What to Do if You Encounter a Bear, Big Cat, or Other Dangerous Animal

Stay calm, create distance, and use the response for the species and behavior in front of you. Do not approach, feed, touch, crowd, or try to photograph a wild animal at close range. Keep children beside you, control pets, leave the animal an escape route, and follow the current rules for the park or region you are visiting. A bear, mountain lion, bison, moose, and snake require different actions; advice for one species can be dangerous when applied to another.

The first 30 seconds: a safe response to any wildlife encounter

Wildlife can react defensively when people get too close, especially when an animal has young, is feeding, is near a carcass, or is in mating season. Even an animal that appears calm can change behavior quickly. The safest general sequence is:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. Stop and assess. Do not rush toward the animal, and do not make a sudden movement that could trigger a chase or defensive reaction.
  2. Keep people together. Bring children close, keep pets under physical control where permitted, and prevent anyone from surrounding the animal.
  3. Give it a route out. Move away from the animal rather than blocking its path. If it approaches, you are responsible for backing up to restore distance.
  4. Increase distance slowly. Use a calm voice when the species guidance calls for it, and keep the animal in view without provoking it.
  5. Use cover or emergency help when needed. Trees, vehicles, buildings, or terrain can provide protection. Report a dangerous or unusually persistent encounter to a ranger or local emergency service.

Never rely on a universal “wildlife move.” Running is wrong for some predators but is specifically advised when a bison charges. Curling up is appropriate after a moose knocks you down, not as a default response to every animal. The sections below explain those differences.

Distance rules and prevention before an encounter

Follow the local minimum distance

Distance requirements are set by the land manager and are not universal. Yellowstone National Park’s current guidance requires at least 100 yards (91 meters) from bears, wolves, and cougars and 25 yards (23 meters) from other animals, including bison and elk. Other parks and jurisdictions may use different distances, so check the destination’s current wildlife page, signs, and ranger instructions before setting out.

Yellowstone’s news release of June 26, 2026, summarizes the rule plainly: “If wildlife approach you, move away to maintain the required distance.” Treat that as an active responsibility, not merely a suggestion to stay where you are.

Reduce the chance of surprising an animal

  • Pay attention near dense vegetation, blind corners, stream crossings, and other places where visibility is limited.
  • Keep away from carcasses, feeding areas, and young animals. A parent defending offspring can be more dangerous than an animal traveling alone.
  • Keep children within immediate reach and teach them not to run toward wildlife for a photograph.
  • Leash pets where required and do not let a dog run toward, bark at, or chase wildlife.
  • Secure food, garbage, toiletries, and other scented items in the animal-resistant storage required by the park or campground.
  • Carry a charged phone or other communication method, know the nearest exit or ranger station, and tell someone your route when traveling in remote country.

Do not attempt to close the distance for a better photograph. A telephoto lens or a viewing area is safer than moving closer. “Keeping wildlife wild” also means never feeding or handling an animal, even if it appears habituated or injured; contact a ranger or wildlife authority instead.

Bear encounters: identify the situation before you act

Bear behavior varies by species, individual, food, cubs, and whether the bear feels threatened. The National Park Service says, “Remember every bear encounter is different.” Use the destination’s current bear instructions first, because local recommendations and legal requirements can differ.

If the bear has not noticed you

Do not call out or move toward it. Leave quietly by the way you came, keeping your group together and avoiding a route that would place you between the bear and food, cubs, or an escape path.

If the bear has noticed you

Stay calm. Do not run, scream, or make sudden movements. Speak in a calm, confident voice so the bear can recognize you as a person. Pick up small children, put away food, keep your backpack on, and slowly wave your arms if the local guidance recommends it. Avoid direct eye contact, watch the bear, and back away slowly without turning your back.

Do not crowd a bear that is standing, sniffing, or moving toward you. It may be trying to identify you, but the behavior can change. Continue creating distance and look for a safe route or cover.

Bear spray and a charging bear in Yellowstone

Yellowstone National Park advises people in bear habitat to carry bear spray in an accessible holster, not buried in a pack. Its safety-press-kit guidance says to deploy spray when a charging bear is 60 feet (18 meters) away or less. That distance and procedure are Yellowstone instructions; confirm the rules, product requirements, and training advice for another jurisdiction. Bear spray is not a general-purpose defense against every dangerous animal and does not guarantee safety.

If a bear makes contact: follow the local scenario guidance

For the defensive-contact scenario described by Yellowstone, the park instructs a person to drop face-down, keep the pack on, protect the neck and face, remain still and quiet, and wait several minutes after the bear leaves before moving. This is not a blanket rule for every bear encounter. A bear that behaves predatory or continues an attack may require different action, and other parks may phrase defensive and predatory responses differently. Check the destination’s bear guidance before your trip and follow ranger instructions during an incident.

Mountain lion or cougar: make yourself difficult to mistake for prey

National Park Service mountain-lion guidance is specific to mountain lions in the regions it covers; do not automatically apply it to leopards, jaguars, or other big cats elsewhere.

If a mountain lion is watching or approaching

  • Do not run. Running can trigger a chase response.
  • Face the lion and remain standing. Do not crouch or bend over.
  • Make yourself look larger by raising your arms, opening a jacket, or holding an object overhead when you can do so safely.
  • Speak firmly and back away slowly, leaving the animal a way to depart.
  • Pick up a small child without turning away or crouching if possible; keep the child close and prevent anyone from running.
  • Never approach kittens. A mother may be nearby, and the kittens need a clear escape route.

The NPS states the objective directly: “If you encounter a lion, remember the goals are to convince it that you are not prey and that you may be dangerous.” If the lion attacks, fight back, try to remain standing, and protect your head and neck. North Cascades National Park’s wildlife page similarly says, “If a black bear, cougar, or wolf attacks you, stay on your feet and always fight back.”

