What to Do if You Encounter a Shark While Diving in Arctic Waters

Stay calm, keep the shark in sight, remain with your group, and follow the dive leader’s pre-agreed plan. Do not touch, chase, block, feed, or otherwise attract the animal. In Arctic water, cold, low visibility, and a difficult exit can matter as much as the shark itself, so the most important safety work happens during the briefing before you enter.

What to do during the encounter

A shark sighting is not automatically an emergency. Your response should preserve awareness, keep the team together, and avoid provoking the animal. Use this sequence unless the local dive briefing gives a different, site-specific instruction.

  1. Pause and control your breathing. SHARKPROJECT’s diver guidance advises staying calm and avoiding hectic movement. A slow pause gives you time to check your gas, orientation, buddy position, and the shark’s direction without turning a surprising sighting into a rushed ascent.
  2. Keep the shark in view. Maintain three-dimensional awareness rather than staring only at the animal. Watch its position while also checking the surface or bottom, ice or rock, tether lines, and your fellow divers. Do not swim backward blindly.
  3. Stay close to the group. Signal your buddy and the dive leader using the signals agreed during the briefing. Do not split off to obtain a closer look or a better photograph. The leader may have information about a second diver, a channel, or the planned exit that you do not.
  4. Do not approach or interfere. Never deliberately touch, grab, chase, corner, block, feed, or attract the shark. Avoid sudden pursuit or attempts to steer it. If it changes direction, give it room and keep your own movements controlled.
  5. Follow the agreed termination plan. Whether the team ends the dive, moves to a planned exit point, or continues at a distance depends on the site briefing, current conditions, gas plan, and the leader’s judgment. There is no single ascent or escape maneuver that fits every Arctic location.
  6. Keep photography secondary. Put the camera away if using it reduces your awareness, separates you from the group, or delays the planned exit. A photograph is never a reason to approach or block a wild animal.

If the shark comes closer

Continue facing the animal without swimming toward it, keep your buddy and leader in view, and use the signals established before entry. Do not attempt to touch it or create a dramatic reaction. The leader’s instructions and the local emergency plan take priority over generic advice because visibility, ice, current, depth, and access to the surface differ widely between sites.

If you lose sight of it

Do not chase after it or make a rapid, uncontrolled ascent. Re-establish contact with your buddy and leader, check your position, and apply the lost-buddy and separation procedures covered in the briefing. If the team is ending the dive, use the specified route and ascent protocol rather than inventing one underwater.

Why non-interference matters

The safest behavior for both diver and shark is to leave the animal alone. A 2025 assessment by Canada’s Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC) describes earlier diver harassment at a Quebec congregation site: divers grabbed tail fins and blocked sharks’ paths. The assessment says this disturbed natural movement and behavior and could impose stress and energy costs during essential activities. The Quebec incident is not an Arctic dive site, but the welfare lesson applies directly: observation must not become pursuit or handling.

Do not use food, lights, noise, or deliberate approach to create an encounter. Even when an animal appears slow or indifferent, its behavior can change if it is crowded or prevented from moving away. A group that maintains distance and a clear exit route is easier for the leader to manage than a cluster of divers trying to surround a shark.

What is known about Greenland sharks

Greenland sharks are the central shark example for Greenland-focused Arctic diving, although “Arctic waters” covers a much larger area with different species and rules. The Norwegian Institute of Marine Research states that Greenland sharks can reach 7 metres in length. Its species page, updated 25 August 2026, says: “There are no known harmful interactions with humans, including from divers who have observed these animals under water.” The word known is important: the statement is not a guarantee that every encounter is risk-free, nor does it provide a numerical probability for divers.

Species identification should come from the local operator or marine specialist, not from a diver trying to classify a distant silhouette in cold, dim water. Ask which sharks are plausible at the site and what behavior the team should report. The response remains the same basic discipline—calm observation, group cohesion, and no interference—while the site leader accounts for local ecology and conditions.

Brief the dive before entering the water

A shark plan is part of the ordinary dive plan, not a substitute for it. Ask the operator to explain the following points in plain language and confirm how they will be signaled underwater.

Planning question What you need to establish
Which species might be present? Likely local sharks, expected size or behavior, and what sightings should be reported to the leader.
What conditions are expected? Visibility, current, depth, temperature, ice or overhead hazards, entry and exit points, and whether conditions can change during the dive.
What ends the dive? Specific termination criteria such as falling visibility, a shark entering a defined distance, a diver becoming separated, a gas limit, or a change in weather or current.
What is the emergency action? The route to the planned exit, ascent procedure, lost-buddy response, surface signaling, and how the operator summons assistance.
Who leads? The person with authority to alter the route, end the dive, or order an ascent, and the signals that communicate those decisions.
What rescue support exists? Surface cover, communications, evacuation time, and the limits of local medical facilities for the specific site and season.

