What to Do If Someone Is Threatening to Share Your Intimate Images

By Freedom251 Team · · 9 min read

Stop responding, do not pay or send more images, preserve the threat if you can do so safely, then block and report the account. Tell someone you trust and consider reporting to local law enforcement or the FBI. If the image was made when the person shown was under 18, report it to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) as well.

A threat to share an intimate image without permission is abuse even when nothing has been posted. The image may be genuine, altered, or a deepfake, and the person making the threat—not the person depicted—is responsible.

What to do in the next few minutes

  1. End the negotiation. Do not pay, send another image, provide passwords, give access to a phone or account, or follow instructions intended to keep you engaged. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) advises cutting off communication and ignoring demands.
  2. Preserve useful evidence without putting yourself at risk. Save the threatening messages, the sender’s username, profile URL, phone number, email address, payment instructions, and visible dates or times. Screenshots can help, but do not continue talking just to collect more. If saving material would expose you to danger, leave it and seek help first.
  3. Report and block the account. Use the service’s safety or non-consensual-intimate-image reporting path, then block the sender. Reporting can help the platform act even when a threat by itself may not meet the legal definition of a crime.
  4. Tell one safe person now. Choose a friend, relative, counselor, trusted adult, advocate, or law-enforcement contact who can stay with you while you report. Isolation makes extortion easier; support gives you a second person to check links, records, and decisions.
  5. Report the conduct. In the United States, you can contact local law enforcement or submit a tip to the FBI at tips.fbi.gov or 1-800-CALL-FBI. If the depicted person was under 18 when the image was made, use NCMEC’s CyberTipline as an additional route.

If you face immediate physical danger, move to a safer place and contact local emergency services. Do not meet the person who is threatening you to “resolve” the situation.

Why a threat counts as image-based abuse

Sharing, or threatening to share, a nude or sexually explicit image without the depicted person’s permission is commonly described as image-based abuse. The conduct can involve a real photograph, an edited picture, or a synthetic deepfake. It affects adults and minors, and the threat itself can be used to control, intimidate, or extort someone before any file appears online.

RAINN describes a threat of sexual exploitation as sexual coercion or “sextortion.” A person can be a victim even if they originally took the image voluntarily or sent it privately. Consent to create or send an image is not consent for someone else to publish it.

Do not blame yourself for trusting someone, for having the image, or for being deceived. RAINN notes that discovering a threat or posted image can bring shame, anger, fear, and embarrassment; those reactions are understandable, but responsibility remains with the person using or distributing the image.

How to preserve evidence safely

Record the account, not just the words

Law enforcement may need information that links the threat to a person or service. Keep the profile name, account identifier, profile link, phone number, email address, payment handle, and any message showing a deadline or demand. Capture the surrounding conversation so that a single screenshot does not remove the context.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep an original copy when possible

Save screenshots in a secure location and keep the original message or email in the service if it remains accessible. Write down when you saw the threat and when you reported it. Do not alter screenshots with annotations that could obscure the original details; make a separate note if you need to explain what happened.

Do not collect evidence by escalating contact

You do not need to trick the sender, bargain for a confession, open a suspicious attachment, or send another image. Do not forward explicit material to friends or public forums. Your safety is more important than building a perfect file, and a report can be made with the information you already have.

Where to report the threat

The platform

Use the platform’s built-in report flow for threats, harassment, extortion, or non-consensual intimate images. Include the account identifier and explain that the person is threatening to distribute an intimate image without permission. If the first report is closed automatically, save the case number or confirmation and use the service’s appeal or safety-contact route.

Local law enforcement and the FBI

Local law enforcement can advise on the laws and preservation steps in your jurisdiction. In the United States, the FBI accepts reports through tips.fbi.gov and 1-800-CALL-FBI. The FBI warns against paying people who promise to “fix” sextortion for a fee; those services can be another form of exploitation.

NCMEC when the image was made before age 18

If the person shown was under 18 when the image or video was created, report it to NCMEC’s CyberTipline, even if that person is an adult now. The FTC lists NCMEC at 1-800-THE-LOST (1-800-843-5678). Do not download, copy, or redistribute child sexual-abuse material in an attempt to document it; tell the reporting service what you have and follow its instructions.

Rules differ outside the United States. You can still report to the platform and your local police or cybercrime agency, but U.S. federal processes and deadlines do not automatically apply in another country.

If the image has already been posted

Request removal directly from the service

Report each post or account through the service’s intimate-image or privacy process. Include the exact post URL, account name, and a statement that you did not consent to publication. Ask the service to remove the image and known identical copies, and keep the confirmation number.

