WhatsApp currently supports Android 6.0 and newer and iOS 15.1 and newer; from November 30, 2026, iPhones will need iOS 15.5 or newer. Do not reset, erase, trade in, or uninstall WhatsApp from the old phone until a backup or transfer has completed and you have opened the important conversations and media on the replacement.

Why WhatsApp stops working on an old phone
There are two fundamentally different causes. An app problem can often be fixed by updating WhatsApp, restarting the phone, correcting storage or network problems, or completing number verification. An unsupported operating system is different: WhatsApp may stop allowing installation or operation because the phone no longer meets its minimum OS requirement.

WhatsApp says it reviews supported systems as devices and software change. Older phones may no longer receive current security updates or have functionality needed by newer versions of WhatsApp. That explanation does not identify one particular bug or security incident; it is a compatibility decision that can change over time.

At the time of writing, WhatsApp’s Help Center lists these minimums:

These thresholds are not permanent. Check WhatsApp’s current “About supported operating systems” page before deciding that a phone is unusable. WhatsApp says, “Before we stop supporting your operating system, you’ll be notified in WhatsApp.” A phone must also be able to receive SMS or calls for account verification; Wi-Fi-only devices are not supported for setting up a new account.
Use this decision path before changing phones
- Identify the exact model and OS. Open the phone’s system settings and look for an entry such as “About phone,” “Software information,” “General,” or “About.” Menu names differ by manufacturer and iOS version. Record the OS version, available storage, and phone number used by WhatsApp.
- Check the manufacturer’s official update route. In system settings, open the software-update section and install an update only if the phone itself offers it. Use the manufacturer’s documented update method for that model and region. Do not install a modified firmware package merely to reach a version the manufacturer does not support.
- Compare the result with WhatsApp’s current requirement. If the installed OS reaches the listed threshold, continue with app troubleshooting. If it does not and no official OS update is offered, treat the phone as unsupported rather than repeatedly reinstalling WhatsApp.
- Update WhatsApp through the official store. On Android, use the phone’s official app store; on iPhone, use Apple’s App Store. Confirm that the phone has a working internet connection and enough free storage, then restart it and try WhatsApp again.
- Complete verification if requested. Keep the SIM active in a phone that can receive the verification SMS or voice call. A data connection alone does not satisfy WhatsApp’s requirement for receiving the code.
- Protect chat data before any migration. If WhatsApp still opens, inspect the backup status and choose an appropriate transfer method before resetting or replacing the device.
How to tell an app fault from an unsupported OS
Signs that an ordinary app fix may work
- The phone’s OS is at or above WhatsApp’s current minimum.
- The official app store offers a WhatsApp update that can be installed.
- WhatsApp opens but messages, media, or verification fail intermittently.
- The phone can connect to the internet and receive SMS or calls, but the app reports a temporary error.
For these cases, install the offered WhatsApp update, restart the phone, confirm automatic date and time are correct, check free storage, and retry on a reliable network. Avoid clearing app data until you know a current backup exists, because local chat data can be lost.

Signs that the OS is the blocker
- The app store says the phone is incompatible or offers no supported WhatsApp release.
- The OS is below Android 6.0 or below the applicable iOS minimum, and the manufacturer offers no official upgrade.
- WhatsApp displays an operating-system support warning or repeatedly asks for a newer system.
- Reinstalling the same app version changes nothing because the underlying OS remains below the requirement.
Installing a newer WhatsApp package cannot overcome an unsupported OS requirement. Do not use unofficial modified apps, sideloaded old builds, OS spoofing, or other unsupported modifications. They can expose account credentials, break updates, and make chat recovery harder.
Back up and preserve chats while the old phone still works
Keep the old phone powered on and connected until the backup or transfer is confirmed on the new device. Note the time and size of the most recent backup; a backup that is old or unexpectedly tiny may not contain the conversations and media you need.
iPhone: check and restore an iCloud chat backup
- On the old iPhone, open WhatsApp and go to Settings > Chats > Chat Backup. Record the last-backup date and size.
- Do not erase the old iPhone while that backup is the only copy of your history.
- On the replacement iPhone, install WhatsApp from the App Store, enter the same phone number, and sign in with the Apple ID used for the backup.
- When WhatsApp offers it, choose Restore Chat History.
- Open several important conversations and media items before wiping the old phone.
Messages sent or received after the latest iCloud backup cannot be restored from that backup. WhatsApp says chat history is not stored on its servers, so it cannot restore a missing history for you without a usable backup.

Android to Android: use Chat Transfer when eligible
WhatsApp lists all of these requirements for its Android-to-Android Chat Transfer:

- The same phone number on both devices.
- The new phone has not been registered in WhatsApp until migration starts.
- The phones are near each other, both have power, and Wi-Fi is enabled.
- On the old phone, open WhatsApp > More Options > Settings > Chats > Transfer chats > Start.
- On the new phone, begin WhatsApp setup and select the option to transfer from the old phone.
- Use the old phone to scan the QR code shown on the new phone.
- Leave both phones nearby and powered until the process reports completion.
- Check conversations, photos, videos, documents, and voice notes on the new phone before deleting anything from the old one.
WhatsApp says a failed or stalled transfer leaves the data available on the old phone. Do not delete data, reset the phone, or uninstall WhatsApp there until the new copy is confirmed. The retrieved Chat Transfer guidance says this feature is currently unavailable in WhatsApp Business, so Business users should rely on the backup and account-transfer options available to their account.
Android cloud-backup account matters
Android backups are tied to both the phone number and the Google Account used to create them. Sign in with those same credentials on the replacement phone. Creating a newer backup in that Google Account replaces the previous backup in that account; do not assume an overwritten copy can be selected later.

Set up WhatsApp on the replacement phone without losing the account
When keeping the same number, move the SIM to the new phone if necessary, install WhatsApp, and enter the old number. WhatsApp may ask the old phone to scan a QR code displayed by the new phone. Registering the number on the new phone logs the old phone out, so complete the backup or transfer first.
If you are changing numbers as well as devices, change the number inside WhatsApp on the old phone before transferring. Moving directly to a new number can leave the old history disconnected and may cause chat history to be lost.
Keep access to the old number until registration and recovery are complete. A phone that cannot receive the verification SMS or call cannot complete a new-account setup, even if it has Wi-Fi.

When an iPhone backup or restore fails
WhatsApp’s troubleshooting guidance calls for checking each of these conditions:
- Try a reliable Wi-Fi connection, another Wi-Fi network, or mobile data where your plan permits it.
- Make sure the iPhone has enough local and iCloud storage.
- Install the latest iOS version available for the phone and the latest WhatsApp version that the OS supports.
- Keep the phone connected to power during a large backup or restore.
- Turn on iCloud Drive and allow WhatsApp to use iCloud in the iPhone’s settings.
- Use the same phone number and Apple/iCloud account that created the backup.
- For an end-to-end encrypted backup, enter the correct password or 64-digit encryption key.
WhatsApp states that available iCloud space should be at least 2.05 times the backup size. That is WhatsApp’s stated requirement, not an independent storage recommendation. If the backup is large, free space before trying again and leave the old phone untouched until the restore succeeds.
If no official OS update is available
Choose a phone that runs a currently supported OS rather than trying to force the old one past its limit. This is a replacement decision, not proof that every WhatsApp failure requires buying a phone: first establish the model, OS version, official update status, and backup state.

An unlocked Android smartphone running a currently supported Android version can be a practical replacement search criterion when the old phone cannot update. Verify the specific handset’s OS-update policy, carrier compatibility, storage, price, and availability in your country before buying; WhatsApp’s compatibility documentation does not endorse a particular model.
