If you see a mountain lion near your home, do not run toward it or away from it. Face the animal, stay upright, make yourself look larger, and leave it a clear route to retreat. Keep children close and secure pets. If the lion approaches or acts aggressively, shout and throw available objects without turning your back; if it attacks, fight back and try to remain standing. Once you are safe, report the sighting to the wildlife agency or park authority responsible for your location.
What to do in the moment
Mountain-lion encounter guidance from the National Park Service (NPS), the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (USFWS), and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) converges on a few actions: do not run, do not approach, face the animal, and give it room to leave. The aim is to avoid provoking a chase or cornering the lion while keeping yourself and anyone with you together and visible.

- Stop and face the lion. Stay upright and maintain eye contact. Do not turn your back, run, crouch, or bend over.
- Give it an escape route. Do not move toward it or try to get closer for a photograph. Avoid blocking its path or crowding it. If you can create distance while still facing it, do so calmly rather than running.
- Make yourself look larger. Raise your arms or open your jacket. Wave your arms slowly and speak firmly and loudly.
- Keep children close. Do not let a child run. If a small child is with you, pick them up only if you can do so without bending over or turning away from the lion.
- Respond if it advances or acts aggressively. Shout and throw rocks, sticks, or other available objects while continuing to face the animal.
Most lions try to avoid confrontation, according to NPS and Rocky Mountain National Park guidance. Space matters: an animal that has room to leave may retreat, while approaching it or cutting off its route can make the situation more dangerous. Do not follow it if it moves away.

If you spot a lion outside while you are indoors, stay inside and keep children and pets there; do not go out to approach it or drive it away. If you are already outside, use the encounter steps above and move toward a secure place only if you can do so without running or turning your back. These are practical applications of the agencies’ core instructions not to approach, run, or corner the animal; local agency advice should guide what to do after the immediate encounter.

If you have a dog or other pet with you
Keep the pet close and prevent it from running after the lion. Do not release a dog to chase or confront the animal. Once safely indoors, bring outdoor pets inside and keep them there, particularly at night. A pet or livestock injury or loss may qualify as a depredation incident that CDFW asks property owners to report.
If a mountain lion attacks
Fight back with whatever is within reach and try to remain standing and facing the animal. Do not play dead. NPS notes that people have used rocks, sticks, jackets, garden tools, and bare hands. The priority is to resist and protect yourself rather than surrendering or turning away.
If another person is with you, keep them close during the encounter rather than sending them to get help while the animal is present. Once you can reach a secure place without increasing the danger, get help and report what happened to the responsible local wildlife agency or park authority.

Make the area around your home less inviting
Home precautions address different potential contributors to conflict: visibility, hiding cover, prey attractants, and the security of pets or livestock. CDFW and Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (Montana FWP) recommend several practical measures. These steps can reduce opportunities for an unseen approach or remove attractants, but the agencies do not promise that lighting or landscaping will prevent an encounter.
| Concern | What to do | Guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Limited visibility | Keep the home perimeter lit. Outdoor lighting, including a motion-sensor light as one way to implement that general suggestion, can make it harder for a lion to approach unseen. | CDFW and Montana FWP recommend outdoor lighting. Neither endorses a particular light or claims it guarantees safety. |
| Places to hide near people | Remove dense or low vegetation near the home, especially around children’s play areas. | CDFW and Montana FWP recommend reducing dense cover where people and children spend time. |
| Deer and other prey attractants | Do not feed deer. Do not leave pet food outdoors; food can attract smaller prey animals. If you find a carcass, avoid it because a lion may return to feed. | NPS advises against feeding deer and approaching carcasses; Montana FWP advises against feeding pets outdoors. |
| Pets and livestock outside | Bring pets indoors at night when possible. Otherwise, use a secure enclosure; Montana FWP recommends a kennel with a secure top. Keep livestock and large outdoor pets in sturdy, covered shelters at night. | CDFW and Montana FWP advise securing animals; NPS says not to leave pets outside at night. |
| Children playing outdoors | Supervise children outside, particularly around dawn and dusk, and do not let them run ahead. Remove dense or low vegetation near play areas. | NPS emphasizes supervision and keeping children from running ahead; Montana FWP recommends clearing cover near play areas. |
Choose precautions by the problem they address
Lighting improves visibility; vegetation management reduces hiding cover near people; avoiding outdoor food and deer feeding addresses prey attractants; and secure shelters protect animals that otherwise remain outside. These are complementary precautions, not interchangeable guarantees. For example, lighting does not secure a pet, and a covered kennel does not remove nearby hiding cover.
If you use a motion-sensor light, treat it as a practical form of outdoor lighting rather than a tested wildlife deterrent. The guidance supports lighting in general, not a specific product, model, or claimed level of protection.

Supervise children and manage outdoor activity
Children should remain close enough for an adult to intervene, rather than running ahead outdoors. NPS calls for particular care around dawn and dusk. If a lion is visible, keep the child beside you; pick up a small child only if doing so does not require bending down or turning your back. The reason is practical: a child who panics and runs can separate from the adult.

Do not let curiosity turn a sighting into a closer encounter. Keep people and pets away from the animal, and avoid approaching a carcass because the lion may return to feed. If the animal leaves, do not follow it to establish where it went.
Report the sighting to the right local authority
After reaching safety, contact the wildlife agency or park ranger responsible for the area and follow its current instructions. Reporting channels and what authorities ask residents to report depend on location, so do not assume that a phone number or process for one state applies elsewhere.

CDFW specifically directs property owners to report potential or actual mountain-lion depredation, including loss of a pet or livestock. USFWS lists contacts for its California service area; those contacts are not general nationwide numbers. If the encounter occurred in or near a park, contact the relevant park authority as well as following local wildlife-agency instructions.
When reporting, relay the facts you observed and the location, and follow the agency’s direction about any further action. Do not go back outside to track the animal or gather details that would require approaching it.

How to understand the risk
Seeing a lion near a home does not by itself establish that it is about to attack. CDFW says, “Few sightings result in a mountain lion being identified as an imminent threat to public safety.” That is an agency statement about sightings in its California context, not a guarantee about an individual encounter. Respond cautiously even when the animal appears to be moving away.

CDFW reports fewer than 50 verified mountain-lion attacks on humans in California since 1890, including six fatal incidents. That cumulative figure is California-specific, begins in 1890, and is not a national attack count or a measure of the risk at a particular home. It provides context for why sightings and attacks should not be treated as the same event; it does not change the recommended response if a lion is close.
Do not apply park distance rules as a home rule
Rocky Mountain National Park’s wildlife guidance includes a 120-foot wildlife-distance recommendation for that park. It is park-specific, not a universal residential buffer or a substitute for the immediate encounter steps above. Follow the authority responsible for your location rather than treating that distance as a rule that applies everywhere.
