vessel operates. A US procedure should not be presented as a universal rule for vessels registered elsewhere.
UK operators should consult the Maritime and Coastguard Agency’s small-boat GMDSS procedures and current licensing guidance. The agency page was updated on 24 July 2024 and advises maintaining a listening watch on Channel 16; its procedures apply to the UK context. Operators in other countries should contact their national maritime or radio-licensing authority, especially before an international voyage.
Procedural choices: onboard reset or service visit
| Situation | Likely next step | What is established |
|---|---|---|
| Manufacturer supports an authorized onboard reset | Follow the official procedure, then verify the displayed MMSI digit by digit. | Some units may be corrected without removal; availability is model-specific. |
| Manufacturer requires professional reprogramming | Use an authorized service center or the manufacturer’s return process. | Garmin explicitly describes this route for its affected VHF and AIS units; other brands may differ. |
| Registration record is wrong but radio is correct | Contact the issuing authority to correct the registration record. | Changing the record alone does not reprogram equipment. |
| Radio and AIS contain different identities | Stop relying on DSC or AIS identity until both manufacturers or an authorized technician confirm the correct programming. | Each device stores its own programmed identity. |
| Distress alert was transmitted accidentally | Cancel the alert without powering down first, then notify on Channel 16. | This is an emergency communications issue, separate from ordinary MMSI correction. |
Verification checklist after the reset
Do not consider the job complete when the service ticket closes. Perform a controlled verification without transmitting a distress alert:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open the radio’s information or DSC identity screen and read the full nine-digit own-ship MMSI.
- Compare it with the current registration or license document, including leading digits.
- Check any connected AIS unit for its independently stored MMSI and vessel details.
- Confirm that the vessel name, call sign, and other identifying information match the registration record where the equipment supports them.
- Save the service report, reset confirmation, and updated registration documents aboard the vessel.
- Ask support how a future sale, reflagging, or equipment transfer should be handled.
If one digit is still wrong, stop and contact the same service channel again. Do not attempt a second undocumented reset.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using a reset code found for another model: It may not work, may erase unrelated settings, or may leave the identity in an uncertain state.
- Assuming a new registration automatically updates the radio: Equipment memory must be reprogrammed separately.
- Entering a number copied from a handheld, old vessel, or owner: The appropriate identity depends on the vessel and licensing circumstances.
- Powering off after a transmitted distress alert: Follow the cancellation guidance first so other stations receive the cancellation.
- Promising yourself that service will be free or immediate: Fees, shipping, turnaround, and paperwork are not universal.
- Buying accessories as a substitute for support: A GPS accessory supplies position data; it does not correct an MMSI stored in the radio.
When should you escalate?
Ask for a supervisor or an authorized marine-electronics technician if support cannot identify the model, the radio displays a locked or blank MMSI field, the vessel’s registration changed, or the radio and AIS disagree. Escalate to the relevant maritime or radio authority if you cannot establish which organization issued the number, if the vessel is changing flag, or if an alert was transmitted and other stations may be responding.
Keep the radio available for safety communications while the correction is arranged, but clearly mark the identity problem in the vessel’s log and inform anyone standing watch. Once the correct MMSI is verified in every applicable unit and the registration record is current, normal DSC and AIS identity functions can be returned to service.
