If your Zcash wallet will not open, connect, sync, or show a balance during a network upgrade, do not assume your funds are gone or frozen. A wallet-app outage, a remote service problem, a full-node incompatibility, and a seed-phrase restoration are different faults with different fixes.
First identify which situation you have, then use only the wallet provider’s official update and recovery process. Never give a recovery phrase or private key to support, a website, or anyone offering to “unlock” your funds.

Start with a safe diagnosis
Write down four facts before changing anything: the wallet name, your device and operating-system version, whether the wallet is custodial or self-custody, and the exact error message. Also note whether the wallet is installed locally, connects to a remote or light-wallet service, or is backed by a full Zcash node. Those details determine whether the problem is an app launch failure, a synchronization failure, or a recovery-scan issue.
A network upgrade changes consensus rules at a scheduled block height. It does not, by itself, erase keys or transfer ownership of funds. However, software that has not adopted the new rules can stop syncing, connect to an obsolete chain, or show incomplete data. The protocol specification says upgraded nodes disconnect from peers below the minimum protocol version; non-upgraded nodes can be partitioned onto an old-protocol network, and a chain reorganization across an activation height is possible. If the wallet app will not open or you cannot sign in
- Stop using links from messages. Open the wallet’s normal app store listing, its signed desktop installer, or a bookmark you created yourself. Do not install a “recovery” application sent by email, direct message, or a stranger.
- Check the wallet provider’s official status and support pages. Look for an upgrade notice, maintenance event, or a statement about supported network versions. A provider may need to update its backend before balances and transactions display normally.
- Update through the official channel. Confirm the application name, publisher, and release notes. If the provider has published a checksum or signature-verification procedure, follow that procedure rather than downloading a replacement from an unofficial mirror.
- Preserve your recovery information. Do not uninstall a self-custody wallet merely to try random fixes unless you have verified that the recovery phrase or other required backup is available and legible. Take care not to expose the phrase while photographing or copying it.
- Escalate without disclosing secrets. Give support the app version, operating system, error text, and approximate time of failure. A legitimate agent should not ask for your seed phrase, private key, passphrase, or one-time authentication code.
The Zcash Foundation does not hold users’ wallet keys or seed phrases, and its privacy policy says it does not have access to the contents of shielded transactions. Its policy also does not govern every third-party wallet. You can verify that limitation in the Zcash Foundation privacy policy. Contacting the Foundation cannot restore keys that it never possessed.
If the wallet opens but will not sync
Remote or light-wallet synchronization
Many wallets do not download and validate the entire Zcash chain themselves. They use a remote service to provide block data, transaction history, or shielded-pool scanning. In that design, the wallet interface can open while the service is offline or not yet compatible with the upgrade.
- Check the wallet provider’s status page and upgrade announcement.
- Confirm that the device has a stable internet connection and that the wallet is not blocked by a firewall, VPN, captive portal, or incorrect system time.
- Use the provider’s documented “rescan,” “refresh,” or network-selection option only if its support documentation recommends it. Repeatedly deleting app data can remove local metadata and make a later scan longer.
- Record the last block height or synchronization timestamp shown by the wallet. Give that value and the exact error to the provider; it helps distinguish a remote outage from a local database problem.
Do not assume that a missing recent transaction means a spend failed. Until the wallet has synchronized through the relevant blocks, its display may be incomplete. Check the provider’s official guidance before attempting a second transaction, because broadcasting again could create an unintended duplicate payment if the first transaction was accepted.

Full-node operation
If you operate a local node, the node software must support the active consensus rules. Current official upgrade pages direct node operators to Zebra documentation and state that zcashd is being deprecated. The Network Upgrade 7 page describes NU7 as planned and says its activation height has not yet been set; it directs operators to the official NU7 guidance and the Zebra documentation linked there.
Use the upgrade instructions for the exact node implementation and operating system. Do not copy database files from an unknown source or switch to a different binary solely because it claims to “repair” the wallet. If your node is still running zcashd, read the migration and release notes supplied by the Zcash project before deciding whether to move to Zebra. The official pages for NU6.1 and NU6 also direct full-node operators to current Zebra and zcashd documentation.
A node that has followed an obsolete chain may need to resynchronize after upgrading. That can take substantially longer than restarting a wallet, especially when the local database must verify many blocks. Keep the node running from a reliable power and network source, and follow the project’s documented backup and shutdown procedure rather than terminating the process repeatedly.

