Have a passenger check, or pull completely off the road in a safe place before using your phone. Follow police and road-crew directions, do not take an unverified app detour, and prepare to wait. If winter weather or a breakdown could make the wait long, stay with the vehicle when that is safer, use your emergency supplies, and clear snow from the exhaust before running the engine for heat. Once you are within McCall, check city travel alerts and current Mountain Community Transit schedules; local buses are not a guaranteed highway rescue service.
Start with the right information source
Idaho 511 is the official starting point for conditions on Idaho interstates, U.S. routes and state highways. Its continual updates can include weather-related road conditions, roadwork, commercial-vehicle restrictions, closures and other travel information. The service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, through its website, app or telephone system.

The City of McCall Police Department’s March 4, 2025 travel notice directs drivers to Idaho 511 for closures, construction, possible delays and some road conditions. That makes 511 the appropriate first check for the highway portion of your trip, but it is not a complete map of every road. The Idaho 511 FAQ says county roads and city streets are generally outside its coverage, except where a specified metropolitan partnership provides information. A delay on a McCall street therefore may require a separate city check.
Before leaving for McCall
Check the complete highway route
Open Idaho 511 before departure and examine the route you actually plan to drive. Look for closures, restrictions, roadwork, weather-related warnings, incidents and any available cameras or other road data. Conditions can change after you leave, so a pre-trip check is a decision point, not a guarantee that the road will remain open.

Prepare for a wait, not just a drive
The Idaho Transportation Department’s Idaho Driver’s Handbook, July 2025, advises winter travelers to be prepared in case the vehicle breaks down or a crash occurs. Pack the items the handbook identifies as an emergency winter-driving kit:
- Flashlight with extra batteries
- First-aid kit
- Pocket knife
- Blanket or sleeping bag
- Gloves, socks and a wool cap
- Small sack of sand or cat litter for traction
- Small shovel
- Bottled water and nonperishable food
- Booster cables
- Emergency flares
- Brightly colored scarf
- Waterproof matches or a lighter
- Area map
- Phone charger
Keep warm clothing and the kit inside the passenger compartment where you can reach them without unloading the vehicle in traffic. A phone with a charger is useful, but do not rely on cellular service alone: Idaho 511 notes that reception can be poor in some areas.

Before moving
Do not read or operate a phone while driving. Idaho 511’s FAQ recommends checking before departure, asking a passenger to check, or stopping in a safe location before using the phone. Pulling onto an unsafe shoulder or looking down at a screen in a moving vehicle can turn a delay into a collision.

When 511 does not connect
Dial 511 for the normal telephone service. If your phone company does not support 511, the FAQ lists 1-888-IDA-ROAD (1-888-432-7623) as an alternative. Normal airtime, roaming and data limits may apply. If neither number connects, wait until you have a safe connection or ask a passenger to try; do not handle the phone while driving.
What to do when traffic has stopped
Follow the people managing the scene
Obey directions from law enforcement, transportation workers and road crews. Leave access for emergency vehicles and do not drive around barricades, cones or a queue simply because a navigation app proposes another path. A stopped line may be controlled for a crash, avalanche risk, flooding, active roadwork or a restriction that an ordinary routing app has not yet incorporated.
Recheck before choosing a detour
There is no single documented alternate route that can be recommended for every approach to McCall. Before turning away from the planned highway, verify all of these points with current official information:
- Whether the original route is officially closed or merely slow
- Whether the proposed alternate is open now
- Current weather and road-surface conditions on the alternate
- Whether it is a state highway, county road or city street
- Whether the road is suitable for your vehicle, tires and fuel range
- Whether the detour’s expected delay is actually reported, rather than guessed by an app
Remember that a county road or city street may not appear in Idaho 511’s normal coverage. Absence of a warning is not proof that a local road is clear.

