If volcanic ash is falling, follow local emergency alerts first: shelter indoors or evacuate exactly as directed. Close the building to outside air, avoid unnecessary driving, use a properly fitted NIOSH-approved N95 respirator for unavoidable outdoor exposure or ash cleanup, and damp-clean settled ash instead of sweeping or vacuuming it.

1. Check official instructions before doing anything else

Ashfall is only one possible part of an eruption. Officials may also warn about volcanic gases, lava, lahars, fires, unstable buildings, contaminated water, or road closures. Read or listen to local emergency alerts and obey evacuation orders even if the ash layer looks light. If authorities have ordered sheltering, remain indoors until health or emergency officials say outdoor air is safe. If they have ordered evacuation, leave by the designated route rather than delaying to clean the house or car.

Conditions vary with the volcano, wind, ash chemistry, building type, and distance from the vent. Keep a battery-powered way to receive updates, because ash can disrupt electricity, mobile service, visibility, and travel.

Immediate shelter checklist

  1. Bring people and pets inside, or evacuate if instructed.
  2. Close windows, exterior doors, fireplace dampers, and woodstove dampers.
  3. Turn off fans, heating systems, and air-conditioning equipment that draws or circulates outside air.
  4. Move vehicles under cover if this can be done safely before ashfall intensifies.
  5. Keep necessary medicines, water, food, a flashlight, and communication devices with you.

2. Keep ash from entering your home

Reduce outside-air intake

Fine ash can enter through open windows, door gaps, vents, and mechanical systems. Keep doors closed and use one entry point when practical. Seal large visible gaps with tape, plastic sheeting, or rolled towels. Do not block a required combustion or safety vent in a way that creates a carbon-monoxide or fire hazard; follow the appliance manufacturer’s instructions.

YQ YICHITA N95 Mask NIOSH Approved 25-Pack, Particulate Respirator N95 Face Masks Universal Fit - Individually Wrapped
  • NIOSH Approved : (NIOSH Approval Number: TC-84A-9276) - NIOSH Approved N95 respirator mask certified for at least 95% filtration efficiency against particulate aerosols free of oil.
  • Credible Manufacturer : Manufactured by Shanghai Yunqing Industrial Co., Ltd., a NIOSH approved manufacturer of N95 respirator mask. The mask is listed on the NIOSH website as an approved N95 mask.
  • Standard Head Loops : This is a NIOSH approved N95 mask that straps must go behind head instead of the ears to offer better protection. The straps are firmly attached and made of very comfortable cotton materials, more comfortable to wear for long periods of time.
  • New Upgraded Material : The active filter layer of these N95 masks is composed of dual ultra-high grade electrostatically charged meltblown polypropylene. Our N95 respirators far exceeds NIOSH filtration requirements, filters at least 95% non-oil based airborne particles with less than 60pa breathing resistance. Skin-friendly non-woven inner layer gives you the most comfortable wearing experience.
  • Adjustable Nose Clip : Moldable nose clip with anti-fog cushioning foam provides better seal and reduced fog on eyewear. With plastic covered metal nose clip, it is not easily broken and can be used many times.

Switch off ventilation, fans, and heating or air-conditioning units that bring in outdoor air. If a system must operate for another safety reason, use the manufacturer’s approved recirculation setting and monitor indoor conditions. Replace disposable furnace filters or clean permanent filters frequently, following the equipment instructions. A filter that is visibly loaded with ash can restrict airflow and reduce equipment performance.

Control what comes through the doorway

Leave ashy coats, shoes, and other contaminated clothing outside the main living area where possible. If they must come inside, place them in a closed container or bag until they can be handled without spreading dust. Keep children and pets from playing in deposited ash; paws and fur can carry particles into rooms and be inhaled during grooming.

Protect drinking water

If ash has entered a drinking-water supply, use another source, such as bottled water, until the water provider or public-health authority has tested the supply and declared it safe. Do not assume that clear-looking water is unaffected. Follow local instructions for private wells, roof-catchment systems, tanks, and treatment devices, because ash chemistry and contamination risks differ by eruption.

3. Clean indoor ash without putting it back into the air

Wait for the right time

USGS guidance recommends waiting until ashfall has stopped before general cleanup, except when immediate action is needed to prevent building damage or loss of an essential function. Cleaning while ash is still falling can repeatedly contaminate surfaces and increase exposure. Keep windows and doors closed during cleanup unless local officials specifically advise ventilation.

A damp-cleaning method

  1. Put on a properly fitted NIOSH-approved N95 particulate respirator before disturbing ash. Add eye protection if dust may reach your eyes.
  2. Lightly dampen settled ash with a spray bottle or damp cloth. Do not saturate electrical equipment, plaster, insulation, or other materials that can be damaged by water.
  3. Gently wipe hard surfaces with damp disposable cloths or washable cloths. Work from higher surfaces toward lower ones.
  4. Rinse or replace cloths frequently so you do not spread abrasive particles from one surface to another.
  5. Place used materials and collected ash in sturdy bags or containers according to local disposal instructions.
  6. Wash hands and exposed skin after removing the respirator and gloves.

Avoid dry sweeping, brushing, compressed air, and ordinary vacuum cleaners. These methods can resuspend fine particles; many household vacuums can also blow ash through their exhaust and damage their motors or filters. If local authorities specify specialized equipment or a contractor for heavy contamination, follow that direction instead of improvising.

Why resuspension remains a problem

USGS reports that volcanic ash is often less than 10 microns across, small enough to be inhaled deeply into the lungs. Wind, vehicle movement, foot traffic, and later cleaning can lift deposited ash back into the air for weeks to years after the original ashfall. Continue damp-cleaning high-traffic areas and avoid activities that create dust even after the sky clears.