What the U.S. 48-hour rule covers

For covered U.S. platforms, the FTC says the Take It Down Act requires a removal-request process and requires the platform to remove a reported image and known identical copies within 48 hours of a valid request. This is a U.S. rule for covered services, not a worldwide promise and not a guarantee that every copy, screenshot, or re-upload will disappear.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If a covered platform has no request route, the route is broken, or the image remains after 48 hours, FTC guidance says to report the platform at consumer.ftc.gov/articles/image-based-abuse-what-know-and-do, which directs users to the FTC’s Take It Down reporting process. Keep your original platform report and timestamps so you can show what happened.

Hashing tools: choose by age when the image was made

Hashing creates a digital fingerprint of an image on your device. Participating services can compare that fingerprint with uploads and block or remove matching files. Hashing can help limit distribution, but it is not a universal deletion command.

Situation Service Eligibility or purpose Important limits
You are currently 18 or older, were 18 or older when the image was made, are depicted in it, and still have the file StopNCII Creates the hash on your device and shares the fingerprint with participating companies; the image itself is not downloaded to the service. Only participating platforms can use the hash. Exact or near-exact matching works best; encrypted messaging services may not support it.
The image or video was made when the depicted person was under 18 NCMEC’s Take It Down Age-appropriate hashing route identified by RAINN and the FTC for material created before the person turned 18. It does not guarantee that every copy will be found or removed, particularly on services that do not participate.

Using StopNCII as an eligible adult

StopNCII is free. It is intended for a person who is currently at least 18, was at least 18 when the image was taken, appears in the image, and still possesses it. The hash is generated locally rather than requiring the service to receive the original file. Follow the site’s instructions, select the files you still have, and record any case information it provides.

StopNCII reports an “over 90% removal rate” and more than 300,000 individual non-consensual intimate images removed. Those are the service’s own reported figures, accessed in 2026—not an independent evaluation and not a prediction for an individual case.

Using Take It Down for images made before age 18

Take It Down is the route for images or videos created when the depicted person was under 18. The relevant age is the person’s age when the file was made, not necessarily their age when a threat is received or when a report is filed. If you are unsure which service fits, ask NCMEC, the platform, or a qualified advocate before submitting.

Understand what hashing cannot do

  • A hash is useful only where participating companies check it.
  • It is strongest for the same file or a close match. A crop, edit, filter, or re-encoded version may require a separate hash if you still have that version.
  • Most encrypted messaging services may not be able to scan or act on the hash.
  • Hashing does not identify the sender, investigate the threat, or guarantee that an image will never be shared.
  • Do not delay an urgent platform, police, FBI, or NCMEC report while preparing a hash.

Support when the threat is overwhelming

You do not have to handle this alone. RAINN’s National Sexual Assault Hotline offers free, confidential, 24/7 support in English and Spanish: call 800.656.HOPE (4673), chat at RAINN.org/hotline, or text HOPE to 64673.

The National Domestic Violence Hotline is available at 1-800-799-SAFE (7233), by texting START to 88788, or through live chat at thehotline.org. This can be appropriate when the threat comes from a current or former partner, household member, or someone who may know where you live.

For a minor or a person dealing with an image made before age 18, the FTC lists NCMEC at 1-800-THE-LOST (1-800-843-5678). A trusted adult can make the call with the young person and help preserve account details without circulating the image.

Common traps to avoid

Paying to make it stop

Payment does not create a reliable promise of deletion. Extortionists may demand more money, more images, or access to additional accounts after receiving the first payment. Stop contact instead of treating payment as a removal strategy.

Hiring a “recovery” company that guarantees a result

Be wary of anyone who contacts you after the threat and promises guaranteed removal, prosecution, or recovery for an upfront fee. The FBI’s warning is direct: “Don’t fall prey to for-profit companies charging sextortion victims for help.” Use official platform, law-enforcement, NCMEC, FTC, and survivor-support routes.

Deleting everything before recording the essentials

Deleting an account or conversation can remove information that investigators or the platform need. First save the identifying details that are safe to keep; then block, restrict, or deactivate according to your safety plan.

Assuming a threat is never actionable

Whether a threat alone violates criminal law depends on the facts and jurisdiction. RAINN notes that a threat may not be legally actionable in every situation, but platform rules can still prohibit it and law enforcement can advise you. Report the conduct rather than trying to decide the legal conclusion yourself.

A practical route-selection checklist

  • Threat only, no known post: preserve safe evidence, report the account, block it, tell someone you trust, and contact local law enforcement or the FBI.
  • Image already posted: submit the platform’s removal request, save the confirmation, and use the U.S. FTC route if a covered platform fails to provide or honor the process.
  • Image made when the depicted person was under 18: contact NCMEC and use Take It Down; do not redistribute the file.
  • Eligible adult with the original file: consider StopNCII while also reporting the threat or post.
  • Threat from a partner or ex-partner: include a domestic-violence advocate in your safety planning, especially if the person can reach you offline.

If you remember only one principle, remember this: the person threatening or sharing the image is responsible. You are entitled to stop engaging, seek support, report the abuse, and protect your accounts and physical safety.
