Stop, give the snake plenty of space, and move away calmly. Keep children and pets back; don’t try to touch, catch, kill, or identify it up close. If someone is bitten, seek emergency medical care immediately.
What should you do when you encounter a snake?
- Stop and give it space. Don’t approach, provoke, touch, catch, or kill the snake. Slowly move away or walk around it at a safe distance, and keep children and pets back. The CDC notes that snakes bite when they feel threatened or trapped: CDC guidance on snakes.
- Don’t move closer to identify it. If you want to learn which snakes live in your area, consult a local official wildlife resource from a safe place. Appearance may help medical professionals after a bite, but never handle or approach a snake to get a better look.
- Let it leave on its own. Avoid blocking its route or trying to drive it away. If it is in an open area, give it room to move off.
If a snake is blocking a trail
Wait until the snake has crossed completely before continuing. Don’t step near or over it, and don’t try to hurry it along. The National Park Service gives this advice for Little River Canyon: NPS snake safety guidance. It is park-specific trail guidance, but the practical point is simple: wait rather than pass close to a snake.

If you find a snake in your yard or home
In the yard
Keep your distance, bring children and pets away, and leave the snake alone. If removal is needed, contact your local animal-control or wildlife authority for guidance; availability and rules vary by location. The CDC advises against removing or trapping a snake yourself.

- Get medical help promptly rather than attempting treatment at home.
How to reduce the chance of an encounter
- Stay on designated trails, and keep your hands and feet where you can see them.
- Keep pets leashed; don’t let them investigate logs, dense bushes, or places you cannot see into.
- Learn which venomous snakes occur locally using official wildlife resources, not by approaching a snake.
- Manage brush and log piles around the home and reduce rodent attractants.
- For outdoor activities, carry a first-aid kit as general preparedness. It is not snakebite treatment and does not replace emergency medical care.
This guidance is U.S.-oriented. Emergency numbers, wildlife rules, and animal-control services vary, so use local official guidance for contacts and next steps.
