If a threat suggests someone may hurt you soon, get somewhere safe and call your local emergency number. If there is no immediate danger, save the message and account details if you can, report the player through the game or platform, then mute or block them. Tell someone you trust; contact local police if the threat raises a real-world safety concern. You do not need screenshots before asking for help.
First, decide whether you are in immediate danger
Take a threat seriously if the person says they are coming to your location, shares details that suggest they know where you are, or otherwise appears able to harm you soon. Stop interacting, move to a safer place, and contact the emergency service for your location. The FBI’s U.S. guidance says to call 911 in immediate physical danger; in the UK, Police.uk directs people to call 999 for emergencies such as immediate danger to life or threatened violence. Those numbers are jurisdiction-specific: use your local emergency number.

Do not keep messaging the player to test whether they mean it, and do not try to find or confront them. If the danger is not immediate but still concerns you, contact local police through a non-emergency route or ask a trusted person to help you decide what to do.

Save what you can, but do not wait to report
If it is safe and quick, preserve the message, chat, voice note, or other communication before it disappears. Keep the original content where possible and note:

- The exact words used.
- The player’s displayed name, username, and user ID, if visible.
- The game and platform where it happened.
- The date and time, including your time zone if relevant.
- Any related profile, message, or recording details.
The FBI advises people not to delete electronic threat messages and to preserve electronic evidence. Police.uk, however, says evidence is not required before making a report. Both points can be followed: retain what is available, but do not postpone a report or a request for help because you lack a screenshot or recording.
Limit further contact
Use the game or platform’s mute, ignore, block, and privacy controls to stop or reduce contact. If you can preserve the relevant content first without delaying help, do so; some services may make a conversation harder to access after blocking. The Australian eSafety Commissioner’s gaming guidance recommends collecting evidence and then reporting and blocking abusive players. The available controls and their order vary by service.

Reporting and blocking serve different purposes: a report alerts the service to conduct that may violate its rules, while muting or blocking limits contact with you. You can use both.
Report the player on the game or platform
Look for a report option in the game, or use the reporting tools for the connected console, store, or platform. Include the account identifier, when the incident happened, and the message or recording if the form accepts attachments. Save any confirmation or reference number. The menu path depends on the product: for example, Rockstar’s support instructions describe reporting in GTA Online on PC, not a universal route for other games.

In Australia, the eSafety adult cyber abuse scheme generally expects a person to report the content to the platform first. That is a jurisdiction-specific process, not a universal rule for contacting police. If you believe someone is in danger, seek urgent help rather than waiting for a platform response.
When to contact police
Contact local law enforcement if the threat is specific or persistent, refers to a real-world location or identity, suggests planned violence, or otherwise makes you concerned for someone’s safety. A threat in game chat is not automatically a crime, and whether a particular message meets a legal threshold depends on the facts and local law.

Reporting routes differ by country. In the United States, the FBI advises contacting a local field office or submitting a tip at tips.fbi.gov for threats associated with federal crimes; threats outside that scope may need to be reported to local police. In the UK, Police.uk provides routes for reporting threatening messages. Use the appropriate local authority for your location and circumstances.
Tell someone you trust
You do not have to manage a frightening or upsetting threat alone. Tell a trusted friend, family member, adult, or support professional. They can help you preserve details, report the account, and decide whether further help is needed. If the player is young, involve a trusted adult. The Australian eSafety Commissioner also points young people to support services such as Kids Helpline.
If the threat includes personal information or account access
If the player reveals your address, location, or other personal details, preserve the messages and account identifiers, review your privacy and security settings, and seek help from the platform and appropriate authorities if your safety may be at risk. If you think an account has been accessed without permission, use the service’s account-security or recovery process. A privacy setting can reduce exposure, but it cannot guarantee that information already shared or obtained elsewhere will be removed.
