What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Stop using the page, do not enter anything else, and work out what happened: a click alone does not prove that your Microsoft account was taken over or that your device is infected. The urgent steps depend on whether you typed a password, supplied a verification code, approved a sign-in, shared financial details, or downloaded a file.
Do these things immediately
- Stop interacting with the page. Do not enter a password, approve a sign-in prompt, provide a verification code, answer more questions, or download anything. Close the tab or window.
- Record the incident. Note the approximate time, how the link arrived, the account and device involved, every item you entered, and whether anything downloaded or opened. This information helps Microsoft, your employer, your bank, or investigators respond accurately.
- Use a trusted route to Microsoft. Open a new tab and type an address you already know, use a saved bookmark, or find Microsoft through a search you perform yourself. Do not use another link or telephone number supplied by the suspicious page. Microsoft’s Outlook.com guidance says an address bar that does not include
login.live.comcan indicate a phishing site; do not type your password there. - Decide which branch applies. The response is different for a click-only event, a submitted password, a shared code, a financial disclosure, or a downloaded file.
- Keep the original message. You will need it to report the incident, including its headers. Do not reply to the sender.
If you clicked but entered nothing
A browser click by itself is not evidence of an account takeover or a confirmed malware infection. If you closed the page without typing information, approving authentication, or downloading and opening a file, there may be no credential to reset. Still report the message or site, delete the message after reporting, and watch for follow-up attempts.

Do not revisit the page to “check” it. A phishing page can change behavior, and returning to it gives the attacker another opportunity to pressure you into entering data or downloading software. If the message appears to come from someone you know, verify that person’s account through a separate channel rather than replying to the suspicious message.
If you entered a Microsoft password
Change the password through the real account site
From the trusted Microsoft account site, change the affected password immediately. Choose a new password that is unique to that account. If you reused the same password anywhere else, change those accounts too, beginning with email, banking, work systems, and other services that can reset your identity. Do not use a password supplied by the phishing page or by anyone contacting you afterward.

A password manager is optional, but it can help generate and store a different password for every account. You do not need to buy one to complete this response.
Inspect Recent activity
Open your Microsoft account’s Recent activity view and examine the past 30 days. Look for unfamiliar successful sign-ins, password changes, security-information changes, new aliases, app permissions, and other events you did not initiate.
For an unusual event, Microsoft may show the date and time, approximate location, IP address, device or operating system, and the app or browser used. Location is not conclusive: mobile networks and other routing can make a legitimate sign-in appear to come from the wrong place. Assess the event type and the device and time along with the geography.
If an event offers This wasn’t me, select it and follow the security prompts. Microsoft says this process asks you to change the password and update security information. If the account page shows suspicious sign-in attempts or profile changes, use Secure your account and complete the requested steps.

Check recovery and access settings
Confirm that the alternate email address and phone number used for recovery still belong to you. Review aliases and app permissions for changes you do not recognize. An attacker who changes recovery details can keep access even after a password reset, so treat any unfamiliar security information as an active compromise.
Turn on multifactor authentication
Enable multifactor authentication (MFA), also called two-step verification, if it is not already enabled. MFA adds a second check after the password. Keep a backup recovery method under your control and store recovery information safely. A physical security key is another possible MFA method, but compatibility varies by Microsoft account type, device, browser, and workplace policy; check those requirements before buying any key.
If you can no longer sign in
Use Microsoft’s official compromised-account recovery and support routes reached from Microsoft’s own site. If the attacker changed the recovery email, phone number, or other security information, explain that change in the recovery process. Ignore unsolicited “account recovery” offers and any phone number displayed by the fake page.

Change the account password from the official Microsoft site, review Recent activity, check recovery information and app permissions, and enable or reconfigure MFA. If this is a work or school account, contact your IT support team immediately; the organization may need to revoke sessions, investigate sign-in records, or reset tenant-specific authentication settings. The exact cleanup sequence differs between personal accounts and managed Microsoft 365 environments, so do not assume a consumer-account procedure covers a workplace account.
If you shared work, school, personal, or financial information
Work or school accounts
Tell your organization’s IT or security team promptly, even if you changed the password yourself. Include the time, the message, the account used, anything entered, and whether a code was approved or a file opened. Early notification lets administrators investigate activity and protect other people who may have received the same message.
Bank or card details
If you entered a card number, bank account number, payment password, or other financial information, contact the bank or card issuer using the number printed on the card or the institution’s official website. Explain that the information was submitted to a phishing site and ask what account monitoring, replacement, or transaction protections are appropriate. Do not use contact information from the suspicious message or page.
Identity information or money lost
If money was taken or you believe identity theft occurred, report it through the appropriate local law-enforcement and consumer-protection channels. In the United States, Microsoft’s identity-theft guidance points readers to the Federal Trade Commission’s reporting route; readers elsewhere should use their own country’s official reporting service. Preserve the message, screenshots, transaction records, and notes you made at the start.

If you downloaded or opened a file
Clicking a link is not proof that malware installed, but opening an attachment, executable, document, or pop-up can create additional risk. Install current operating-system and browser updates, and run a check with trusted, up-to-date security protection. If the file was opened on a work device, tell IT before deleting evidence or attempting extensive cleanup.
Pay attention to new symptoms such as unexplained sign-ins, disabled security tools, unexpected pop-ups, unfamiliar applications, browser changes, or unusual battery and network activity. If you see them, stop using the affected device for sensitive account access and contact your organization’s support team or a qualified security professional. Do not buy a paid scanner solely because you clicked a link; the need for deeper remediation depends on what was downloaded, opened, and observed on the device.

Edge
In Microsoft Edge, use Settings and more > Help and feedback and choose the option to report an unsafe site.
Other email applications
If you do not use Outlook, Microsoft says to attach the original email to a new message addressed to [email protected]. Do not simply forward the message: the original headers are needed for analysis.
After reporting, delete the message and avoid revisiting the page. If the sender appears to be a friend, coworker, supplier, or family member, contact that person separately so they can check whether their account was misused.
What not to do after a phishing click
- Do not continue filling out the form to see what it asks for.
- Do not approve a sign-in prompt you did not initiate.
- Do not share a second verification code with someone who calls or messages you.
- Do not use a phone number, recovery service, or download offered by the fake page.
- Do not assume that a familiar Microsoft logo, colors, or padlock icon proves authenticity.
- Do not reset only one reused password while leaving the same password active on other accounts.
- Do not erase the original message before reporting it if your employer, bank, or investigators may need its headers.
How to judge the level of risk
Use your notes to classify the incident:
- Click only: close the page, report and delete the message, and remain alert for follow-up attempts. A click alone does not establish theft or infection.
- Password entered: change it immediately on the official site, change reused copies, inspect Recent activity, verify recovery details, and enable MFA.
- Code supplied or prompt approved: treat authentication as potentially compromised, complete the password and activity review, and contact work or school IT when applicable.
- Financial information supplied: call the bank or card issuer through an official channel and monitor for unauthorized activity.
- File downloaded or opened: update the device, use trusted current security protection, and escalate if symptoms appear or the device is managed by an organization.
The central rule is simple: do not panic because a page opened, but do act quickly when you entered, approved, downloaded, or opened something. Use only Microsoft’s genuine account controls and official support routes, and involve your employer, bank, or local authorities whenever the information shared makes the incident larger than a personal login.