4. Protect your breathing and recognize symptoms

What exposure can feel like

Ash can irritate the nose and throat and cause a dry cough. People with asthma, bronchitis, chronic lung disease, or other chest problems may develop wheezing, shortness of breath, coughing, or more severe bronchitic symptoms. Children, older adults, and people with respiratory or cardiovascular disease should avoid strenuous activity in airborne ash and spend as little time outdoors as possible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Move to cleaner air and contact a healthcare provider if symptoms continue after exposure ends, worsen, or interfere with normal breathing. Seek urgent medical help for severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, confusion, blue lips, or other emergency symptoms. Follow your clinician’s existing asthma or lung-disease action plan, including prescribed medicines.

Choose respiratory protection for the task

Protection What the guidance supports Important limitation
NIOSH-approved N95 particulate respirator CDC recommends it for outdoor ash exposure and indoor ash cleanup when exposure cannot be avoided. It filters particles, not toxic gases or vapors. Protection depends on a good facial seal.
Nuisance dust mask CDC identifies it as a less-protective last resort when better respiratory protection is unavailable. It is not equivalent to a certified N95 and may provide a poor seal.
Other occupational or emergency-response respirators May be needed for specialized, prolonged, or high-concentration work under an appropriate respiratory-protection program. Selection, fit testing, cartridges, and medical clearance depend on the job and hazards.

A tight-fitting respirator can make breathing feel harder. People with heart or lung disease should ask a health professional whether they can safely wear one. A child’s respirator must fit the child’s face and allow comfortable breathing; an adult mask that leaks around a child’s cheeks is not reliable protection. Do not treat an N95 as protection from volcanic gases.

Check the fit each time

  1. Choose a certified respirator that covers the nose and mouth and matches the wearer’s face.
  2. Place the straps as directed and mold the nose area without leaving gaps.
  3. Perform the manufacturer’s user seal check. Air leaking around the edges means the respirator is not providing its intended protection.
  4. Do not wear facial hair, jewelry, or other items that prevent the sealing surface from contacting the skin.
  5. Replace the respirator when it becomes damaged, dirty, difficult to breathe through, or no longer seals.

5. Decide whether driving is necessary

The safest choice during ashfall is to avoid nonessential travel. Ash can reduce visibility and traction, cover lane markings, and make roads slippery. Traffic and tires can resuspend ash into the air, while ash drawn into a vehicle can clog filters, reduce engine performance, or contribute to stalling. CDC summarizes the risk plainly: “Driving in ash is hazardous to your health and your car.”

Check local road information before leaving. A road that appears open can become impassable because of poor visibility, abandoned vehicles, closures, or additional eruption hazards.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If travel is unavoidable

  1. Confirm that authorities have not closed the route and that the trip is genuinely necessary.
  2. Keep windows closed and turn off air conditioning during active ashfall so the system does not draw ash into the cabin.
  3. Drive slowly, use headlights as permitted, and leave a large gap behind the vehicle ahead.
  4. Expect sudden visibility changes, slippery surfaces, stalled traffic, and obscured signals.
  5. Avoid following closely behind other vehicles, which can create a dense ash cloud.
  6. If conditions deteriorate, stop only in a safe location away from traffic and follow official instructions.

Park under cover before ashfall when possible, but never enter an unsafe structure just to protect a vehicle. The official guidance covered here does not establish a universal post-ash car-washing or engine-cleaning procedure. For cleanup after exposure, consult the vehicle manufacturer and local authorities rather than using a generic method that could damage filters, paint, brakes, or electronics.

6. Treat roofs and outdoor cleanup as hazardous work

Accumulated ash adds weight to a roof and can contribute to collapse, especially when ash becomes wet. It also makes roof surfaces and ladders slippery. Roof access introduces fall, structural, electrical, and visibility hazards that are easy to underestimate under gray conditions.

Follow local emergency and building guidance about whether, when, and how roofs should be cleared. Do not present roof cleaning as routine do-it-yourself work. If officials direct removal, use qualified personnel and appropriate fall protection, and keep people out of areas where falling ash, debris, or structural failure is possible. Do not climb onto a roof that is visibly sagging, cracking, heavily loaded, or otherwise unstable.

7. Use a simple decision guide

Situation Best immediate action Reason
Active ashfall outside Stay indoors unless evacuation or another official instruction says to leave. Reduces inhalation and eye exposure while roads and visibility may be dangerous.
Ash entering through gaps Close openings, shut outside-air equipment, and seal large gaps with suitable materials. Limits new ash entry.
Settled ash on indoor surfaces Dampen and gently wipe it; avoid dry sweeping and standard vacuuming. Reduces resuspension of fine particles.
Necessary outdoor cleanup Wear a properly fitted NIOSH-approved N95 and limit time and exertion. Provides supported particulate protection when exposure cannot be avoided.
Road covered with ash Postpone travel if possible; otherwise follow road alerts, close windows, switch off air conditioning, slow down, and increase distance. Ash reduces traction and visibility and can harm vehicles.
Heavy roof accumulation Wait for official direction and use qualified help rather than taking an unsafe climb. Weight, slipperiness, and collapse risk make roof work dangerous.

8. Keep monitoring after the ash stops

Clear skies do not end the hazard. Wind and human activity can lift old ash again, roads can remain contaminated, and officials may issue later warnings about water, structural damage, or renewed eruptive activity. Keep following local alerts, clean high-use indoor areas with damp methods, and limit outdoor exertion until authorities indicate that conditions have returned to a safe level.
