If someone is using an AI-made copy of your voice or face, save evidence, report the content to the platform, and verify any requests for money or information through a contact method you already trust. If the content is an intimate image shared without consent, a separate U.S. removal process may apply; it does not cover every voice clone or deepfake.
First, identify what the imitation is being used for
The response depends on the content and the harm involved. An imitation might be an ordinary fake post, a request for money made in someone else’s name, a threat, or a nonconsensual intimate image. The FBI uses “deepfake” broadly for AI- or machine-learning-generated or manipulated digital media, including audio and video, so the label alone does not determine what action is available.

Save evidence before it disappears
Keep a record of where and when you found the material. Posts can be deleted or accounts renamed, so capture identifying details before reporting if it is safe to do so. The FBI advises retaining information in photo- or video-manipulation and sextortion incidents.

- Keep relevant emails, phone numbers, messages, threats, and any request for money or sensitive information.
- Where practical, retain an untouched copy of the material and note where it came from. Do not circulate intimate material further just to document it.
The FBI’s June 2023 IC3 alert provides guidance on preserving information in these incidents.

Report the imitation to the platform
Use the service’s current reporting workflow for impersonation, privacy violations, or manipulated media. Form names and rules vary, so follow the options available on the platform where the content appears. Include the URL and relevant account details, explain how the material is being used, and save the report confirmation or case number.
A report is not a guarantee that ordinary impersonation content will be removed, and the sources cited here do not establish one removal deadline across services. If the same material appears in more than one place, report each instance separately and keep a record of those reports.

If the imitation is being used to scam people
Do not treat a familiar-sounding voice or convincing face as proof that a request is genuine. The FBI warned on May 15, 2025, that AI-generated voice messages had been used in impersonation campaigns and recommends verifying suspicious requests independently through a previously confirmed channel.
- Contact the person using a phone number or account you already know is authentic—not a new number or link supplied in the suspicious message.
- If the fake targets family, coworkers, customers, or other contacts, warn likely targets through a trusted channel and tell them how to verify requests.
- If you have evidence that one of your accounts was accessed, change its compromised credentials and secure it. An imitation by itself does not establish that your account was hacked.

If the content is an intimate image shared without consent in the United States
Report the image to the platform and use its process for nonconsensual intimate imagery. For qualifying content on covered platforms, the platform must remove the content and known identical copies within 48 hours of a valid request. That rule is limited to qualifying intimate imagery and covered platforms; it does not promise removal of every fake voice, ordinary manipulated video, or other impersonation.
If a platform fails to meet the requirement, the FTC says the failure can be reported to it. Its image-based abuse guidance explains what to know and do.

Consider StopNCII for eligible intimate images
The FTC also points to StopNCII.org. It creates a digital fingerprint of an image and shares the fingerprint—not the image—with participating platforms to help them identify matching content. It only works with participating services; it is not a general-purpose detector for voice clones, impersonation, or all deepfakes.

If the imitation involves threats, blackmail, stalking, financial loss, or another suspected crime, report it to local law enforcement. For relevant cyber-enabled incidents in the United States, the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) is another reporting route identified in its guidance. Keep your evidence and platform case details available when making a report.

If a minor is involved in sexual exploitation, use the appropriate specialist reporting route; the FBI IC3 alert points to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) in cases involving minors. Do not redistribute intimate material to seek help or prove what happened.
Legal options depend on the use and where you live
There is no single legal rule that automatically covers every AI imitation worldwide. Options can depend on whether the replica is being used for fraud, intimate imagery, commercial exploitation, defamation, a privacy violation, or another legal issue, as well as the jurisdiction. The U.S. Copyright Office’s 2024 report on digital replicas is a policy resource, not individualized legal advice. For advice about your situation, consult a qualified lawyer or a relevant local support organization.
