Treat a Trezor bought from an unauthorized reseller as untrusted until it passes the official checks for its exact model. Do not enter a wallet backup, PIN, or passphrase anywhere, and do not initialize a new device if firmware is already installed. Preserve the packaging and purchase evidence, check the seals and setup behavior, and contact Trezor Support if anything fails.
If Trezor Suite reports an authenticity failure, the correct response depends on whether the device has ever been initialized. Stop using a new, uninitialized device immediately. For an already initialized device, protect the funds first without disclosing secret recovery information, then retire the device and its backup after following Trezor’s current transfer guidance.

What “unauthorized reseller” means
An unauthorized seller does not prove that your individual Trezor is counterfeit or compromised. It does mean the device’s chain of custody is uncertain. Trezor’s official safety guidance says: “Never buy a Trezor from an unauthorized third party, as you can never tell who may have had access to it before you.” Someone who had access before you could have opened the package, altered the device, or handled its setup materials.
That uncertainty is why you should verify the device before trusting it with assets. Do not rely on a marketplace’s reputation, a product photograph, or a low price as an authenticity test. Follow the checks for your exact model and packaging generation.

Do these things before connecting or setting up the device
- Preserve evidence. Photograph the box, seals, labels, accessories, shipping parcel, and the listing or order page before discarding anything. Keep the order confirmation, seller name, marketplace transaction number, and all messages. These records support a return or dispute.
- Do not enter secrets. Never type a wallet backup (also called a recovery seed), PIN, or passphrase into a website, form, chat, email, or unsolicited “verification” tool. Trezor says support will not ask for these secrets while investigating an authenticity concern.
- Check the model-specific packaging guide. Compare the contents, printing, labels, and seals with the official authentication guide for your exact model. Packaging has changed over time, so a box that differs from a current product photograph is not, by itself, proof of tampering.
- Stop if a relevant seal is damaged or contents are missing. Do not proceed merely because the device looks clean. Trezor’s Model One guidance says to contact support immediately when its seal is not intact; other models use different packaging details.
- Use the official Trezor Suite download channel. Complete setup only through the current official software and the instructions for your model. Avoid links or setup directions sent by the seller, a social-media account, or a person who contacts you unexpectedly.
Check whether the device arrived with firmware
Trezor says its devices are shipped without firmware. Firmware is installed during the normal setup process, and setup checks whether firmware is already present.
If a device sold as new already contains firmware, do not use it. A prior installation means the device may have been initialized or handled before you received it. Contact Trezor Support with your evidence and ask for model-specific instructions rather than attempting to “clean” or reset the device yourself.
This check applies to a new device that has not yet been initialized. If you already created a wallet on it, follow the separate response for an authenticity failure described below; do not erase anything before you understand how to protect the funds.

Understand the authenticity checks
Packaging and seals
Packaging is a useful first check, not a standalone verdict. Trezor documents changes between packaging generations. Inspect the seal style, placement, printing, and included components against the guide for your model and the approximate age of the product. An older legitimate package can look different from a current retail image.
Photographs are especially important when a seal is lifted, reattached, cut, or missing. Do not peel or replace a seal while you are gathering evidence. If the guide identifies a damaged seal as a reason to stop, contact support before setup.
Box numbers are not device serial numbers
Trezor says its devices do not have serial numbers. A number printed on the box identifies a packaging batch; it is not a device serial number and cannot independently prove that the hardware is genuine. Do not ask support to authenticate a device from that number alone. Use the authorized-seller list, the model-specific packaging guide, and the software checks together.

Firmware signature verification
When the device is connected, Trezor Suite verifies that the installed firmware is correctly signed. Trezor’s firmware-authenticity material describes checks involving the firmware version and RevisionID; a mismatch produces a warning. A successful signature check is an important safeguard, but it should not be turned into a claim that every possible tampering risk is impossible.

What to do if Trezor Suite reports an authenticity failure
New and uninitialized device
- Stop using the device immediately. Do not create a wallet, install firmware manually, or connect it to other wallet software.
- Save a screenshot or exact wording of the warning, along with the device model, Suite version, order details, and package photographs.
- Contact Trezor Support through its official channel. Explain that the device was bought from an unauthorized reseller and that Suite failed the authenticity check.
- Do not send a wallet backup, PIN, or passphrase. There should be no wallet backup on a genuinely new, uninitialized device; any request for one is unsafe.
A failed check on an unused device is a stop-and-escalate situation. Do not attempt to make it usable by accepting a warning or following instructions from the seller.

