What to Do if Someone Threatens to Leak Intimate Images

By Freedom251 Team · · 9 min read

Do not pay, send more images, or give the person access to your accounts or devices. End the conversation, block the account, report the threat to local law enforcement and the FBI, and tell someone you trust. A threat to share an intimate image without permission is image-based abuse even when nothing has been posted yet.

If the person depicted was under 18 when the image was made, report the case to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) through its CyberTipline as well as to law enforcement. If an image is already online, report the specific post to the platform immediately.

Take these steps first

Fear and urgency are exactly what a blackmailer uses to keep you responding. You do not have to keep negotiating in order to qualify for help. Work through this sequence instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Refuse the demands. Do not pay, send additional images, share passwords or verification codes, provide financial-account access, or let the person access your phone or computer. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says there is no reliable promise that compliance will stop the threats.
  2. Stop communicating and block the account. Do not argue, threaten back, or bargain for more time. After you have recorded the basic account name and messages needed for a report, use the service’s block and report controls. If responding could put you in danger, leave the conversation immediately.
  3. Report the threat. In the United States, report to local criminal law enforcement and submit a tip to the FBI at tips.fbi.gov or by calling 1-800-CALL-FBI. Explain that someone threatened to distribute an intimate image without your permission, whether or not the image has appeared online.
  4. Use the child-safety route when applicable. If the person shown was under 18 when the image or video was made, report through NCMEC’s CyberTipline. NCMEC analysts can route reports to the appropriate law-enforcement agency. Do not use an adult-only service as a substitute for this report.
  5. Tell a safe person. Ask a trusted friend, relative, counselor, advocate, or colleague to sit with you while you make reports. Having another person help can reduce pressure to respond to the blackmailer and can make it easier to keep track of next steps.
  6. If anything is posted, report the exact post to the platform. Use the service’s intimate-image or non-consensual-image reporting path, not only a general complaint about harassment. Platform procedures differ, so follow the instructions shown by the service.

If you believe the person threatening you may hurt you in person, is monitoring your devices, or is a current or former partner, prioritize physical safety. Use a safer device or location to seek help and contact emergency services if you face immediate danger.

Why a threat is serious even before publication

The FTC defines image-based abuse to include sharing, as well as threatening to share, an intimate photo or video without the depicted person’s permission. That means you can report the conduct before an image appears on a website or social feed. You do not need to wait for a post, a payment demand, or a second threat.

The FTC’s May 2026 consumer guidance states the blackmail response plainly: “Ignore their demands. Don’t pay them. Don’t give them access to your financial accounts. Don’t send them any images. Don’t give them access to your devices.” It separately advises cutting off contact, blocking the person, and ignoring further messages.

A threat can arrive through direct messages, email, dating or gaming services, cloud-storage links, or an account pretending to know you. The channel does not change the basic response. Keep the report focused on what was threatened, the account or phone number used, dates and times, and whether the person claimed to have sent anything to others.

If the image is already online

Report the hosted copy first

Open the specific post, profile, message, or page that contains the image and use the platform’s intimate-image removal or privacy-reporting process. The FTC says only the service hosting the material can take it down from that service. A law-enforcement report and a hash-based tool are important, but neither directly removes a post from a platform’s servers.

What the United States 48-hour rule covers

Under the Take It Down Act, covered platforms in the United States must provide a way to request removal of qualifying intimate images and must remove the image, including digitally altered images and deepfakes, plus known identical copies, within 48 hours after a request. This is a US requirement for covered platforms; it is not a promise that every website, private message, search result, or service worldwide will remove material within that period.

If a covered platform has no working request process, the process fails, or the image remains after 48 hours, report the platform to the FTC at TakeItDown.ftc.gov. Include the platform, the location of the post, the date of your request, and any confirmation number. Do not upload or forward the intimate material to an unverified person offering to “remove” it.

Know what removal cannot guarantee

A platform request addresses content hosted by that platform. It cannot guarantee that a threatener will not send a file privately, that another site will remove a copy, or that every copy elsewhere on the internet will disappear. Continue documenting new locations and report each hosted copy through the relevant service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Free hash-based tools: which one fits?

Hash-based services create a digital fingerprint of an image on your device. Participating platforms can use that fingerprint to detect or block matching uploads without receiving the original image. These tools are preventive or detection aids, not universal deletion systems, and they do not replace a police, FBI, CyberTipline, or platform report.

Service Who it is for Eligibility and process What it can and cannot do
StopNCII Adults depicted in eligible images You must currently be at least 18, have been at least 18 when the image was made, still possess the image, and the image must show nudity, partial nudity, or a sexual act. The hash is created on your device; the image itself is not uploaded. Shares the hash with participating companies to help detect or block matching content. It does not cover every website and does not guarantee removal of every copy.
NCMEC Take It Down Images or videos made when the person depicted was under 18 The service hashes eligible nude, partially nude, or sexually explicit material on the device and shares only the hash with participating platforms. Use it alongside a CyberTipline report for a minor’s case. Helps participating platforms detect matching material. It is not a universal deletion service and does not replace reporting to law enforcement or the platform hosting a post.

