Start by checking Nintendo’s service status and Mario Kart World’s update, then run System Settings → Internet → Test Connection on your Nintendo Switch 2. The result separates a failed console Internet connection from a matchmaking problem involving NAT, latency, your network type, or another player’s connection. Apply one change at a time, test again, and escalate to your ISP, router maker, or Nintendo when the evidence points outside the console.
First, identify which kind of failure you have
There are two broad failure patterns. If the Switch 2 cannot complete its Internet connection test, the immediate problem is the console’s path to the Internet or Nintendo’s services. If the test succeeds but a race will not start, times out while players are joining, or disconnects as matchmaking begins, the likely causes include peer-to-peer restrictions, high latency, an unsuitable Internet service type, or a problem on another participant’s network.

A successful connection to Nintendo’s services therefore does not prove that every peer-to-peer race connection will work. Mario Kart World races depend on the network relationship among the participating consoles, not only on whether your console can reach Nintendo.

- Check for a Nintendo service outage or maintenance and confirm that Mario Kart World is updated.
- Make sure every player is using the same game version and has the required Nintendo Switch Online membership.
- Run the Switch 2 Internet connection test and write down the result, NAT type, download speed, and upload speed.
- Interpret the NAT and latency clues instead of treating speed as the only measure.
- Improve the wireless conditions or compare with a docked Ethernet connection, then test again.
- If the pattern points to an ISP, router, or another player, contact the appropriate support channel.
Doing the steps in this order prevents you from changing router settings when a service outage or an out-of-date game is the real cause.

Check service availability, game updates, and membership
Look for an outage or maintenance window
Before changing your network, check Nintendo’s current service-status information. If Nintendo reports an outage or scheduled maintenance affecting online play, wait until the service returns and try the race again. A local connection test cannot repair an unavailable matchmaking service.
Install the current Mario Kart World update
Open the game’s software-update option on the Switch 2 and allow the console to install any available update. Nintendo says the required update must be installed for Internet features, and players trying to race together need to be on the same software version. At the time covered by Nintendo’s 2026 support information, version 1.8.0, released September 9, 2026, was listed as the latest update. Versions change, so treat that number as a dated reference rather than a permanent requirement.
Have every participant check for updates. One unupdated console can prevent a group from entering the same online session even when the other consoles have working Internet connections.
Confirm Nintendo Switch Online access
Online play requires an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. Verify the membership on each account that is attempting to use the game’s Internet features. This requirement is separate from your NAT result and from the quality of your broadband service.

Run the Switch 2 Internet connection test
On the console, open System Settings → Internet → Test Connection. Wait for the test to finish and record all four useful outputs:
- Internet Connection: whether the console connected with Nintendo’s services.
- NAT Type: the console’s reported network-translation environment.
- Download speed: the measured downstream result at that moment.
- Upload speed: the measured upstream result at that moment.
Write down the exact error code and message too if the test fails. Speeds can vary between tests, so keeping the result from before and after a change is more useful than relying on a single number.
Read the NAT result correctly

NAT describes more than your own console. Nintendo notes that the other player’s NAT can affect whether the two consoles establish a session. If you can race successfully with most people but fail consistently with one person, that pattern is evidence worth reporting to both players’ network support contacts rather than proof that your Switch 2 is defective.
Do not mistake speed for latency
A connection can show acceptable download and upload figures yet still fail when matchmaking needs a timely peer-to-peer exchange. Latency, sometimes experienced as delay or a timeout, can make the race lobby expire before the consoles finish negotiating. Nintendo’s error-code guidance also identifies Internet service types that are unsuitable for peer-to-peer play as a possible cause.