Already initialized device
An initialized device requires a different priority: protect the assets without exposing the wallet backup. Do not panic, but stop treating the device and its backup as trustworthy once the official authenticity warning appears.
- Do not disclose the wallet backup, PIN, or passphrase to anyone, including a person claiming to be support.
- Do not create new receiving addresses with the device. Trezor states that a device that fails the authenticity check will not be able to generate new receive addresses.
- Follow Trezor’s current official rescue instructions for moving assets to a wallet created on a legitimate replacement. The available Suite steps can change with software versions and account configurations, so use the live instructions rather than an old click-by-click guide.
- For every transfer, verify the destination address on a trusted screen and confirm the correct network before approving. A mistaken address or network cannot be fixed by the hardware-wallet manufacturer.
- After the funds are safely moved, stop using the suspect device and its wallet backup. Obtain a legitimate replacement, create a new wallet backup on that replacement, and move the funds into the new wallet as directed by Trezor.
The exact migration path can differ by asset, account type, and whether a passphrase or multisignature arrangement is involved. If you are uncertain about a transaction, pause and ask official support for guidance without revealing secret recovery information.

How to evaluate the seller and listing
Trezor identifies its own shop, its official Amazon storefront, and resellers on its current official list as generally safe purchasing channels. It also says authorized stock is supplied by Trezor and kept separate from other goods. That channel-level guidance does not authenticate every marketplace listing: a platform can host multiple sellers, and the name shown on a product page may differ from the business that fulfills the order.

| Check | What a reassuring result looks like | What requires caution |
|---|---|---|
| Seller identity | The actual seller appears on Trezor’s current official reseller list, or the purchase was made through Trezor’s own shop or official Amazon storefront. | The listing is sold by an unknown marketplace account, a private individual, or a seller whose name is not on the current list. |
| Packaging | Seals, printing, labels, and contents match the guide for the exact model and packaging generation. | A seal is damaged, replaced, or missing; contents are absent; or the package cannot be matched to the model guide. |
| Firmware on arrival | A new device begins the normal process of installing firmware during setup. | Firmware is already installed on a device sold as new. |
| Suite result | Trezor Suite accepts correctly signed firmware without an authenticity warning. | Suite reports an authenticity failure or a firmware version or RevisionID mismatch. |
| Returns and warranty | The seller clearly states where returns go and which warranty terms apply in your country. | The seller refuses a return, provides no verifiable business identity, or redirects you to unofficial support. |
Do not treat one reassuring observation as permission to ignore another warning. For example, an intact-looking box does not override preinstalled firmware or a failed Suite check.
Returns, refunds, and compensation
Trezor’s FAQ says its RMA process applies only to purchases completed in its own e-shop. For a device bought elsewhere, Trezor directs customers to contact the seller that made the sale and negotiate compensation directly. Warranty conditions can vary by country and by the reseller’s policy.
- Contact the original seller in writing and state the specific problem: damaged seal, missing contents, preinstalled firmware, or an authenticity warning.
- Attach photographs, the order confirmation, the listing as it appeared when purchased, and any Suite error screenshot. Keep original files and note the date of each communication.
- Open the marketplace’s formal dispute or buyer-protection process if the seller does not respond or proposes unsafe troubleshooting.
- Ask where the device must be returned and whether the seller provides a prepaid label. Do not mail a wallet backup, PIN, or passphrase with the hardware.
- Check the consumer-protection rules that apply where you live. The outcome of a dispute depends on the country, payment method, seller identity, and purchase facts; Trezor’s support pages do not decide those legal rights.
Do not let a seller’s refund process pressure you into completing setup, disabling a warning, or sharing secret recovery information.
When replacing the device makes sense
If an official authenticity check fails, replacement is part of Trezor’s stated protection path after funds are secured. Buy the replacement through Trezor’s official store, its official Amazon storefront, or a reseller listed on the current official reseller page. Check the actual marketplace seller, not only the platform name.
Do not buy a second device until you have recorded the evidence needed for a return or dispute. If an unused device has not failed any check but its provenance remains uncertain, ask Trezor Support to assess the situation before deciding whether replacement is necessary.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Initializing first and checking later: setup should establish whether firmware is already present before you trust the device.
- Entering the recovery seed to “verify” ownership: no legitimate authenticity check requires your wallet backup.
- Relying on a box number: packaging-batch numbers are not serial-number authentication.
- Assuming a different-looking box is counterfeit: packaging generations change; compare with the exact model guide.
- Continuing to receive funds after a failed check: Trezor says a failed device cannot generate new receive addresses.
- Using old migration instructions: Suite workflows change; use the current official warning and transfer guidance.
- Sending assets without checking the network: confirm the address and network for every rescue transfer.
- Contacting unofficial “support” accounts: treat requests for a backup, PIN, or passphrase as a scam signal.
What you should know about the risk
Trezor’s published guidance explains why unauthorized channels are unsafe, but the official material does not provide a named statistic for how often counterfeit or tampered devices are sold. There is therefore no reliable percentage or incident rate to apply to your purchase. The practical response is procedural: preserve evidence, stop at warning signs, use the exact model’s checks, and involve official support without revealing secrets.
