What to Do If You Bought a Ledger Wallet From an Unauthorized Reseller

Do not use the device yet. A Ledger wallet should generate a new recovery phrase during your own setup. If it arrived with recovery words, a PIN, signs of prior use, or an opened package, do not enter anything, do not connect it to a seller-provided app, and do not move funds to it. Preserve the device and packaging, document the seller, and contact Ledger Support. If you continue only after confirming that the device is uninitialized, install Ledger Wallet through an official channel and run Genuine Check before using it.

Why an unauthorized reseller changes the risk

A marketplace product page is not the same thing as an authorized supply chain. A listing can use accurate product photos and model information while a different merchant handles the physical unit. That leaves questions about who possessed the wallet, whether the packaging was opened, and whether anyone had access to a recovery phrase or PIN.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

That uncertainty does not prove that every device from an unauthorized seller is counterfeit or compromised. It does mean you should not treat the purchase as routine. The safest choice is to stop and ask Ledger Support about the reseller and the device. If you decide to evaluate the wallet instead of returning or replacing it, use only Ledger’s official setup software and complete the authenticity check before funding it.

Immediate triage: what to do in the first few minutes

  1. Do not enter a supplied recovery phrase or PIN. Do not type recovery words into a phone, computer, app, website, or support chat. Do not use a PIN printed on a card or written on paper in the package.
  2. Do not scan seller-provided QR codes or install seller-linked software. A QR code in a listing, insert, email, or package can lead to an unofficial wallet or a phishing page.
  3. Stop if the package appears opened or altered. Leave the device, cable, inserts, and box together. Do not attempt to “reset” an item that may already have been initialized.
  4. Record the evidence. Photograph the listing, the merchant name and profile, order confirmation, receipt, shipping label, packaging condition, and any prewritten words or PIN. Keep the original files; do not publish recovery words.
  5. Contact Ledger Support with the reseller information. Explain whether the wallet was initialized, whether the package looked opened, and whether any phrase or PIN was exposed. Never send the recovery words themselves.

These steps preserve your options with the seller, marketplace, and Ledger. They do not guarantee a refund; purchase remedies depend on the transaction, seller, and location.

How a new Ledger wallet should behave

It generates its own recovery phrase

During a legitimate first-time setup, the hardware device generates a new recovery phrase and displays it for you to write down. The phrase is not supposed to arrive prewritten in the box, in an email, or in a setup card. A wallet that arrives with words ready to use is not giving you a convenient shortcut; it is giving a potential third party knowledge of the keys those words control.

It asks you to create your own PIN

A new device should not arrive with a preconfigured PIN. If the screen shows that it is already initialized, or if a seller tells you to use a supplied PIN, stop. Someone who knows both a wallet’s recovery phrase or PIN and its associated setup details may be able to control the assets protected by that wallet.

Legitimate software does not ask for the phrase on another device

A genuine signer does not require you to enter the recovery phrase into a desktop or mobile app, a browser page, a phone call, or a computer form. The phrase belongs on the hardware device only when the device’s legitimate workflow requires it. Anyone asking for the words outside that workflow should be treated as an attacker, even if the message uses Ledger branding.

Use the device’s state to choose your path

What you observe Recommended action Why
Prewritten recovery words, a supplied PIN, or a device that says it is initialized Do not use it. Contact Ledger Support with reseller details and preserve the device and packaging. A third party may know the credentials that control the wallet.
Package appears opened, resealed, or altered Do not proceed with setup. Document the condition and contact Ledger Support. Packaging appearance cannot establish what happened inside, so the supply-chain uncertainty remains.
Device is uninitialized and the package shows no obvious alteration If you continue, obtain Ledger Wallet only from Ledger’s official website or the official iOS or Android app store, then run Genuine Check. Official software is required for the supported authenticity workflow.
Genuine Check fails Stop using the device. Do not fund it or try to bypass the warning; contact Ledger Support and the marketplace or seller. A failed check means the device did not complete the expected cryptographic verification.
Recovery words were entered into an app, website, phone, or computer Treat the phrase as compromised and seek current, asset-specific guidance immediately. Do not disclose the phrase to support or anyone else. Anyone who obtained the words may be able to control the associated private keys.
Genuine Check passes, but the reseller was unauthorized Understand that the check supports Secure Element authenticity but does not make the supply chain risk-free. Consider support, return, or replacement before funding the wallet. The check cannot establish the device’s complete physical history.

Running Genuine Check safely

1. Get the setup software from an official channel

Download Ledger Wallet from Ledger’s official website or from the official iOS or Android app store. Do not follow a link in the seller’s message, scan a QR code supplied with the device, or install a package from an unofficial app store. Check the publisher and the app identity before opening it.

  • This is what security feels like: Ledger touchscreen signers all come with a private, offline, PIN-protected backup, Ledger Recovery Key, to never lose access to your assets.

