If UIDAI rejects a “Reporting of Death of a Family Member” request, keep the submission and rejection details, then ask UIDAI for the reason and the next step through its official grievance channels. A rejected report is not the same as a living person’s Aadhaar being wrongly marked as deceased; that second situation has a separate reactivation procedure.
First, identify which Aadhaar problem you have
UIDAI’s myAadhaar service is called “Reporting of Death of a Family Member.” It lets an authenticated family member submit the deceased person’s Aadhaar number, Death Registration Number and demographic details. UIDAI validates the information before taking further action. A submission therefore does not automatically deactivate the Aadhaar number.

UIDAI’s launch release describes the outcome this way: “After due process of validation of the information submitted by the family member, further action is taken for the deactivation, or otherwise, of the Aadhaar number of the deceased person.” The words “or otherwise” matter: a rejection or other non-deactivation outcome can mean that UIDAI needs clarification, cannot validate the supplied details, or has decided not to proceed on the information received. The rejection message itself should be your starting evidence.
| Situation | Correct route | What UIDAI publishes |
|---|---|---|
| A family member reported a death and the request was rejected or produced no expected action | Ask UIDAI through its grievance channels for the reason, the missing or inconsistent information, and whether the request can be reviewed | UIDAI lists grievance routes, but the official material does not establish a separate rejection-only appeal form or a guaranteed reversal |
| The Aadhaar holder is alive but was wrongly recorded as deceased or deactivated | Use the reactivation procedure in UIDAI Circular 02/2025 | The living holder submits the prescribed application to the nearest Regional or State Office and may be called for full biometrics |
Do not send a reactivation application for a person who has actually died. Do not ask a grievance operator to “reactivate” a deceased person’s Aadhaar when your real issue is a rejected death report. State the facts precisely so the case reaches the right process.

What to preserve before contacting UIDAI
Save the myAadhaar submission information before trying again or closing the browser. Keep copies of the rejection screen, email or SMS, and any reference number. If the portal showed a status or error code, record it exactly, including capitalization and punctuation.
- The Aadhaar number of the deceased person, handled according to UIDAI’s privacy guidance.
- The Death Registration Number used in the report.
- The demographic details entered in the form.
- The date and approximate time of submission.
- The reporting family member’s authentication or submission reference.
- Any rejection message, screenshot, acknowledgement, or service request number.
- A clear explanation of what you expected and what actually happened.
Keep the original death-registration record available in case UIDAI asks you to confirm the number or resolve a mismatch. Do not email more personal information than UIDAI requests, and do not post Aadhaar or death-certificate details publicly on social media.
Ask UIDAI for the reason and next step
UIDAI’s FAQ says that a person whose Aadhaar is deactivated may raise a complaint through the myAadhaar grievance portal using an EID, URN or SRN, or contact 1947 or [email protected]. For a rejected family-member death report, use the same official channels and explain that the complaint concerns a submission under “Reporting of Death of a Family Member.” Include whichever submission or complaint reference you have; if you have none, provide the submission date and the identifying details the channel requests.
Use the myAadhaar grievance portal
- Open the official myAadhaar site and choose its grievance or complaint option.
- Enter the EID, URN or SRN when the form asks for one. Use the identifier shown on your acknowledgement or earlier complaint.
- Describe the rejected death report, rather than describing the matter only as “Aadhaar deactivation.” State that the Aadhaar holder is deceased, identify the death report as a family-member submission, and quote the rejection wording.
- Ask two specific questions: why validation failed or the request was rejected, and what correction or additional evidence is required for review.
- Submit the complaint and save the generated acknowledgement or reference for follow-up.
If the portal does not accept the identifier you have, do not guess another number. Record the validation error and use 1947 or email instead, mentioning that the portal would not accept the available reference.

Call 1947
UIDAI’s contact centre uses the number 1947. The grievance page states that an executive is available Monday through Saturday from 7 AM to 11 PM and Sunday from 8 AM to 5 PM; its IVRS is available 24/7. Contact details and hours can change, so verify the current information on UIDAI’s grievance page before relying on a particular schedule.
Have the submission reference and rejection wording in front of you. Ask the executive to record the issue as a rejected “Reporting of Death of a Family Member” request and to tell you how the complaint will be tracked. Write down the date, the interaction or complaint number, and any document or correction the executive identifies. A phone explanation is useful, but a written reference gives you something to attach to a later escalation.
Email [email protected]
In the email subject, identify the service and the problem, for example: “Rejected Reporting of Death of a Family Member request.” In the message, provide the reporting family member’s contact details, submission date, reference number, the State or Union Territory concerned, and the exact rejection text. Ask UIDAI to explain the reason and the correct next step. Attach only documents or screenshots that UIDAI’s instructions require, and redact unnecessary Aadhaar digits when a full number is not needed for identification.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteEscalate if the first contact does not resolve it
UIDAI’s grievance-redressal information lists several additional routes: Regional Offices, post or letter, social media and CPGRAMS, along with the phone, email and web options. UIDAI says complaints are assigned to the relevant division or Regional Office for examination and communication.

