What to Do If You Can’t Sign In to Your PSN Account After a Hack

If you still control the email address linked to your PlayStation Network account, secure that mailbox and use Sony’s account-recovery flow. If you cannot access the email, or you see changes to your sign-in ID, online ID, or password that you did not make, contact PlayStation Support through its Online Assistant instead. A sign-in failure is not always a hack, but these steps help you respond without giving a suspected attacker another opportunity.

Choose the right recovery route

  • You can access the linked email: secure it, then try Sony’s self-service recovery steps.
  • You cannot access that email, or account details changed without your permission: go directly to the PlayStation Online Assistant. Do not keep sending reset links to an inbox you cannot control.
  • You are blocked by two-step verification (2SV): use a saved backup code if you have one; otherwise contact support.

Sony’s account-recovery guidance says: “If you don’t recognize a sign-in ID, online ID and/or password change on your account, please contact us using our Online Assistant.” The US recovery page is at PlayStation account recovery.

Secure your email before resetting PSN

If you suspect someone else has access to the email account linked to PSN, start from a trusted device and secure that mailbox. Change its password to a strong, unique one and review the email provider’s account-security options for unfamiliar access. Email can be used to reset access to other services, so a PSN reset link is only useful if you control the inbox that receives it. Sony’s PlayStation security best practices recommend unique passwords for accounts.

If you cannot regain control of the mailbox, move to PlayStation Support rather than relying on an email reset that may reach someone else.

Recover your account when you still have the linked email

  1. Open PlayStation Account Management recovery from a browser.
  2. Select Trouble Signing In? > Recover Your Account.
  3. Enter the sign-in ID associated with the account—the email address—and follow the on-screen instructions.
  4. Open Sony’s secure email link and complete the requested steps to set a new password. Sony says the email may take a few minutes to arrive.

Sony’s password guidance describes a password using uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters. Choose one you do not use for your email or another account, and do not share it. If the recovery email does not arrive, check the mailbox’s spam or junk folder; if you cannot access the linked email or suspect its address was changed, use the Online Assistant instead.

Contact support if the email or account details are no longer yours

Use the PlayStation Online Assistant if you cannot access or remember the account email, or do not recognize a change to the sign-in ID, online ID, or password. Sony’s Account & Security support hub also provides account-compromise help. Open official PlayStation pages directly rather than following links in unsolicited messages claiming your account has been reported or needs urgent verification.

If two-step verification is blocking sign-in

If you enabled 2SV but cannot receive a text or authenticator code, use a backup code you saved during setup. On the sign-in screen, choose Trouble Receiving Code? > Sign In Using a Backup Code. Sony says it provides ten backup codes when 2SV is set up, and each code can be used once. Keep any unused codes in a secure place.

  • PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.

If you have no usable backup code and cannot access your verification method, contact PlayStation Support. Do the same if unexpected 2SV messages arrive and you cannot change the sign-in method. Sony documents 2SV through SMS or an authenticator app in its Account & Security hub.

After you regain access, end other sessions and strengthen security

  1. Change the PSN password to a unique one, or set up a passkey if that option is available for your account.
  2. In Account Management, go to Security > Sign Out on All Devices to end other active sessions. Sony’s sign-in and sign-out instructions explain this option.
  3. Review the account’s security settings and enable 2SV if appropriate. Save the backup codes somewhere secure, separate from the device used to sign in.
  4. Secure the linked email with its own unique password as well.
  5. Check for unexpected account changes and purchases before considering the recovery complete.

Sony warns against sharing credentials, suspicious direct messages claiming an account has been reported, and QR codes sent by another person. If you use a passkey, note that Sony says the PlayStation Store password-at-checkout option is incompatible with passkeys; do not assume both controls can be enabled together. More guidance is available in Sony’s security best-practices page.

Review purchases and subscriptions if anything looks unfamiliar

Check your PlayStation transaction history and use the compromised-account or unauthorized-payment route in Sony’s Account & Security support hub if you find activity you did not authorize. First check whether an unfamiliar transaction is a subscription renewal, a family member’s purchase, or a duplicate transaction. If your card shows unauthorized activity, contact your card issuer as appropriate. Sony and the issuer determine what remedies are available; a refund or other outcome is not guaranteed.

Rule out other sign-in problems when you see no signs of a takeover

If your account details appear unchanged, a failed sign-in alone does not prove someone hacked the account. Sony’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking that you are using the correct sign-in email, updating console system software, trying Account Management online, and restarting the console and router. If online access fails, check whether suspension guidance applies. The troubleshooting page linked here is localized to Bulgaria, so support steps and available remedies may differ by country: Troubleshoot sign-in issues on PlayStation.