Nintendo’s matchmaking support flow uses 3 Mbps as a download-speed branch in its troubleshooting questions. That figure is a diagnostic branch in Nintendo’s flow, not a promised minimum that guarantees Mario Kart World races will work. A higher speed number cannot cancel out restrictive NAT, unstable wireless conditions, high latency, or an unsuitable service type.
Use the error code as a branch in the diagnosis
If the console displays an error, copy the complete code and wording before restarting anything. Search Nintendo Support for that exact code and follow the code-specific instructions. For example, Nintendo identifies error 2618-0514 as potentially related to suboptimal NAT, high latency, or an Internet service type it does not recommend for peer-to-peer play. Nintendo’s suggested path includes trying another network and following its matchmaking troubleshooting steps.
Do not treat the code as a verdict about one device. It narrows the likely network conditions, but the other player’s NAT and the route between networks can still affect the result.

Improve the connection one change at a time
Test a better Wi-Fi position
For a wireless test, move the Switch 2 closer to the router and reduce obstacles or nearby electronics that may interfere with the signal. Nintendo’s UK guidance suggests temporarily testing at about 3–5 metres (10–15 feet) from the router. This is a troubleshooting position, not a universal placement requirement for normal play.

Run System Settings → Internet → Test Connection again after moving the console. Then retry matchmaking and note whether the NAT result, speeds, or race behavior changed. If the console is normally used farther away, the close-range test tells you whether signal conditions at the usual location deserve further attention.
Compare with a docked Ethernet connection
Nintendo’s Mario Kart World instructions describe a wired comparison using an Ethernet cable from the Switch 2 dock to the router or gateway. The console must be docked to use that wired connection. After connecting it, run the Internet test again and attempt a race.
This comparison can reveal wireless interference or weak signal at the console’s normal location. It is not a guaranteed cure for a restrictive NAT, high latency caused elsewhere, a service outage, or an ISP limitation. If wired and wireless tests show the same failure, the cause is less likely to be radio interference alone.

Restart network equipment safely
Restart the router or gateway and the Switch 2, then wait for the network equipment to finish reconnecting before running the test. Nintendo’s NAT guidance also suggests toggling IPv6 off and testing again. Change only one setting at a time and record the result so you know which change, if any, affected matchmaking.

Router menus and IPv6 controls differ by manufacturer. For firmware updates or a factory reset, Nintendo directs users to the router manufacturer. Contact that manufacturer before performing a reset: a reset can erase wireless names, passwords, parental controls, port rules, and ISP-specific settings, and the correct recovery procedure varies by model.

When comparing plans or connections, look at NAT behavior, latency, stability, and service type as well as speed. Nintendo’s guidance does not support ranking Internet plans by a download number alone.
Know when to contact support
Contact your ISP or network administrator
Contact the ISP when another network works, the NAT is restrictive, or the provider controls the gateway and its peer-to-peer behavior. Give them the NAT result, both speed readings, the exact error code, whether IPv6 was enabled, and whether a wired test changed anything. Ask whether the service uses a configuration that restricts inbound or peer-to-peer traffic and whether they can explain the observed latency.
Contact the router manufacturer
Use the router maker’s support route for firmware instructions, IPv6 settings, or model-specific configuration. Avoid applying generic port-forwarding or reset instructions from an unrelated model; Nintendo’s guidance does not say that one universal router setting guarantees a fix.
Contact Nintendo Support
If the console-side checks, update verification, alternate-network test, and router or ISP consultation do not resolve the problem, contact Nintendo Support. Include the Switch 2 Internet test output, error code and message, Mario Kart World version, the type of connection used, and whether the issue affects every opponent or only a particular player. This information lets support distinguish a service, account, console, or network-path problem.
Separate online racing from local LAN play
Multi-console LAN play is a different setup from ordinary Internet matchmaking. Nintendo says LAN play requires a wired router, and a networking switch may be needed depending on how many consoles are connected. That equipment guidance applies to a local wired arrangement; it is not a routine purchase requirement for diagnosing a normal online race that uses Internet matchmaking.
A practical stop condition
Stop changing settings once you have identified a consistent pattern: a failed Internet test, NAT F, success on another network, or failure with one specific player. Preserve the before-and-after notes and send them to the support party that controls the relevant part of the connection. Repeatedly rebooting or changing several router options at once can erase the evidence that would make the fault easier to locate.
