Act first to stop more ash entering. Follow local emergency and evacuation instructions, close and lock doors and windows, turn off heating, air-conditioning units and fans, and close fireplace or woodstove dampers. Stay indoors while ash is falling when authorities permit. If you must go outside or clean ash indoors, wear a NIOSH-approved N95 respirator. Avoid driving; if a trip is essential, keep the windows up, switch the air conditioning off and inspect the vehicle’s air filter afterward.
What volcanic ash can do
Volcanic ash is made of fine, hard particles that can become airborne again when disturbed. Inside a house it can enter through open windows, doors, vents and air intakes. In heating and cooling equipment it loads filters, restricts airflow and can reduce system performance. In a vehicle it can clog filtration, scratch surfaces and increase wear in moving parts. Ash on roads can also reduce visibility, make pavement slippery and create a new cloud when traffic passes.

The safest response is staged: reduce exposure while ash is falling, isolate or replace contaminated filters, then clean after the fall has stopped. Your local emergency-management agency remains the authority for shelter, road closures, evacuation and disposal instructions.

2. Stop ash entering the building
- Close and lock exterior doors and windows.
- Turn off heating and air-conditioning equipment, portable fans and other systems that draw outdoor air.
- Close fireplace and woodstove dampers.
- Keep people and pets indoors unless an authority says to leave.
- Cover or otherwise protect outdoor-air intakes that can be safely reached without exposure.
The CDC’s home guidance specifically advises turning off heating and air conditioning units and fans and cleaning or replacing furnace filters.
3. Protect your lungs
If outdoor activity or indoor ash cleanup cannot wait, use a NIOSH-approved N95 respirator. The CDC states: “Wear a NIOSH Approved N95 respirator (also known as an "air purifying respirator") to protect yourself while you are outdoors or while you are cleaning up ash that has gotten indoors.” A particulate respirator filters particles; it does not filter toxic gases or vapors. Check that the model is genuinely NIOSH-approved, forms a close seal and is used according to its instructions. People who cannot obtain a proper fit, including some children and people with facial hair, should seek local public-health advice rather than assuming a loose mask provides equivalent protection.
4. Decide whether a vehicle trip is essential
The CDC’s driving guidance recommends avoiding driving through ash when possible. If driving is unavoidable, keep every window closed and turn the air conditioning off. Use the shortest safe route, obey closures and be prepared for poor visibility and slippery roads.

If ash gets inside your home
Limit movement before cleaning
Every footstep, fan or open door can resuspend fine ash. Keep contaminated outdoor clothing and shoes near the entryway; remove them before moving through clean rooms. Keep children and pets away from deposits. Do not start routine outdoor cleaning while ash is still falling, because new material will quickly cover the area you just cleaned.

Clean rooms without making a dust cloud
Once ashfall has stopped and authorities allow cleanup, use a method suited to the amount and texture of ash. Dry collection is generally preferred because it avoids adding water to electrical equipment and building materials. For very fine ash that lifts readily, lightly dampen the surface first. Do not soak it: excessive water can cement ash into a harder mass that is more difficult to remove.
- Shovel thick deposits into containers or bags where local disposal rules allow.
- Sweep thinner deposits gently, working from cleaner areas toward the collection point.
- Use a vacuum designed for fine particulate material if available; ordinary household vacuums may spread dust or suffer filter damage.
- Wipe remaining residue with a damp cloth after bulk material has been removed.
- Keep doors and air intakes protected during the work so outside ash does not enter again.
Follow municipal instructions for collection, bagging and disposal. Ash should not be washed into drains or storm-water systems.
Air filters, furnaces and HVAC equipment
Why ash overwhelms normal filters
USGS explains that ash entering an HVAC intake can accumulate in filters and equipment, restrict airflow and reduce performance. Household filters are not designed for the suspended particle volumes that can occur during ashfall, so there is no universal replacement interval. Intensity, wind, the building’s intake location and the equipment design all matter.