Stay with the queue unless officials direct otherwise
If traffic is moving intermittently, remain in the controlled line and keep enough space to stop. Avoid blocking opposing traffic, driveways or shoulders that emergency responders may need. If officials direct vehicles to turn around or use a specific route, follow that instruction even when it differs from your planned navigation.
If winter conditions or a breakdown extend the wait
Protect warmth and visibility
The handbook’s warning is direct: “When traveling in winter months, be prepared in case your vehicle breaks down or you get into a crash.” Use the blanket, sleeping bag, gloves, hat, food and water in your kit rather than exposing yourself to wind or snow unnecessarily. If it is safe to do so, make the vehicle easier for responders to see with the brightly colored scarf or emergency flares listed in the kit. Do not step into live traffic to improve visibility.
Clear the exhaust before running the engine
If you run the vehicle for heat, first inspect the exhaust pipe and clear away snow. The July 2025 Idaho Driver’s Handbook states: “If you run your car for heat, make sure your exhaust pipe is clear of snow.” Snow blocking the exhaust can allow dangerous fumes to build up around or inside the vehicle. Recheck the pipe after additional snowfall or after the vehicle shifts position.

Use traction equipment only when it is safe
Sand or cat litter and a small shovel can help with traction if the vehicle is safely stopped and officials permit movement. They do not make a closed road passable and should not be a reason to leave a managed traffic line or drive onto an unverified shoulder. Booster cables, a flashlight and a phone charger are preparation items, not substitutes for emergency assistance when there is immediate danger.

Get appropriate emergency help
If anyone is injured, the vehicle is in an unsafe position, or weather creates an immediate threat, contact emergency services when you can do so safely and follow the dispatcher’s instructions. The available official guidance does not define one universal breakdown response for every location, so do not assume that a particular roadside service, tow operator or shelter will be available. Tell responders your direction of travel, the road you are on and any visible landmark if you can provide that information safely.
Separate highway delays from McCall street problems
Once you reach the McCall area, consult the City of McCall for local construction, street closures and travel alerts in addition to Idaho 511. The city’s Travel Wise information describes local alerts and TextMyGov notifications for road closures and weather impacts. These notices address conditions on city streets that may not be represented in the state highway system.
A city closure can affect the final blocks of a trip even when the highway into town is open. Conversely, a clear city-street notice does not mean the highway approach is passable. Check the source that covers the road segment you need.
Can Mountain Community Transit get you out?
Mountain Community Transit provides local and regional bus service in the McCall area. The city’s Travel Wise page identifies Red, Green, Blue and Gold lines and directs riders to check current schedules and route information. Service details are time-sensitive, so verify the schedule for the date, stop and direction you need.

Do not leave a stranded vehicle or walk along a highway assuming a bus will arrive. Treat transit as a possible option after you are within the served area and have confirmed that a route is operating.
| Situation | Best information channel | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Interstate, U.S. route or state highway delay | Idaho 511 website, app or 511 phone service | County roads and city streets are generally outside normal coverage. |
| McCall street closure, local construction or weather alert | City of McCall travel information and alerts, including TextMyGov where available | Local notices do not replace a highway check. |
| Bus trip within the served area | Current Mountain Community Transit route and schedule information | Service is not identified as highway rescue or emergency transport. |
Winter-driving choices while you wait
Idaho Transportation Department winter-driving guidance says to slow down, leave plenty of room, avoid cruise control on icy roads and give snowplows room because plows have large blind spots. Apply those points when traffic begins moving again. A queue that starts crawling can still contain ice, packed snow, poor visibility or a plow operating nearby.
- Wait for an official indication that movement is allowed. Do not infer that a shoulder or closed lane is open because another vehicle uses it.
- Increase following distance. Leave more room than you would on dry pavement and brake gently.
- Do not use cruise control on icy roads. Maintain direct control of speed and traction.
- Give snowplows space. Their large blind spots mean the operator may not see a vehicle close behind or beside the plow.
- Recheck conditions after the queue clears. A reopened segment can still be hazardous, and the next segment may have a separate restriction.

- Verify any proposed detour’s closure status, surface conditions, suitability and actual availability before turning.
- If the wait may be prolonged, use the winter kit and keep warm clothing, water and food accessible.
- Before running the engine for heat, clear snow from the exhaust pipe.
- If there is immediate danger, contact emergency services safely and provide your location.
- After entering McCall, check city alerts for local streets and confirm Mountain Community Transit schedules before relying on a bus.
What current information cannot tell you in advance
Official services can report changing conditions, but they cannot guarantee a particular delay length, route opening time or alternate path for every departure. The safest plan is therefore conditional: check immediately before leaving, recheck when stopped safely, and let current official instructions—not a guessed timetable or an unverified navigation suggestion—determine whether you continue, wait or turn around.
