Remove the smart contact lens immediately and leave it out. Keep it in its case, then contact an eye-care professional promptly. Do not put the lens back in even if the irritation or blurred vision improves. Pain, reduced vision, marked redness, discharge, swelling, or light sensitivity require urgent professional attention.
Do these three things immediately
- Remove the lens. FDA contact-lens guidance says to remove lenses immediately when irritation or possible infection symptoms occur and not put them back in your eye. Wash and dry your hands before handling the lens, if you can do so without delaying removal.
- Store it in its case. Keep the removed lens rather than throwing it away. An eye-care professional may be able to use it when determining what caused the problem. Bring the case as well as the lens to the appointment.
- Contact an eye-care professional. Explain that you were wearing a smart contact lens and developed irritation, blurred vision, or another change. Do not wait to see whether wearing it again “settles” the problem.
This advice applies even when the lens has a display, sensor, wireless function, or another electronic feature. The immediate safety issue is a symptomatic contact lens on the eye; device troubleshooting comes later, if a clinician says it is appropriate.

Why blurred vision and irritation should not be diagnosed at home
Blurred vision is not merely an inconvenience when it occurs with a contact lens. FDA lists blurred vision, pain, redness, excessive tearing or discharge, light sensitivity, itching, burning, a gritty sensation, and swelling among possible signs of contact-lens irritation or infection.

Contact-lens complications can worsen quickly. They may include an infection or a corneal ulcer, and rare severe cases can result in blindness. Symptoms alone cannot tell you whether the cause is a minor fit problem, surface irritation, inflammation, or a condition needing immediate treatment. An eye-care professional must assess the eye and determine the seriousness.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Do not use a temporary improvement as proof that the eye is safe. Removing the lens reduces continued exposure, but it does not establish that the underlying problem has resolved. Likewise, a lens that looks intact, a display that appears normal, or a battery that charges correctly does not rule out an eye problem.
How urgently to get help
| What you notice | What to do |
|---|---|
| Any irritation, itching, burning, gritty feeling, tearing, or a change in vision while wearing the lens | Remove the lens, keep it in its case, and contact your eye-care professional promptly. |
| Blurred or decreased vision that is significant, persistent, or worsening | Seek urgent professional eye care rather than monitoring it at home. |
| Eye pain, unusual redness, marked light sensitivity, discharge, or swelling | Contact an eye-care professional right away; these symptoms can signal a serious complication. |
| Symptoms that continue after removal | Keep the lens out and obtain professional assessment. Do not reinsert it while waiting. |
| You cannot clearly tell whether vision has returned to normal | Act as though the change is significant: leave the lens out and ask an eye-care professional for guidance. |
FDA’s consumer guidance gives the practical threshold plainly: “Take out your lenses and call your eye doctor right away if” you have vision changes, red eyes, eye pain or itchiness, or a lot of tears. That instruction is safer than trying to classify the symptom yourself.
Handle the removed lens and case safely
The lens can provide useful information to the clinician, but only if it is preserved without introducing more contamination. Tell the professional which storage solution is in the case and when it was added, if you know.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Place the lens in its case and take the case with you to the appointment.
- Follow the lens and solution labels exactly. If the product instructions conflict with advice from your eye-care professional, ask the professional how to proceed.
- Do not expose the lens or case to tap water, bottled water, shower water, swimming-pool water, or any other non-sterile water.
- Do not make saline at home. FDA specifically warns against non-sterile water and homemade saline for contact lenses.
- Do not reuse old solution or “top off” solution already in the case with fresh solution.
- Do not put the lens back in simply because redness, blur, or discomfort seems less noticeable.
- Do not rinse the lens in your mouth, wipe it on clothing, or transfer it to an improvised container.
These precautions matter because water and improvised mixtures can introduce organisms or fail to disinfect the lens. A storage case is for safely retaining the removed lens for evaluation, not a treatment for the eye. If the case is lost, tell the clinician rather than delaying care while trying to find a replacement.
Do not self-treat with new drops or medicines
Ask an eye-care professional before using a new medicine or topical eye product after a symptomatic lens episode. A product that feels soothing can still be unsuitable for a damaged or infected eye, and masking discomfort can make it harder to recognize deterioration.

Do not use another contact lens as a test, switch to a different lens on your own, or try to correct blur by changing a display setting. Until a clinician evaluates the eye, the safest approach is no contact lens in that eye and no device experimentation while it is irritated. Do not borrow someone else’s drops, lens, case, or solution.
What “smart contact lens” means for this advice
“Smart contact lens” is a broad description rather than one standardized consumer product. It can refer to proposed or research devices with displays, sensors, electronics, or wireless components. The question does not identify a model, manufacturer, regulatory jurisdiction, or instructions for use, so model-specific repair or calibration advice would be unsafe to invent.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Generic FDA contact-lens precautions therefore govern the immediate response. Do not open, bend, recharge, modify, clean, or troubleshoot electronic components while the lens is in your eye. Remove it first, protect the lens in its case, and use the device’s actual instructions for use only after an eye-care professional has addressed the symptoms.
Never assume that a smart lens follows the same replacement interval, disinfection method, charging procedure, or wearing schedule as an ordinary lens. Those details are model-specific. Until the manufacturer and clinician confirm them, do not infer them from another product or an online demonstration.
Information to bring to the eye-care professional
Bring the removed lens in its case and identify the device or lens model if you know it. Tell the clinician when you inserted it, when the irritation or blur began, whether symptoms changed after removal, and which solution or eye products were used. If the lens has special electronics, mention any warning, malfunction, unusual heat, display change, or charging event that occurred before the symptoms.