Repeat the plan with your buddy before entry. If an operator cannot explain how a team will end the dive or manage separation, treat that as a planning gap rather than something to solve after a sighting.

Visibility is a safety decision, not just a photography issue

Reduced visibility shortens reaction time and can increase the chance of surprise encounters, collisions, disorientation, or an uncontrolled ascent. The Canadian Shark Attack Registry advises against diving in less than six metres of visibility where Greenland sharks or other large, mobile sharks may be present. That six-metre threshold is the registry’s recommendation, not a universal law or a substitute for a local risk assessment.

Ask how visibility will be measured, whether the figure is a forecast or an observation from the current dive, and what the team will do if it deteriorates. In low visibility, a diver may not see a shark until it is close, may lose the leader while looking for it, or may misjudge the direction of open water. These hazards reinforce the need for close spacing, simple signals, and a conservative termination rule.

Understand Greenland’s cold-water demands

Divers Alert Network (DAN) describes Greenland as challenging cold-water diving, with subzero temperatures and usually clear visibility. It identifies June through September as the best diving period, while noting that some fjords remain accessible in winter. “Usually clear” does not mean every site or day will be clear, and a favorable season does not remove the effects of cold, current, remoteness, or limited rescue capacity.

DAN says Greenland is not a place for divers who are not seasoned cold-water divers. Your training and recent experience should match the planned depth, exposure, equipment configuration, decompression demands, and emergency support. A diver who is competent in warm, familiar water may still be unprepared for cold-induced gas consumption, dexterity loss, dry-suit problems, or a difficult exit.

DAN also recommends dive-accident insurance that covers medical evacuation. Confirm that coverage applies to the country, activity, depth, season, and remoteness of the planned dive. Insurance does not replace a surface plan: ask who initiates evacuation, how the operator communicates, and how long transfer to appropriate care could take.

Compare sites and operators by preparation, not by shark promises

No operator can promise that a wild-animal encounter will be predictable. You can, however, compare the quality of the plan. Use these questions when evaluating a Greenland or other Arctic dive:

  • Conditions: What visibility, temperature, current, ice, and daylight conditions are expected, and what measurements trigger cancellation?
  • Briefing: Does the leader cover species, behavior, spacing, signals, termination criteria, lost-buddy procedures, and emergency measures?
  • Experience: Has the guide led divers in the site’s cold-water and wildlife conditions, and are novice or non-seasoned cold-water divers excluded?
  • Rescue and evacuation: Is there surface cover, reliable communication, a documented evacuation route, and medical support appropriate to the site?
  • Seasonal access: Are the stated services available in the month you are visiting, particularly if the dive is outside June through September?
  • Local rules: What permits, wildlife-distance rules, reporting requirements, or professional-diving standards apply?

These are planning criteria, not a ranking of named operators. Conditions and services vary by location and season, so verify the current arrangements directly before travel.

Professional and recreational requirements are not the same

For professional diving in Greenland, the Danish Maritime Authority lists special requirements involving equipment, training, and medical examinations. Recreational divers should confirm which national, local, and operator rules apply to their activity rather than assuming that a professional standard automatically governs a recreational trip. Ask the operator and relevant authorities about required qualifications, medical clearance, permits, and emergency contacts.

A practical encounter scenario

Imagine a large shark appears at the edge of visibility during a Greenland dive. The useful response is deliberately uneventful: stop accelerating, signal the buddy and leader, keep the animal in sight, and avoid moving toward it. The leader checks the group and conditions, then applies the pre-briefed choice—continue at the agreed distance or end the dive. If visibility drops below the team’s limit, gas or temperature becomes a concern, or a diver separates, the termination criteria take over. The group exits using the planned route and ascent procedure, reports the sighting to the operator, and does not return to pursue the animal.

Limits of generic Arctic advice

Arctic geography includes Greenland, Canada, Norway, Iceland, Russia, and other waters with different species, regulations, rescue systems, and operator practices. The guidance here is general encounter advice paired with Greenland-shark and Greenland-diving context. It cannot establish one emergency, evacuation, or reporting protocol for every Arctic location.

Before entry, make the local plan explicit: who leads, what ends the dive, how the group exits, how separation is handled, and who calls for help. During the encounter, calm observation and non-interference protect your team and the shark; the site-specific briefing determines what happens next.
