If you changed your AT&T password and can no longer sign in, first type the AT&T ID and new password manually, check capitalization, and confirm that the ID belongs to the account you are trying to open. Then replace the old password saved in your browser, phone, computer, mail app, or other device. If the new credentials still fail, use AT&T’s password-reset process, complete any additional passcode check, and update AT&T Mail credentials. A locked email account may require an hour’s wait or another password reset. If AT&T offers no recovery method or the process still fails, call 800.288.2020.
Start with the likely cause: a stale or mistyped credential
A password change does not guarantee that every sign-in attempt is using the new password. Autofill may still submit the previous one, a password manager may have stored an outdated entry, or a single capitalization error may cause rejection. AT&T passwords are case-sensitive.

- Open the AT&T sign-in page or app and clear the password field.
- Type the AT&T ID yourself rather than selecting a saved suggestion.
- Type the new password manually. Check every uppercase and lowercase letter, number, and symbol.
- Make sure Caps Lock is off. AT&T’s sign-in FAQ says:
Are passwords case-sensitive? Yes. Enter uppercase and lowercase letters carefully. Check that Caps Lock is off when you are typing a password for signing in.
- Submit the sign-in once and read the exact error message before trying again.
AT&T’s password support guidance similarly says to type the ID and password manually to avoid autofill errors. Do not keep submitting an uncertain password repeatedly, especially when testing AT&T Mail, because repeated failures can trigger a lock.
Confirm that you are using the right AT&T ID
One person can have more than one AT&T ID for different services or accounts. A password can be correct for one ID while the account you want is attached to another.

Check the ID in the app
Look at the ID displayed on the AT&T sign-in or account-selection screen. Remove an old saved ID and enter the one associated with the wireless, internet, phone, or other account you are trying to manage. If you have several accounts, compare the ID with an AT&T bill, account confirmation, or other AT&T record that identifies the service.
Do not assume the email address is the only possible ID
Use the exact AT&T ID that was used when the password was changed. Switching between an alternate email address, a wireless number, and a different account ID can send you through recovery for the wrong account.
Replace the old password saved on every device
Changing the password on AT&T’s website does not automatically overwrite copies stored elsewhere. Update each place that can submit credentials silently.

Reset the password when the new one is rejected
If a manually entered password fails for the correct ID, use AT&T’s official reset flow instead of guessing. AT&T says the process asks for the AT&T ID and the last name associated with it, then offers a verification method.
- Start AT&T’s password-reset option from the sign-in screen.
- Enter the AT&T ID and associated last name exactly as requested.
- Select an available verification method, such as a code sent to an eligible phone number or email address.
- Enter the verification code and follow the prompts to create and confirm a new password.
- Return to the sign-in page and type the new password manually once before saving it anywhere.
When AT&T offers a temporary password
Where the account qualifies, AT&T may send a temporary password by text message or email. Use it as instructed to sign in, then create a permanent password when prompted. A temporary credential is not a substitute for completing the account’s verification steps; if delivery does not arrive, check that the displayed destination is still accessible and request the recovery option again rather than repeatedly entering guesses.
Meet AT&T’s password rules without making the password predictable
AT&T’s password page states that a sign-in password must be 8–24 characters. It can use uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and these listed special characters: +, =, #, ?, *, $, !, underscore, and hyphen.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA reset can be rejected if the entry falls outside that length or character set. Avoid passwords based on your name, address, birth date, phone number, or obvious sequences. Satisfying the format requirement should not mean choosing an easy-to-guess phrase. A long, unique combination that fits the allowed characters is safer than a short personal word with one symbol added.

Check whether an extra security passcode is blocking sign-in
Some AT&T accounts require an additional passcode after the ID and password are accepted. This is a separate security step, so a correct password alone may not complete sign-in.
- Read the prompt carefully to determine whether AT&T wants a one-time verification code or an account passcode.
- Use the delivery method shown by AT&T and enter the code before it expires.
- If the prompt refers to a wireless passcode and you can sign in through another authorized route, AT&T’s FAQ says you can change it by selecting Get new passcode.
If the code goes to a phone number or email address you can no longer access, the ordinary reset may stop at verification. Do not substitute a different account’s code; use the recovery or support route for the affected ID.
Remember that AT&T Mail can share the same password
When the same AT&T ID and password are used for AT&T services and AT&T Mail, the password is shared with Currently.com mail access. A successful web sign-in does not update the password stored in an email app automatically.
Update mail apps after the change
Open the incoming and outgoing account settings in each mail app and replace the old password. If the app has separate password fields for receiving and sending mail, update both. Then allow the app to synchronize and confirm that it can receive and send a test message.

Distinguish a bad password from an email lock
If webmail and every mail app reject the credentials after several attempts, stop retrying. AT&T’s email guidance attributes locks to too many sign-in attempts. Its stated options are to wait one hour or reset the password. The unlock guidance uses the message For your protection, your account was locked.
After the hour has passed, try the reset flow rather than cycling through old passwords. If AT&T flags the account as inactive or you suspect someone else accessed it, follow the security and support instructions shown for that account.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Separate an app or browser problem from an account problem
Test the same ID and password in a second access method. For example, if the AT&T app fails, try the AT&T website in a browser; if the website fails, try the current app. A successful sign-in in one method points to a local app or browser issue rather than a rejected credential.

- Force-close the app and restart the phone or tablet.
- Remove old saved AT&T IDs from the app’s sign-in screen.
- Enter the current ID and password manually.
- Install the latest version of the app if an update is available.
- If the problem remains, uninstall and reinstall the app, then test again.
If AT&T Mail fails in a browser
- Try another supported browser to see whether the failure is browser-specific.
- Clear the affected browser’s cookies and cache, then reopen the sign-in page.
- Confirm that JavaScript is enabled.
- Temporarily disable extensions that modify pages, block scripts, or manage passwords, and retry.
- Type the credentials manually after clearing the old autofill entry.
These steps remove local session and form problems; they do not bypass account verification or a lock.

Know when to stop retrying and contact AT&T
Use support when recovery cannot reach an available phone number or email address, the ID cannot be identified, verification repeatedly fails, or a reset succeeds but sign-in is still rejected after the saved credentials have been replaced.
AT&T lists 800.288.2020 for customers who have no password-recovery option or continue to have trouble signing in. Have the affected AT&T ID and account details ready, but do not disclose a password or verification code to anyone who contacts you unexpectedly.
A short recovery checklist
- Enter the new password manually and check uppercase, lowercase, Caps Lock, and symbols.
- Verify that the AT&T ID matches the specific account.
- Replace stale credentials in browsers, devices, apps, and email clients.
- Use AT&T’s reset flow with the ID and associated last name if the password still fails.
- Complete any additional passcode prompt.
- Update AT&T Mail or Currently.com clients that share the password.
- If email is locked after failed attempts, wait one hour or reset rather than continuing to guess.
- Test another browser or the current app to isolate a local software problem.
