First identify whether the problem is a platform’s trading restriction, a custodian’s failure or inability to return the token, or the issuer’s redemption process. These involve different parties and rules. Record the token, network, provider’s legal entity and your EU country; then ask the provider in writing which process is blocking you and what contractual term or technical requirement it relies on.
Is the problem trading, custody or redemption?
A stablecoin being unavailable to trade does not, by itself, show that you cannot withdraw it. Likewise, a failed withdrawal from an exchange is not necessarily an issuer refusing to redeem the token.

| Problem | What may be happening | Who to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Trading restriction | The platform has disabled buying, selling or exchanging the token. This does not automatically establish that custody or transfers are also blocked. | The platform: ask separately whether you can still transfer the token out. |
| Custody or withdrawal failure | A provider holding the token for you may be applying an account, network, address or technical restriction—or may be failing to return the asset. | The custodian: ask what is preventing return of the same type of crypto-asset. |
| Issuer redemption | You are asking the token issuer to redeem it for its referenced value or currency, rather than asking a platform to transfer tokens you hold there. | The issuer: check the token’s white paper and redemption terms. |
If you hold the token in self-custody, no exchange custodian is holding it for you. A platform’s trading restriction is therefore a different issue from whether your wallet can send the token on its network. Network support, token controls and issuer redemption terms may still matter.

“Stablecoin” is a broad label, not one legal category under the EU’s Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA). An electronic money token (EMT) generally refers to one official currency. An asset-referenced token (ART) refers to another value or right, or a combination of values or rights. Check the issuer’s white paper and terms rather than relying on a ticker or the word “stablecoin.”

| MiCA category | Broad redemption basis described by the joint European Supervisory Authorities | Where to check the process |
|---|---|---|
| EMT | Redemption at full face value in the currency the token references. | The issuer’s terms and white paper; eligibility, steps and timing depend on the applicable terms. |
| ART | Redemption at the market value of the assets referenced by the token. | The issuer’s terms and white paper; eligibility, steps and timing depend on the applicable terms. |
This is the broad distinction in the 2025 joint EBA, EIOPA and ESMA consumer factsheet, not a promise of immediate or cost-free payment in every case. The factsheet also cautions that stablecoins may become less stable, especially in stressed market conditions.
What if a custodian will not return your tokens?
For a crypto-asset service provider (CASP) that provides custody and administration, MiCA’s return obligation concerns the crypto-assets it holds for the client. In an answer dated 18 February 2026, the European Commission clarified on ESMA’s Q&A page (ESMA_QA_2320) that the provider must return the same type of crypto-asset held when the client made the request.

That does not mean every address, account or network route must be supported without conditions. The provider may set agreed technical requirements, require an eligible account or DLT address, and charge fees. Those requirements must not make return difficult for most clients. Ask for the supported transfer method, any applicable fee, the relevant account or address requirements and the contractual clause the provider relies on.

A provider may offer conversion to fiat or another token as an option if you request it and the provider is authorised for the relevant service. But MiCA does not allow an exchange service that calls a transaction a purchase of a crypto-asset when the asset is never delivered and the client can only receive its fiat value. The European Commission stated this in its 18 February 2026 answer on ESMA’s Q&A page, ESMA_QA_2550.

What if the platform has stopped trading the token?
Ask whether the restriction applies only to buying or exchanging, or also to withdrawals and custody. In a January 2025 statement concerning non-MiCA-compliant ARTs and EMTs, ESMA said mere custody and transfer of the affected assets should remain possible during the transition. The statement set a transition timeline ending in Q1 2025; that is historical context, not a new deadline or proof that a particular platform supports a token today.
Do not assume a past listing means the platform must continue trading a token, or that a trading restriction automatically prevents you from transferring it. Request the platform’s current position for your specific token, network and account, and a written explanation of any separate withdrawal restriction.

What should you do now?
- Write down the relevant details. Record your EU country, the provider’s legal entity, token name, network or chain, and whether the token is held in a custodial account or self-custody wallet.
- Preserve your records. Keep account statements, transaction hashes, screenshots of the restriction or error, support messages, the applicable terms, and any notice with a deadline.
- Use the provider’s formal support or complaint channel. State whether you are asking to trade, withdraw assets held in custody, or redeem with the issuer. Ask the provider to identify which process is blocked, the relevant contract term, any supported transfer method and fee, and its expected review time.
- Check the provider’s authorisation. Verify the legal entity against ESMA’s register and the relevant national regulator’s register. Confirm that the entity you used—not just a similarly named brand—is the one listed.
- Escalate if the response does not resolve the issue. Consult the published MiCA complaint procedure of the national competent authority for your country and the provider entity. The EBA also suggests considering an ombudsman where appropriate; availability depends on the country and circumstances.
Which national authority or ombudsman applies cannot be determined without your country and the provider’s legal entity. A provider outside the applicable EU authorisation framework may leave you with fewer protections and fewer recovery options.