Do you need to update your wallet because of the upgrade?
There is no universal answer. A wallet that relies on a maintained remote service may receive compatibility changes without any action from you. A self-hosted full node does require compatible node software. A custodial service controls the infrastructure and recovery process, while a self-custody wallet leaves key management and backup responsibility with you.

Official upgrade dates illustrate why the wallet type matters:

These dates identify protocol events, not a schedule requiring every phone or desktop wallet to be reinstalled. Follow the notice issued by your own wallet provider. If it does not publish compatibility information, ask for the supported network version and whether your account or shielded pool requires a rescan.

Restoring a wallet from a recovery phrase
Use restoration only through the wallet’s official, locally installed recovery flow or the provider’s documented web interface. Verify the application publisher and domain before entering anything. A recovery phrase is effectively a set of keys: anyone who sees it can attempt to spend the associated funds.
- Confirm that the wallet supports the account type, transparent addresses, and shielded pools you used. A phrase may be valid while the chosen application lacks support for a particular pool or derivation scheme.
- Enter the words in the exact order, using the wallet’s own recovery screen. Never paste the phrase into a support chat, online form, “balance checker,” or recovery service.
- Choose the network and account options exactly as documented by the wallet. Do not create a new wallet and conclude that the original funds are missing merely because the new account is empty.
- Allow the scan to finish. A restored wallet may show zero or a partial balance while it searches historical blocks, downloads compact data, or rebuilds local indexes.
- After synchronization completes, verify receiving addresses and transaction history before making a new payment. If the result is still incomplete, capture the scan status and contact the wallet provider without revealing the phrase.
Why shielded restoration can take longer
Draft ZIP 326: NU6.3 Consequences for Wallets, created June 30, 2026, describes a technical consequence for wallet scanning. The use_qsk setting is not stored in wallet recovery information, so a wallet restoring from a seed may initially need to scan using both possible values. This is intended to make restoration work across wallet implementations. ZIP 326 is draft technical guidance, not a promise about the behavior or interface of any particular consumer wallet.

Shielded notes can require a wider historical scan than a newly created wallet, and the wallet may need to finish downloading and indexing data before it can identify spendable notes. Keep the application open and connected as instructed by its documentation; do not interrupt the scan simply because the visible balance has not changed yet.
Security rules during an outage
- Never send a seed phrase, private key, spending key, viewing key, or wallet passphrase to support personnel or a recovery company.
- Never install software supplied through an unsolicited message or grant remote-control access to someone claiming to be a Zcash technician.
- Do not pay a stranger who promises to unlock funds, bypass an upgrade, or recover a phrase. A service that never controlled your keys cannot restore them on your behalf.
- Do not publish screenshots that reveal addresses, QR codes, transaction identifiers tied to your identity, or recovery information.
- Do not enter a phrase into a website simply because it displays a Zcash logo. Check the domain and use the wallet’s normal recovery path.
When to wait, and when to escalate
Waiting is reasonable when the wallet provider has announced maintenance, the node is actively downloading or verifying blocks, or a documented shielded rescan is progressing. Record the time, block height, and status message so you can tell whether progress is occurring.
Escalate to the wallet provider when the official status page shows the service as operational but your app repeatedly fails, the scan stops at the same height, or an update produces a reproducible error. Include diagnostic logs only after checking that they do not contain seed phrases, private keys, authentication tokens, or personally identifying data.
For a full node, use the current upgrade documentation rather than generic wallet support. The project’s official upgrade pages explain that zcashd is being deprecated and that Zebra is the forward-looking full-node implementation. For a third-party wallet, the provider—not the Zcash Foundation—must explain its compatibility, because the Foundation does not operate every wallet or possess users’ keys.
