If someone creates or shares a fake nude or other sexual deepfake of you, report it to the platform hosting it and ask for removal. If you’re in the United States, covered platforms must remove qualifying material and known identical copies within 48 hours after a request under the TAKE IT DOWN Act. You can also take steps to limit matching uploads, request removal from search results, and report threats or extortion. A fake image still matters: FTC guidance covers intimate images that are real, digitally altered, or generated with AI.
What to do first
- Record the details, if it is safe. Note the page or post URL, account name, platform, and when you found it. Keep the platform’s report confirmation and any relevant correspondence. Don’t forward or repost the intimate image to prove what happened.
- Report the content to the platform hosting it. Use its process for nonconsensual intimate imagery, or contact its help or support team. Ask it to remove the image and any known identical copies. Save the report confirmation.
- Choose any additional reporting route that applies. A platform report addresses the hosted content; a report to law enforcement addresses the person responsible. Other routes, such as search-result removal or hash-matching services, address different parts of the problem.
What the 48-hour rule means in the United States
Under the federal TAKE IT DOWN Act, covered platforms must provide a way to report covered intimate images and remove qualifying material, along with known identical copies, within 48 hours after receiving a request. The rule covers real, altered, and AI-generated intimate images. The deadline applies to covered platforms under US law; it is not a worldwide rule or a guarantee that every copy will disappear from the internet.

If the platform has no reporting process, its process is broken, or it has not acted within 48 hours, report the platform’s compliance failure to the FTC at TakeItDown.ftc.gov. This FTC report concerns the platform’s obligations; it does not itself remove the hosted image. The FTC identifies 48 hours as the removal deadline in its 2026 guidance. FTC Chairman Andrew Ferguson described the requirement in a May 19, 2026 transcript: “Then, they must quickly take down those images — and any known identical copies — within 48 hours of your request.”
How to limit further circulation
If you are an adult and have a copy
StopNCII.org is a free global tool operated by the Revenge Porn Helpline. It creates a digital fingerprint, or hash, from an image you select and shares the fingerprint—not the image—with participating platforms, which can scan for matches. It can help limit circulation on those services, but does not guarantee deletion everywhere.

If the image involves someone under 18
NCMEC’s Take It Down service is the hash-matching route for minors who have a copy. NCMEC’s CyberTipline is also a reporting route for a minor’s case. Use those services and appropriate authorities; don’t circulate or upload illegal imagery as a way to document the abuse. The FTC distinguishes this route from StopNCII, which it recommends for adults with a copy.
How to request removal from Google Search
Google accepts removal requests for qualifying fake sexual or nude content if it identifies you, falsely depicts you nude or in a sexual or intimate state, and was distributed without your consent. Google also has a US TAKE IT DOWN Act request route for its products. Its formal request asks for exact content URLs, your relationship to the person depicted, and a completed form.

Search-result removal and removal from the original website are separate. Taking a result out of Google Search can reduce discovery through Search, but the page may remain on its host or be reachable another way. Report the content to the hosting platform as well.
What to do about threats, blackmail, or immediate danger
If someone threatens to share an image or is extorting you, the FTC advises you not to pay, send more images, give them access to your accounts or devices, or continue communicating. Stop contact and block the person. Tell someone you trust, and report the perpetrator to local law enforcement and the FBI at tips.fbi.gov or 1-800-CALL-FBI. For a minor’s case, report through NCMEC’s CyberTipline. If you face an immediate physical safety risk, contact local emergency services.
