If Valor Mortis stutters or crashes, work through a measured sequence rather than changing random graphics settings: compare your PC with the current Steam requirements, restart Windows and Steam, update Windows and your graphics driver, verify the installation, temporarily close non-essential background software, then check memory and cooling symptoms. These steps can identify common installation, software, and system conditions, but there is no confirmed universal Valor Mortis-specific fix.
Steam community posts describe stuttering and crashes in a pre-release discussion, and a developer account said fixes would be pushed. That historical reply does not identify a particular patch or prove that the same problem affects the current build. Treat your own reproducible symptoms and the live store page as the starting evidence.

First, establish what is actually failing
“Stuttering” and “crashing” can have different causes. A brief hitch every few seconds, a gradual slowdown after playing, a crash while loading, and a crash only when entering a particular area do not point to the same diagnostic path. Before changing anything, capture a baseline while the problem is easy to describe.
- Record your CPU model, graphics card model, installed RAM, Windows edition and version, and graphics-driver version.
- Note whether the game is installed on an SSD or a hard-disk drive, and how much free space remains on that drive.
- Write down the resolution, graphics preset, and any upscaling or frame-limit setting you use.
- Record exactly when the issue occurs: at launch, during loading, after a certain amount of play, in a specific location, or randomly.
- Copy the exact wording of any crash or Windows error message.
- Check whether other demanding games show similar behavior. A problem limited to Valor Mortis suggests a different investigation from a problem affecting several games.
This record prevents you from losing useful details while testing and gives support staff enough information to reproduce the situation.

Compare your PC with the current official requirements
The live Valor Mortis Steam listing labels its figures as demo specifications and says they may change for the final release. Check that page again whenever the game or demo is updated; the numbers below are a snapshot of what it lists, not a permanent guarantee.
| Component | Minimum (demo specification) | Recommended (demo specification) |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 11 | Windows 11 |
| Processor | AMD Ryzen 7 3700X or Intel Core i7-11700 | AMD Ryzen 7 7700 or Intel Core i7-13700 |
| Memory | 16 GB RAM | 16 GB RAM |
| Graphics | AMD Radeon RX 6700 or NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 Super | AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE or NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 |
| DirectX | DirectX 12 | DirectX 12 |
| Storage | 50 GB available space; SSD required | 50 GB available space; SSD required |
The listing uses the exact wording SSD is REQUIRED!
That is an installation requirement. It does not establish that replacing a drive will cure every crash or hitch, nor does it prove that a PC meeting the listed requirements will run without problems. Requirements can also change when the final version replaces the demo.
Follow this low-risk troubleshooting sequence
1. Restart Windows and Steam completely
Exit the game, quit Steam rather than leaving it minimized, and restart Windows. This clears a temporary driver or process state and ensures pending updates can finish. After rebooting, launch Steam, wait for it to settle, and test Valor Mortis before opening other applications.
2. Install Windows and graphics-driver updates
Run Windows Update and install available updates that your system is ready to receive. Then install the current graphics driver supplied by your GPU manufacturer or computer maker. Steam lists updating Windows and drivers among its general launch-failure steps in Games do not run after “Preparing to Launch”. Avoid third-party driver-utility programs; use the official support channel for your hardware.
Restart again after an update if Windows or the driver installer requests it. Test with the same resolution and preset you recorded, so you can tell whether the update changed the symptom rather than the test conditions.
3. Verify the Steam installation
Damaged or incomplete files can prevent a game from starting or cause a crash when a particular asset is loaded. Steam’s verification procedure is:

- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click Valor Mortis and choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files and let the scan finish.
- Restart Steam and run the game again.
Steam explains this process in Verify Integrity of Game Files. A small number of files can normally fail verification when they are local configuration files. Do not delete configuration files merely because that message appears; first retest and note whether the game actually redownloads content.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →4. Temporarily isolate background-software conflicts
Close non-essential overlays, recording software, hardware-tuning utilities, and other background applications, then test again. Steam recommends disabling non-essential software as part of launch troubleshooting. This is a reversible diagnostic step, not a recommendation to weaken your security.
Do not permanently disable antivirus protection or make broad security changes. If closing one application changes the behavior, re-enable your other programs and test one at a time until you identify the conflict. Record the application and its version so you can report a specific interaction instead of saying that “background apps” generally cause the problem.
Investigate memory, storage, and heat symptoms
Steam’s Troubleshooting Game Performance Issues — Hardware describes several general possibilities for slow or uneven frames. A game can hitch when available memory becomes low and the system repeatedly swaps data to storage. Overheating or restricted ventilation can also accompany performance trouble. These are avenues to check, not confirmed Valor Mortis diagnoses.
When memory pressure is plausible
Watch available memory while the game is running, especially if stutter worsens after opening browsers, launchers, recording tools, or other large applications. Close unnecessary programs and retest. The store listing names 16 GB RAM for both its minimum and recommended demo specifications, but that figure does not show how much memory your other software consumes.
When heat or airflow is plausible
If the game is smooth at first and becomes unstable after a period of play, inspect vents and fans for blockage, confirm that the system has adequate airflow, and observe whether other demanding games show the same pattern. Do not rely on an invented temperature limit: the correct range depends on the specific CPU, GPU, laptop design, and fan profile. Persistent overheating, sudden shutdowns, or fan failure warrants hardware servicing rather than registry edits.

When storage may be involved
Confirm that the game is installed on an SSD because the official listing marks an SSD as required. Keep at least the listed 50 GB available and allow additional headroom for the operating system and updates. If you need to buy or install a drive, check your PC’s supported interface, physical form factor, capacity limits, and installation procedure first. An SSD that is incompatible with the system, nearly full, or incorrectly installed is not a dependable remedy.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use the symptom pattern to choose the next check
| Observed pattern | Useful next check | What it can isolate |
|---|---|---|
| Game fails before reaching the menu | Restart, update Windows and the driver, verify files, then close non-essential software | Temporary launch state, outdated software, damaged installation, or an application conflict |
| Hitches occur at regular intervals during play | Check available memory, background applications, storage type, and whether other games hitch | Memory pressure, swapping, storage conditions, or a system-wide issue |
| Performance degrades after extended play | Check airflow and heat symptoms and compare with another demanding game | Thermal or cooling behavior rather than a one-time launch failure |
| Only this game crashes while other games are stable | Verify files, record the exact location or action that triggers the crash, and contact the developer if it persists | Game-specific content, build, or compatibility issue |
| Several games crash or stutter | Prioritize driver, Windows, memory, storage, and cooling checks | A broader system condition |
This table is a way to order tests, not a hardware diagnosis. A pattern can have more than one cause.
What not to change as a first response
Avoid speculative registry edits, BIOS changes, unofficial “optimizer” utilities, random launch commands, and permanent security exclusions. Such changes can create new problems, make support reproduction harder, and do not have an evidence-backed connection to a universal Valor Mortis fix. Change one reversible variable at a time and keep a note of what you changed.
Compare the diagnostic steps by risk and purpose
| Step | Risk and reversibility | Primary question it answers |
|---|---|---|
| Restart Windows and Steam | Very low risk; immediately reversible | Was the failure caused by a temporary process or driver state? |
| Update Windows and the graphics driver | Low risk when using the official provider; changes are manageable | Is the system missing a current software fix or compatibility update? |
| Verify Steam files | Low risk; Steam restores mismatched content | Is the installation incomplete or damaged? |
| Close non-essential software | Low risk and reversible; test applications individually | Does an overlay, recorder, tuner, or other program interfere? |
| Check memory and cooling | Observation first; hardware servicing may require expertise | Is the issue associated with swapping, sustained load, or heat? |
| Buy or replace hardware | Costly and not guaranteed to solve the symptom | Does the PC fail the posted requirement, particularly the SSD requirement? |
Because there is no measured Valor Mortis crash rate, stutter rate, or affected-hardware percentage established here, a purchase should not be the default response to a game that misbehaves.
When and how to contact support
If the sequence does not resolve the problem, contact the game’s official support channel. Steam’s launch guidance says that players should contact the developer when generic troubleshooting does not help. Include a compact, reproducible report:
- The game version or build shown by Steam.
- Windows version and graphics-driver version.
- CPU, GPU, RAM amount, and whether the game is on an SSD.
- Resolution, graphics preset, and any relevant in-game settings.
- The exact crash message, if one appears.
- The steps you already tried, including whether file verification found anything.
- Whether the issue reproduces consistently and the exact action or location that triggers it.
- Whether other demanding games show the same behavior.
That information lets the developer distinguish a reproducible game issue from a system-wide condition. Community reports can help you recognize similar symptoms, but the pre-release discussion at Fix the performance, it runs so bad on low and mid end PCs is not a current known-issue bulletin and does not establish that one patch fixes every PC.