Use the adult service only when its age rules fit

StopNCII’s adult eligibility is based on the person’s age both now and when the image was created. If the image was made while that person was under 18, use NCMEC’s Take It Down route instead, even if the person is an adult today. If you no longer have the original file, a hash tool may not be usable; platform reporting and law-enforcement support remain available.

Do not treat a hash as a guarantee

A hash can help participating companies identify an identical or matching file, but it cannot reach services that do not participate. Cropping, editing, screenshots, re-encoding, or a completely different copy may affect detection. The tool also cannot stop a person from making a private transfer. Keep using direct platform reporting for material that is already hosted.

Choose the right reporting route

Your situation Primary action Additional action
A threat was made, but nothing is known to be posted Stop contact, block the person, and report to local law enforcement and the FBI. Tell a trusted person; use StopNCII or Take It Down only if you meet the relevant eligibility rules and still have the image.
An image is posted on a US platform covered by the Take It Down Act Use that platform’s intimate-image removal process and keep the request confirmation. If there is no functioning process or removal has not occurred after 48 hours, report the platform at TakeItDown.ftc.gov.
The image was made when the depicted person was under 18 Report to law enforcement and NCMEC’s CyberTipline. Use NCMEC Take It Down if the material and device meet its criteria; report every hosted copy to the platform.
You need emotional or safety support Contact a trusted person or a qualified advocate. The National Domestic Violence Hotline can help even when the threat is part of a broader pattern of control.

Protect your accounts and devices after blocking

The FTC specifically warns against giving a threatener access to financial accounts or devices. After you end contact, review account security from a device the person cannot control.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Change the password for the account used to contact you and for any account that reused that password.
  • Turn on multi-factor authentication and review recovery email addresses, phone numbers, active sessions, and connected apps.
  • Sign out of unknown devices and revoke unfamiliar app or cloud-storage access.
  • Check whether shared albums, links, backups, or location-sharing settings expose the image or your whereabouts.
  • Do not open files, remote-support requests, or login links sent by the threatener after you block them.

If the threatener claims to have taken over your device, do not hand over remote access to “prove” it. Ask a trusted technician, advocate, or law-enforcement contact for help using a safer device.

Support when the threat involves a partner or personal safety

Image-based abuse can be part of stalking, coercion, or domestic violence. The National Domestic Violence Hotline lists phone support at 1-800-799-SAFE (7233), live chat at thehotline.org, and text support by sending “START” to 88788. If the person threatening you can see your browser history or phone bill, contact the hotline from a safer device and ask about technology-safety planning.

NCMEC lists help at 1-800-THE-LOST (1-800-843-5678), missingkids.org/gethelpnow/support, and [email protected]. These contacts are especially relevant when the image was made while the person depicted was under 18.

Common mistakes that can make the situation worse

  • Paying for silence: payment may create new demands and does not provide a reliable stop to distribution.
  • Sending one “final” image: an additional file gives the threatener more material and does not establish control over what happens next.
  • Negotiating for hours: continued contact increases pressure and can expose account or schedule information.
  • Using an adult tool for a minor’s image: age-at-creation rules matter; use NCMEC’s route when the person was under 18.
  • Assuming a hash removes existing posts: hash services work with participating companies and cannot directly delete every hosted copy.
  • Reporting only the person, not the post: when content is online, submit the platform’s specific intimate-image removal request as well as a law-enforcement report.
  • Forwarding the image widely as “proof”: share only the information necessary with legitimate authorities or the platform’s reporting system.

What to expect from each option

Law enforcement and the FBI handle reports about the threatener and can determine which agency has jurisdiction. A platform request handles content hosted by that platform. StopNCII and Take It Down provide hash matching for participating companies when their eligibility rules are met. A hotline, counselor, or trusted person provides practical and emotional support. Because these functions are different, using one route does not make the others unnecessary.

US limits and help outside the United States

The reporting instructions and 48-hour removal statement above are based on FTC guidance and US federal law, including the Take It Down Act. They should not be read as a description of penalties, civil remedies, or platform deadlines in another country. If you are outside the United States, contact your local police or cybercrime unit, the platform hosting the material, and a reputable local victim-support organization. Use the same immediate safety principles: do not pay or send more material, stop contact, block the account, and seek help from someone you trust.

Official guidance used for these steps

The FTC’s “Image-Based Abuse: What To Know and Do” (May 2026) and its September 10, 2026 guidance on intimate images explain the reporting, blocking, and platform-removal steps. NCMEC’s “Take It Down: How It Works” handout was updated May 3, 2023. StopNCII describes its current adult eligibility and on-device hashing requirements. Contact details and platform procedures can change, so verify them when you report.