Also note whether one or both eyes were affected and whether pain, redness, discharge, swelling, tearing, itching, burning, gritty sensation, or light sensitivity appeared. This information does not replace an examination, but it helps the professional understand the sequence of events. Do not delay care while searching for a manual, app log, purchase record, or charging accessory. The eye examination is the priority; device records and instructions can be reviewed afterward.
What to do while waiting for care
- Leave the symptomatic lens out of the affected eye.
- Avoid driving or operating equipment if vision remains blurred.
- Keep the lens and case available for the appointment.
- Follow only directions given by your eye-care professional and the product labeling.
- If pain, vision loss, redness, discharge, swelling, or light sensitivity becomes more pronounced, treat that change as a reason to seek urgent professional care rather than waiting for a routine visit.
- Keep your hands away from the eye as much as possible and do not attempt to scrape, rub, or reposition the eye surface.
Do not share the lens, case, or solution with another person. Do not discard the lens before asking whether the clinician wants to inspect it. If you have already discarded it, still seek care and report what happened; lack of a lens sample should not postpone an assessment.
What is known about smart-lens availability
FDA maintains information about contact lenses that have been reviewed and released for sale in the United States. That regulatory resource can help verify a specific product, but it is not a complete worldwide inventory and the absence of a device from a list does not, by itself, prove that the device is unsafe or unavailable everywhere. Verification must be specific to the model, manufacturer, and country.
One dated example illustrates why broad assumptions are risky. In a January 6, 2023 company announcement, Mojo Vision CEO Drew Perkins wrote, “This change means that Mojo Vision has also made the difficult decision to decelerate work on Mojo Lens,” and said the lens had not shipped. That statement concerns Mojo Lens at that time; it does not establish the present status of every smart-lens project or authorize a consumer to diagnose a symptomatic eye.
Accordingly, do not conclude that a lens is approved, commercially available, or suitable for continued wear merely because it appears in a video, research report, investor announcement, or marketplace listing. Confirm the actual instructions for use and applicable regulator record for the exact device. Regardless of availability, irritation or vision changes call for the same first response: remove the lens and obtain professional guidance.

When it is safe to consider wearing a lens again
Only an eye-care professional who has evaluated the episode should tell you when, or whether, to resume contact-lens wear. Do not infer clearance from a temporary return to normal vision, from a lens that looks clean, or from a device that powers on normally. A clinician may instead tell you to discard the lens, replace the case or solution, change the wearing schedule, or stop using that device; follow that individualized direction.
If the professional asks you to use the lens again, follow the exact insertion, cleaning, disinfection, replacement, and charging instructions for that model. Ask what symptoms should trigger another removal and how quickly to call. If symptoms return, remove it immediately and contact the clinician again.

Can I put the lens back in if the blur disappears?
No. FDA guidance says not to put a lens back in after irritation or possible infection symptoms. Temporary improvement does not show that the eye is safe.
Should I throw the lens away?
Keep it in its case and take it to the eye-care professional unless that professional tells you otherwise. It may help with determining the cause.
Can I rinse it with bottled water or homemade saline?
No. Avoid all non-sterile water and homemade saline. Do not reuse or top off solution in the case.

Does smart-lens electronics change the first-aid steps?
No. Remove the symptomatic lens first. Do not attempt charging, repair, calibration, display adjustments, or other troubleshooting while it is in the eye.
How do I know whether this is an infection?
You cannot reliably diagnose that at home. Pain, redness, discharge, light sensitivity, swelling, blurred or reduced vision, and persistent symptoms all warrant prompt professional assessment.
What if I do not know the model?
Do not delay care. Bring the lens and case if possible, describe what happened, and provide any packaging or device information you can find later.
Key points to remember
- Remove a symptomatic smart contact lens immediately and do not reinsert it without professional advice.
- Blurred vision, pain, redness, discharge, swelling, tearing, itching, burning, gritty sensations, or light sensitivity deserve prompt attention.
- Keep the lens in its case for the eye-care visit.
- Never improvise with water, homemade saline, reused or topped-off solution, or unapproved medicines.
- Smart electronics do not change the first-aid priority: protect the eye first, then address the device.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do first if a smart contact lens hurts?
Remove it immediately, leave it out, keep it in its case, and contact an eye-care professional promptly.
Is blurry vision after removing the lens still serious?
Yes. Persistent, worsening, or significant blurred or decreased vision needs urgent professional eye care rather than home monitoring.
Can I use eye drops before I am examined?
Ask an eye-care professional before using a new medicine or topical eye product. Do not self-treat or borrow someone else’s drops.
Does FDA advice apply to every smart contact lens?
The general safety response applies to symptoms while wearing a contact lens. Exact charging, cleaning, replacement, and wearing instructions remain specific to the device and its regulator record.