2. Connect only the device you are evaluating

Follow the setup instructions shown by the official application and on the hardware screen. Create a new PIN on the device when prompted. Do not use a PIN or phrase supplied by the reseller, and do not continue if the wallet reports that it was already initialized.

3. Run Genuine Check before adding funds

Ledger describes Genuine Check as a cryptographic challenge: Ledger Wallet challenges the device’s Secure Element and checks the response against Ledger’s servers. A successful result supports the conclusion that the device contains a genuine Secure Element and is intended to detect counterfeit devices.

4. Stop immediately if the check fails

A failed check is not a troubleshooting invitation to install another application or repeat a seller’s instructions. Disconnect the wallet, keep the evidence, and contact Ledger Support. Do not move assets to a device that failed the check.

What a passing check does—and does not—prove

Genuine Check is an important safeguard, but it is narrower than a complete inspection. Ledger Donjon states: “Note that a Genuine check cannot detect unauthorized physical modifications to the hardware, such as spying implants, if the original Secure Element remains intact.”

  • This is what security feels like: Ledger touchscreen signers all come with a private, offline, PIN-protected backup, Ledger Recovery Key, to never lose access to your assets.

In practical terms, a pass supports authenticity of the Secure Element. It does not prove that the unit was never opened, that every component is original, or that no one handled it before you received it. Packaging appearance, seller reputation, and a passing check each provide limited information; none alone establishes an unbroken physical history.

Because the seller was unauthorized, decide whether that remaining uncertainty is acceptable before funding the wallet. Continuing to use a device after a pass is a choice with residual risk, not a certification that the purchase was safe.

If the wallet arrived initialized

Do not “adopt” the supplied wallet

Do not use the supplied phrase, change the supplied PIN, or assume that a reset makes the original wallet safe. The person who created the phrase may still know it. A reset also does not tell you whether the device was opened or altered.

Contact support with facts, not secrets

Send Ledger Support the merchant identity, order information, model, dates, and a description of the initialization screen or package condition. You can provide photographs of the box and listing, but never include recovery words, a PIN, or screenshots that reveal them.

  • Choose the colors that match your style: express your personality and your crypto management mood, color code your signers, one for each use (trading, staking, HOLDing...).

Preserve the item while next steps are decided

Keep the device and packaging in their received condition unless official support or the marketplace gives you a documented return procedure. Do not dismantle the wallet, probe its casing, or attempt modifications that could destroy evidence or affect a return.

If you already exposed the recovery phrase

Entering the phrase into an app, website, phone, or computer changes the situation: treat the wallet as compromised. Do not assume that deleting the app, changing a password, or resetting the hardware removes the exposure. Do not send the phrase to Ledger Support, a seller, a moderator, or anyone claiming to help.

The correct response depends on the assets, networks, and wallet configuration involved. Use current official guidance for each affected network or wallet and act urgently; there is no single migration procedure that is safe for every asset. Until you have a verified plan, avoid signing requests or following unsolicited instructions from people who contact you about the incident.

Returning, replacing, or continuing: a decision framework

Stop and seek support or a replacement

This is the conservative path when the unit arrived initialized, the package was opened or altered, the check failed, or the phrase was exposed. Buy a replacement directly from Ledger or an authorized reseller, verify the seller at the time of purchase, and repeat the official setup and Genuine Check process with the new device.

Continue only after a clean setup

This path is limited to a device that is uninitialized, obtained with intact-looking packaging, set up with a phrase generated on the hardware, and verified through official Ledger Wallet software. Even then, an unauthorized seller leaves supply-chain uncertainty that a cryptographic check cannot remove. Consider the value of the assets and your tolerance for that uncertainty before using the wallet.

Do not confuse a marketplace remedy with a security verdict

A seller or marketplace may offer a return, replacement, or refund under its own rules. That commercial outcome does not establish whether the device was genuine or modified. Keep your security decision separate from the seller’s customer-service response.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Trusting a sealed-looking box as proof. Appearance cannot establish the device’s complete history.
  • Assuming an unauthorized seller means counterfeit. The evidence establishes risk and uncertainty, not certainty of compromise.
  • Running Genuine Check from an unofficial app. The check is meaningful only when performed through the supported official software.
  • Typing words to “verify” ownership. No legitimate support workflow needs your recovery phrase.
  • Funding first and checking later. Complete setup verification before moving assets.
  • Publishing the phrase in a complaint. Redact recovery words and PINs from every photograph and message.
  • Expecting a universal recovery recipe after exposure. Asset and network differences require current, specific guidance.

A concise checklist

  • Device arrived with a phrase or PIN: stop and contact Ledger Support.
  • Package looked opened or altered: stop, photograph it, and preserve it.
  • Never enter recovery words into an app, phone, computer, or website.
  • Install Ledger Wallet only through Ledger’s official website or official mobile app stores.
  • Run Genuine Check before funding an uninitialized device.
  • Check failure: stop using the wallet.
  • Phrase disclosed: treat it as compromised and obtain asset-specific official guidance without sharing the phrase.
