What to Do If Wearable Stress or Burnout Alerts Make You More Anxious

If a wearable’s stress or burnout alerts are making you anxious, treat them as estimates—not diagnoses or verdicts about how you feel. Pause, check your symptoms and the situation around the alert, and consider reducing notifications or taking a short break from tracking. Seek medical advice for concerning physical symptoms, and talk with a health professional if worry is persistent or disrupting daily life.

What a stress or burnout alert can—and cannot—tell you

Wearables infer stress from signals such as heart rate and other physical changes. An algorithm turns those measurements into an estimate; it does not directly read your emotions or establish that you have burnout. The American Medical Association cautions against using wearable data alone to diagnose a condition or guide treatment, while Kaiser Permanente explains that physical signals are not precise readings of a person’s mental or emotional state. AMA guidance and Kaiser Permanente’s explainer provide more detail.

An alert can be a prompt to pause and notice what is happening, not an instruction to keep checking or a reason to judge yourself. Compare it with how you feel, what you were doing, and any symptoms—not with the assumption that the device must be right.

Break the checking loop

If seeing a score makes you worry, and that worry leads you to check again, step out of the loop. Put the device or app aside for a while and focus on your immediate surroundings and how you feel. Banner Health describes warning signs that tracking may be adding strain: checking even when you feel fine, letting a single number change your mood, or trusting the device more than your own experience. Banner Health’s guidance includes these patterns.

You do not need to prove that an alert is wrong before taking a break. The useful question is whether tracking is helping you make sense of your wellbeing or making you feel worse.

Adjust how and when you use the device

  • Take device-free periods. Try time without checking during rest, meals, social plans, or another part of the day when alerts tend to draw you in.
  • Reduce nonessential prompts. If notifications trigger repeated worry, mute or limit the alerts you do not need, or review trends less often. Settings and feature names differ by product, so follow your device’s own instructions rather than assuming there is one universal menu path.
  • Keep clinician-directed monitoring separate. If a device is part of remote monitoring arranged by your care team, ask them before changing the agreed settings or schedule. Consumer stress features and clinician-directed monitoring are not interchangeable. See HHS guidance on remote patient monitoring.

Choose a reset for stress, not for the score

If you feel tense, use a simple stress-management step because it may help you feel steadier—not as a guaranteed way to lower a wearable’s number. U.S. federal MyHealthfinder guidance suggests slowing down and relaxing, getting physical activity, supporting sleep routines, making time for enjoyable activities, connecting with other people, and trying breathing or meditation resources. Pick something manageable for you; an alert does not require you to perform a particular exercise. MyHealthfinder’s stress guidance describes these options.

Let symptoms and their impact guide next steps

Do not use a reassuring score to dismiss physical symptoms, or an elevated score to diagnose yourself. The AMA advises medical attention when repeated abnormal wearable readings occur with symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, or fainting. If you have concerning symptoms, contact a medical professional rather than relying on the alert to assess them. The AMA’s wearable guidance discusses these symptoms.
