If someone has created, threatened to share, or posted a sexualized image of you without your consent, you are not at fault. If you are in immediate danger, call 911 in the United States or your local emergency number. Otherwise, report the content to the service hosting it, preserve useful evidence if you can do so safely, and consider the age-appropriate image-hashing tool described below. You do not have to handle this alone.
What to do first
If you may be in immediate danger
Contact 911 in the United States or local emergency services elsewhere. If someone is threatening to publish an image, save the messages if it is safe, report the account to the service, and reach out to someone you trust or a support service. A threat by itself does not necessarily start the federal 48-hour platform-removal process; that process concerns a request about intimate images shared on a covered platform.

Preserve evidence if it is safe
Before a post or account disappears, record the post’s web address, the account name and handle, the date and time, and any messages, threats, payment demands, or confirmation numbers from reports you have already made. Keep the information somewhere secure. You do not need to view, download, or save an intimate image to report it. If looking at the material is distressing, ask a trusted person to help document the post. Evidence can help, but collecting it is not a prerequisite for reporting.
How to report an intimate image to the platform

Go to the service where the image appears and use its report function or dedicated form for nonconsensual intimate imagery, sexual exploitation, or similar abuse.

Give the most specific location and account details available, such as the post URL, username, and when you found it. Explain that the image is shared without your consent and, if relevant, is an AI-generated or manipulated sexual image of you.

If the image appears on more than one service, report each post or location separately. Save any confirmation or reference number.

If there is no exact matching report category, choose the closest relevant category and explain what happened. RAINN recommends this approach when a platform’s categories do not fit.

Use each service’s own current reporting page; platform policies and form names can change. Do not repost the image to draw attention to it. Avoid confronting the person responsible if doing so could put you at risk, and do not treat a payment demand as a reason to pay by default.

What the U.S. 48-hour rule does—and does not—mean
The TAKE IT DOWN Act, Public Law 119-12, was enacted on May 19, 2025. It addresses intentional disclosure of nonconsensual intimate visual depictions and includes digital forgeries. FTC guidance says covered platforms must provide a way to report intimate images shared without consent, including deepfakes, and must remove the reported images and copies within 48 hours of a request.
This is a U.S. legal framework, and the law has definitions and scope limits. Do not assume every site or every situation is covered, or that a threat to post an image alone triggers the 48-hour deadline. The FTC’s September 2026 guidance describes the deadline for a request concerning images shared on a covered platform.

If the image is still up after 48 hours
If 48 hours have passed since your request to a covered platform and the image remains, report the platform at TakeItDown.ftc.gov. This is a complaint about the platform’s compliance; it is not an emergency service or a tool that directly removes the post for you. The FTC does not promise status updates and is generally unable to enforce against platforms outside U.S. jurisdiction.
Should you use an image-hashing service?
Hashing tools can complement a platform report, but they do a different job. A platform report asks a service to act on a particular post. A hashing service creates a digital fingerprint of an image or video so participating platforms can look for matching material. RAINN and FTC guidance describe these processes as not uploading the actual image through the hashing step.

RAINN notes that most encrypted messaging services are not covered, and some participating services scan only public or unencrypted areas. A crop, edit, or AI modification may not match the original file’s hash. Hashing ordinary photos also cannot stop someone from later using those photos to generate a new deepfake. These limits do not make hashing pointless; they explain why it should be used alongside direct reports, not instead of them.
If the image was made when you were under 18
If you are currently under 18, or the image or video was taken or created when you were under 18, do not download, forward, or circulate it. RAINN says sexualized imagery involving someone under 18 is child sexual abuse material even if the person depicted is now an adult. NCMEC’s Take It Down is intended for material made when the person was under 18. RAINN also directs people to the NCMEC CyberTipline to report suspected child sexual abuse material.
You can still report the content directly to the service hosting it. You do not need to pass the image to another person to ask for help or make a report.

Support and reporting choices
You can seek support without first deciding whether to contact law enforcement. RAINN’s National Sexual Assault Hotline offers free, confidential support 24/7/365 in English and Spanish: call 800-656-HOPE (4673), chat at RAINN.org/hotline, or text HOPE to 64673. Reporting suspected crimes to law enforcement is another option; the decision is yours unless an immediate safety emergency requires urgent help.
The TAKE IT DOWN Act and the FTC complaint route are U.S.-specific. If you are outside the United States, use your local official reporting channels or contact a local specialist service for advice about the laws and remedies where you live.