Bison: the major exception to ‘do not run’ advice

Bison can look slow but are powerful and fast. Yellowstone’s safety page says a bison can run three times faster than a human. The park requires at least 25 yards (23 meters) of distance from bison and other listed animals.

Recognize warning behavior

Head bobbing, staring, pawing, bellowing, and a raised tail are warning signs. A bison may react when a person or dog is too close, blocks its route, or approaches a calf.

If a bison charges

Unlike bear or mountain-lion advice, Yellowstone says to immediately walk or run away. If the bison follows, use bear spray while moving away if you have it, and get behind a tree, vehicle, or other substantial cover. Do not stand your ground to “show dominance,” and do not wait for a charge to come closer before leaving. The park’s 25-yard rule is a minimum, not a target for photography.

Yellowstone reported that a 12-year-old visitor was injured by a bison near Mud Volcano on June 26, 2026; the release said the incident was still under investigation when published. The same release stated, “Bison have injured more people in Yellowstone than any other animal.” That comparison applies to Yellowstone, not to wildlife injuries nationwide.

Moose: what to do when one detects you or knocks you down

Alaska National Park Service guidance says not to alert a moose that has not detected you. If it has seen you, speak softly and move away slowly. Give a cow with young extra space and never position yourself between a cow and calf.

If a moose knocks you down

Curl into a ball, protect your head with your arms, keep still, and move only after the moose has backed off. Do not try to stand while it is still kicking or stomping near you. Once it leaves, move toward cover and seek medical help for injuries.

Snakes: leave room and treat every bite as an emergency

When you see a snake

Do not move closer to decide whether it is venomous. Do not handle, provoke, kill, or capture it. Leave it room to cross the trail; if it blocks your route, wait rather than stepping over or near it. The National Park Service at Little River Canyon states: “The NPS does not encourage visitors to get close enough to a snake to try to determine whether it is venomous or not, and wildlife should not be handled regardless.”

After a bite

  1. Move away from the snake without attempting to catch or photograph it.
  2. Stay as calm and still as practical, and have someone call emergency services.
  3. Obtain medical treatment immediately, even if symptoms have not appeared.

Do not rely on improvised methods or online first-aid recipes. Treatment details depend on the species, location, and medical system; follow emergency dispatchers and clinicians.

Children, pets, groups, and limited escape routes

Children

Keep children physically close before you reach a wildlife hotspot, not only after an animal appears. Pick up a small child for a bear or mountain lion when the species guidance calls for it, but do not crouch or turn away from a mountain lion. In a bison or moose encounter, move the whole group toward cover and prevent a child from running independently.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pets

A dog can provoke a chase or defensive response and may return to you with the animal following. Keep it leashed where required, shorten the lead, and do not send it toward wildlife. If an animal is already close, prioritize human safety and follow ranger instructions rather than trying to wrestle a pet away.

Groups and narrow trails

Regroup without surrounding the animal. Leave a clear corridor and backtrack if a narrow trail, bridge, or vehicle queue prevents a safe retreat. Do not push past an animal or split up so that some people are on the far side of it.

When to seek cover, call for help, and report the encounter

  • Seek immediate cover behind a vehicle, sturdy tree, building, or other barrier when a bison follows, a predator attacks, or terrain leaves no open retreat.
  • Call emergency services for any bite, trampling, serious fall, attack, or person who cannot move safely.
  • Notify a ranger about an animal that repeatedly approaches people, blocks a trail, is injured, or has obtained human food. Give the location, species, direction of travel, group size, and whether anyone was hurt.
  • Follow official closure notices. A trail or campsite may be closed after a carcass, food-conditioning incident, or aggressive encounter.

Quick comparison: the right action depends on species and behavior

Situation Primary response Critical mistake to avoid
Bear has not noticed you Leave quietly; do not surprise it. Calling out or moving closer for a photo.
Bear has noticed you Stay calm, speak calmly, keep children close, and back away slowly while watching it. Running, screaming, or making sudden movements.
Charging bear in Yellowstone Use accessible bear spray at 60 feet (18 m) or less, according to Yellowstone guidance. Transferring that threshold to another jurisdiction without checking local rules.
Mountain lion Face it, appear larger, speak firmly, back away, and fight back if attacked. Running, crouching, or turning your back.
Charging bison Walk or run away immediately; use cover and bear spray if it follows. Standing your ground because predator advice says not to run.
Moose knocks you down Curl up, protect your head, stay still until it backs off. Trying to stand or kick at it while it is on top of you.
Snake on trail Wait or detour; leave it room to cross. Stepping over it or handling it to identify the species.
Snake bite Move away, call emergency services, and obtain medical care promptly. Waiting for symptoms or attempting unverified home treatment.

Before your trip: a practical wildlife-safety checklist

  • Read the current wildlife and distance rules for the exact park, state, or country.
  • Learn which animals are common in the season and route you selected, including whether young or carcasses have been reported.
  • Pack food and scented items for the required animal-resistant storage.
  • In bear country, carry bear spray where it is legal and recommended, keep it reachable in a holster, and learn its operation before hiking.
  • Tell companions what to do with children and pets so nobody improvises during a sighting.
  • Save the park’s emergency number and ranger-station location offline in case there is no signal.
  • Turn around when visibility, weather, darkness, or a blocked route makes it impossible to maintain the required distance.

Official National Park Service pages emphasize that wildlife guidance is local and situation-dependent. Read the destination’s latest notices immediately before leaving, obey posted closures, and ask a ranger about unusual conditions such as a carcass, food-conditioned animal, or recent aggressive encounter.