- Regional or State Office: Ask which office has jurisdiction for the Aadhaar holder’s address or the service request. Use the office’s published submission instructions rather than sending documents to an unverified address.
- Post or letter: Send a concise written complaint with copies, not irreplaceable originals, and keep proof of dispatch.
- Social media: Use only UIDAI’s verified account and never publish Aadhaar numbers, death-registration numbers, certificates or other personal records in a public post. Ask for a private channel and quote your existing complaint reference.
- CPGRAMS: If the matter remains unresolved through UIDAI’s initial handling, file a grievance through the government’s CPGRAMS route and include the UIDAI complaint reference and the response already received.
Escalation is a request for examination, not a promise that the rejected report will be approved. Keep every acknowledgement and response together so the next office can see the complete history instead of receiving separate, inconsistent accounts.
What to write in a review request
A useful complaint is chronological and specific. It does not accuse an operator of wrongdoing without evidence, and it does not present a living-person reactivation claim when the holder has died.
- Identify yourself as the family member who authenticated and submitted the report.
- Name the service exactly: “Reporting of Death of a Family Member” on myAadhaar.
- Give the deceased person’s Aadhaar reference in the secure format requested by UIDAI, the Death Registration Number, State or Union Territory, and date of death if the channel asks for them.
- State the submission date, acknowledgement or complaint reference, and the exact rejection or status message.
- Explain any apparent mismatch, such as a spelling difference or a number entered incorrectly, without guessing which field caused the failure.
- Request the reason for rejection, the correction or evidence required, and confirmation of the proper route for resubmission or review.
You can adapt this wording for a portal complaint or letter:

Check service availability for the relevant State or Union Territory
UIDAI announced the service on 9 June 2025 for deaths registered in 24 States and Union Territories using the Civil Registration System, with integration for the remaining States underway at launch. That announcement is a launch status, not a current coverage list. Availability may differ for the State or Union Territory where the death was registered.
Before attempting a new submission, check what myAadhaar currently offers for the relevant jurisdiction or ask UIDAI whether the service is available there. If the death registration system is not integrated, explain that fact in your complaint and ask which official process applies. Do not infer that a rejection proves the death record is invalid; it may indicate that the service is unavailable or that the supplied data could not be matched.
Do not apply the 30-day rule to a rejected death report
UIDAI’s published 30-day timeline belongs to a different case. Circular 02/2025, dated 7 July 2025, covers a living Aadhaar holder who was wrongly reported as deceased. Under that procedure, the holder sends the prescribed reactivation application to the nearest Regional or State Office by post, email or in person. The office examines the case and may call the holder for full biometrics at a designated Aadhaar centre. UIDAI says the office communicates the disposal status within 30 days after the biometric information is submitted.

That 30-day period is not a deadline for UIDAI to decide a family member’s rejected death report, and it is not a guaranteed response time for a grievance about that report. The official material reviewed does not state a rejection-specific appeal deadline or a guaranteed reversal process. Ask for the applicable status and next step instead of promising yourself that the outcome will change within 30 days.
Best Value
If the Aadhaar holder is alive
Stop treating the matter as a death-report dispute if the person is alive. A wrongly deactivated living person needs the reactivation route, not a family-member death-report review.
- Obtain the prescribed reactivation application described in UIDAI Circular 02/2025.
- Send it to the nearest Regional or State Office by the permitted method: post, email or in-person submission.
- Follow the office’s instructions if it requires the holder to appear at a designated Aadhaar centre for full biometrics.
- After biometric submission, note the date and retain the acknowledgement; UIDAI states that the office will communicate the disposal status within 30 days of that submission.
If a family member accidentally reported a living person as deceased, say so immediately in every contact and provide the living holder’s consent and participation where required. Do not submit a second death report to “correct” the first one.
Common mistakes that delay a resolution
- Calling it an appeal: UIDAI’s material does not establish a dedicated appeal form for a rejected family death report. Ask for grievance review and the reason for the outcome.
- Using the wrong identifier: EID, URN and SRN are different reference types. Use the one associated with your acknowledgement or complaint.
- Submitting repeatedly without the rejection details: Multiple attempts can create a confusing history. Preserve the first response and ask what must change before resubmitting.
- Posting documents publicly: Social-media posts should never contain Aadhaar numbers, death-registration numbers or certificates. Move the conversation to a private official channel.
- Assuming launch coverage is universal: The June 2025 announcement covered 24 States and Union Territories at launch, with the rest still being integrated then. Verify current availability.
- Using the living-person process for a deceased holder: Reactivation is for a person who is alive and wrongly marked deceased. It is not a substitute for reviewing a rejected death report.
What outcome to expect
The immediate objective is a documented explanation: whether the problem was a data mismatch, unavailable integration, missing information or another validation issue, and what official step follows. UIDAI may direct you to correct information, provide additional evidence, contact a Regional Office or wait for examination by the relevant division.
Keep the case reference until UIDAI communicates the final status. If the answer does not address the rejection, reply through the same channel with the unanswered question and the existing reference, then use a listed escalation route such as the relevant Regional Office or CPGRAMS. The evidence supports requesting review; it does not support promising that every rejected request will be reversed.