What to do with a furnace or central-air filter
- Keep the heating or cooling system off while ash is entering the area.
- When it is safe to access the filter, switch the system off at its controls before opening the compartment.
- Inspect the filter for a gray coating, packed pleats, deformation or a large increase in resistance to airflow.
- Clean a reusable filter only by the method specified by the equipment maker. Replace disposable filters with the exact dimensions and type required by the system.
- Check the filter again during prolonged ashfall and after cleanup. Heavy exposure may require repeated changes.
Do not improvise a filter that blocks airflow or does not fit securely. A poorly fitted element can allow ash to bypass the filter, while an overly restrictive one can stress the equipment. The USGS HVAC guidance recommends matching filters to the equipment and inspecting them as conditions demand.
Outdoor HVAC intakes and equipment
For an exposed outdoor intake, USGS advises removing loose ash with a vacuum or gentle air, then wiping with a cloth. Do not wet-clean HVAC equipment: water can clog radiator fins or create a short-circuit risk. Wait until outdoor areas have been cleared before turning the system back on. If ash has entered a blower, coil, motor or electrical enclosure, arrange qualified HVAC service rather than spraying or dismantling it while energized.
If volcanic ash gets in your car
Before driving
Park under cover only if doing so does not put you at risk or conflict with evacuation instructions. Do not brush dry ash aggressively across paint or glass; its abrasive particles can scratch surfaces. Keep doors, windows and the trunk closed until you are ready to inspect the vehicle.
Recommended Free Tools
When driving is unavoidable
- Keep windows closed.
- Turn the air conditioning and outside-air intake off; use recirculation only if your vehicle’s controls permit it without drawing outside air.
- Drive slowly and leave extra distance because ash can reduce visibility and make roads slippery.
- Avoid following vehicles that are creating an ash plume.
- Stop if visibility or road conditions become unsafe.
The USGS vehicle guidance describes ash intrusion through vehicle openings, abrasion of moving parts, clogged filtration systems and increased engine wear. Do not operate the vehicle without its engine air filter installed.

Inspect the vehicle afterward
- Check the engine air filter and its housing. Look for a loaded or damaged element, ash on the clean side of the housing or a lid that no longer seals.
- Inspect the cabin-air filter if the ventilation system was operating or the interior smells dusty.
- Follow the owner’s manual for replacement, cleaning and oil-service requirements. Filter fit and maintenance procedures are specific to the vehicle.
- Have a qualified mechanic inspect the intake, airbox and other affected systems after heavy exposure or whenever you are unsure whether ash passed the filter.
USGS lists oil and filter intervals drawn from the 1980 Mount St. Helens ashfall experience, but the page warns that those recommendations may be out of date for modern automobile technology. Treat them as historical context, not universal service instructions; use your vehicle maker’s current manual and professional advice.
Choosing a cleanup method
| Situation | Preferred approach | Main caution |
|---|---|---|
| Thick outdoor deposits after ashfall ends | Shovel and contain the material | Cover drains first and follow local disposal rules. |
| Thin deposits on hard surfaces | Gentle dry sweeping or collection | Work slowly so ash is not resuspended. |
| Very fine ash that becomes airborne | Lightly dampen, then collect | Do not soak; water can cement ash into a hard layer. |
| HVAC intake or equipment | Vacuum or use gentle air, then wipe | Avoid wet cleaning around fins and electrical parts. |
| Vehicle exterior | Minimize rubbing and use the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions | Dry ash can abrade paint and glass. |
The USGS outdoor-cleanup guidance recommends waiting until ashfall stops, covering drains and favoring dry methods, with only light dampening when necessary.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keeping ash out while you clean
Before beginning, cover building openings and outdoor-air intakes that can be protected safely. Work from the outside inward only after the exterior deposit is controlled. Place contaminated clothing and footwear in a designated area and change before entering clean rooms. The USGS explains additional measures for preventing ash from entering buildings in its building guidance. Do not create a pathway for ash by opening windows for “ventilation” while outdoor air is contaminated.
When to stop and get help
Breathing or irritation symptoms
If ash exposure causes coughing, wheezing, eye irritation, chest discomfort or other symptoms, move away from the affected area and into cleaner air. If symptoms continue, contact a healthcare provider. Seek urgent medical help for severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, confusion or a rapidly worsening condition. People with asthma or other lung disease should follow their clinician’s emergency plan and local public-health advice.

Equipment and vehicle problems
- Call an HVAC professional if a system will not restart, airflow remains poor, a motor or electrical compartment contains ash or you cannot safely clean the intake.
- Use a qualified mechanic after heavy vehicle exposure, visible ash beyond the engine filter, unusual engine noise, warning lights or uncertainty about filter condition.
- Do not energize wet or visibly contaminated electrical equipment.
A practical ashfall kit
Keep supplies together before an eruption or ash plume affects your area:
- NIOSH-approved N95 respirators in sizes that fit household members.
- Spare furnace or HVAC filters that match the installed equipment.
- Vehicle-specific engine and cabin filters if your maintenance schedule permits keeping spares.
- Protective eyewear, gloves, sturdy bags or containers, cloths and a suitable fine-particle vacuum.
- Plastic sheeting or covers for vulnerable openings, plus a way to receive local emergency alerts.
Inspect respirators and filters periodically, and replace any item that is damaged, wet or past its usable condition according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Use official guidance for changing conditions
Ashfall intensity can vary sharply over short distances and over time. Recheck local alerts before going outside, driving or restarting HVAC equipment. The CDC’s respiratory and driving recommendations are available at its volcanic-eruption safety page; its home risk-factor guidance is at CDC’s volcano risk page. Use those instructions together with current directions from local authorities, who control evacuation, shelter and road decisions.
