If you encounter a humpback whale in the Arabian Sea, slow down early, keep well clear of its path, and never pursue it. The Environment Society of Oman recommends slowing at 500 metres, keeping below 4 knots, and staying at least 100 metres from a whale. Treat those figures as regional guidance, not a rule that automatically applies across every Arabian Sea jurisdiction: check local requirements and obey any stricter direction from authorities or your vessel’s captain.
What to do as soon as you see a whale
- Reduce speed at a distance. The Environment Society of Oman’s Whale and Dolphin Watching Guide advises slowing when you are 500 metres away and keeping a constant speed below 4 knots. Avoid abrupt changes in speed or direction.
- Keep out of its route. Stay at least 100 metres from the whale under the guide’s recommendation. If an approach is necessary, come from the side and slightly behind; do not approach head-on or from directly behind, cross in front of it, overtake it, or wait in its path.
- Observe without interfering. Do not chase, harass, rev the engine to provoke a response, or drive between whales. Do not approach a calf, or a whale that is feeding or resting.
The guide is useful regional advice, but the International Whaling Commission’s Oman country profile describes the 2014 guidelines as draft guidance under review for formal adoption. That does not establish a binding rule for all countries bordering the Arabian Sea. Check the rules where you are boating and follow any stricter local instruction.

How to respond if the whale comes close
If your boat is already stopped
Stay where you are. The Oman guide advises not re-engaging the propeller until the whale or other animals have moved away. Restart only when there is a safe opportunity to do so without putting the boat in their path.

Keep your speed low and your movement predictable. Do not make a sudden turn toward the whale or try to regain a viewing position. The guide’s instruction to maintain course and speed when dolphins bow-ride applies specifically to dolphins; it should not be treated as humpback-specific advice.

When to end the encounter
End the viewing if the whale seems to be avoiding the vessel or shows possible disturbance. The Oman guide identifies these behaviors as reasons to give animals more space:
- Repeated changes in direction.
- Sudden, repeated, or prolonged dives.
- Tight groups swimming away.
- Aggressive tail or flipper slaps.
The guide recommends limiting viewing to 30 minutes. When leaving, depart slowly and keep to low speed until you are at least 100 metres away. Do not linger or circle to extend the encounter.

Why extra care matters in the Arabian Sea
Arabian Sea humpbacks are a geographically isolated subpopulation. The IWC describes the population as Endangered and numbering fewer than 100 individuals, and identifies entanglement in fishing gear, vessel strikes, underwater noise, and habitat loss or degradation among its threats. A vessel encounter is an opportunity to reduce avoidable pressure, not to get closer for a better view.
A separate estimate should not be mistaken for a current census: the Marine Mammal Protected Areas Task Force’s Oman Arabian Sea IMMA fact sheet cites an estimate of 82 individuals, with a 95% confidence interval of 60–111, attributed to Minton et al. (2008). It is historical, not a present-day count.

Where and when sightings are reported
The IWC handbook says Arabian Sea humpbacks are encountered mainly around Dhofar, Oman, and notes small-scale marine tourism around the Hallaniyat Islands. It describes sightings there as sporadic, with December–March the peak period. This is regional context, not a guarantee of a sighting or a forecast for any particular trip. The handbook’s broader Whale Watching Handbook also explains why management guidance commonly addresses vessel numbers, speed, approach distance, and time spent with whales.
