A Shodan result is evidence that a service was reachable from the public internet when Shodan scanned it—not proof that your network was hacked. Verify that the listed address is still yours, identify the device behind each port, close anything you do not need, harden services that must stay reachable, and then verify the change with a fresh outside scan.
Residential addresses can change hands, scans can become stale, and a port shown on your public address may belong to a forwarded camera, NAS, game server, remote-access host, or another device rather than the router itself. Treat the finding as an exposure incident until you can explain it.

What a Shodan result actually tells you
Shodan records internet-facing services and displays details such as open ports, protocols, banners, web technologies, and sometimes vulnerability information. If your home IP appears in a result, at least one service answered from that address during Shodan’s scan.
That observation does not establish that an attacker logged in, exploited a flaw, or even that the address still belongs to you. Internet providers commonly assign residential addresses dynamically. A later subscriber may receive an address that previously appeared in a Shodan record. Always compare the address and scan time with the WAN or public address shown in your router or supplied by your internet provider.
A banner can also outlive a configuration change. Use the result to find what needs checking, not as a substitute for a current external test or your own device and router logs.
Do these checks first
- Confirm ownership and freshness. In the router’s status or internet section, note the current WAN/public IPv4 address. Compare it with the address in Shodan and record the scan timestamp. If they do not match, the result may describe a former assignment rather than your present network.
- Record every detail. Save the port number, protocol, banner text, hostname, detected device, and any listed software or version. This information helps you map the exposure to a local device and recognize an obsolete or default service.
- Check the router’s forwarding table. Look under labels such as Port Forwarding, NAT, Virtual Server, or Applications and Gaming. Match the external port to the internal IP address and device name. Also review the connected-device list; the router itself does not necessarily own the exposed service.
- Ask whether the service is needed. CISA’s 2025 internet-exposure guidance frames the key question as, “Why does this system and service need to be running?” A household camera, NAS, game server, or remote desktop host may have a legitimate purpose, but an old test rule or forgotten device usually does not.
Close an unnecessary port
Remove the forwarding rule
Delete or disable the matching port-forwarding, NAT, or virtual-server entry. If several rules point to the same device, review all of them; closing one port does not remove other exposure.

Turn off the service
Disable the corresponding server or remote-access feature on the endpoint. For example, stop an unused web administration panel, file-sharing service, camera remote-access function, or game server. If you cannot identify the endpoint, disconnect suspected devices one at a time and observe which rule or local address disappears from the router’s device list.

Prevent the rule from returning
Review automatic port mapping. UPnP can create forwarding entries without a manual router change, so turn it off when you do not need it and remove any rules it created. Check again after the device has been online for a while.
Test from outside your network
Do not rely on testing from Wi-Fi inside the house. Use an external connection or an on-demand Shodan scan where available. Confirm that the port no longer answers and that the old banner is gone. If the listing remains unchanged immediately after the fix, allow for scan and caching delay, then perform another external check.
Keep a service reachable without exposing it unnecessarily
Some people intentionally publish a service. A remote file server, self-hosted website, or game server can remain online, but it should be treated as an internet-facing system rather than a private home device.

- Patch every layer. Install current firmware for the router and endpoint, and update the exposed application. Replace software that no longer receives security fixes.
- Replace defaults. Change default administrator names and passwords on the router, endpoint, camera, NAS, and application. Use a different, long password for every account.
- Use stronger authentication. Enable multifactor authentication where the service supports it. For SSH, use key authentication and disable password login where practical; keep the host patched.
- Restrict who can connect. Limit allowed source addresses or networks when the router or application permits it. A service needed only from work or a family member’s fixed connection should not accept the entire internet.
- Put administration behind a safer access path. Use a VPN or controlled jump host for management instead of publishing a router, NAS, camera, or desktop administration page directly. Separate the public application from the device’s administrative interface.
- Minimize what the banner reveals. Remove default pages and disable unused services. An exposed version string can make outdated software easier to target, even when no exploit has yet occurred.
For a service that cannot meet these conditions, the safer decision is to remove its forwarding rule and use a vendor relay or VPN-based access method instead.

The Federal Trade Commission recommends a baseline that applies even when Shodan shows no open port:
- Choose WPA3 Personal when all important devices support it; otherwise use WPA2 Personal.
- Set a unique administrator password and a separate, unique Wi-Fi password. Do not reuse either one on another account.
- Install current router software and enable automatic updates if the model offers them.
- Keep the router firewall enabled.
- Create a guest network for visitors and devices that do not need access to household computers or storage.
- Turn off remote management, Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS), and Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) when they are not required.
If the router cannot support WPA2 or WPA3, lacks a usable firewall, or no longer receives security updates, replacement is the practical fix. When selecting a replacement, check WPA3/WPA2 support, the vendor’s security-support horizon and automatic updates, firewall and logging controls, the ability to disable remote management, WPS, and UPnP, MFA or certificate support, guest-network and device-segmentation options, safe configuration backup and restore, and total cost.

Interpret the port and service, not just the number
Port numbers alone do not establish severity. Authentication, software version, patch status, network restrictions, and intended use determine the actual risk. Use the following as a triage guide.
| Finding | What it may represent | Recommended response |
|---|---|---|
| 80 or 443 | A web server or device web interface | Confirm that publishing it is intentional. Update the software, require authentication, and prefer HTTPS with a valid certificate. Remove the forwarding rule if it is only an administration page or an abandoned project. |
| 22 (SSH) | Remote shell access | Close it if remote shell access is unnecessary. If it must remain, restrict source addresses, use keys and MFA where practical, disable password login when feasible, and keep the host patched. |
| 3389 (RDP) | Windows Remote Desktop | Treat direct internet exposure as high risk. Remove the forwarding rule and provide access through a VPN or another controlled remote-access design. |
| 445 (SMB) or 23 (Telnet) | File sharing or plaintext remote administration | Close these on a home internet connection unless there is an exceptional, documented need. CISA identifies insecure and plaintext services as services to disable or restrict. |
| Camera, NAS, smart-home, or game-server banner | A specific household device or application | Identify the exact device, change default credentials, install current firmware, and decide whether a vendor relay or VPN can replace direct exposure. |
Does the result mean you were hacked?
No. A reachable service is an exposure condition, not a compromise record. There is no authoritative probability that a residential Shodan finding represents a breach, so do not infer one from the listing alone.

The public address changed
Confirm the current WAN address again. A dynamic residential address can move between subscribers, so you may be checking a record for an address you no longer use.
The wrong device was changed
Compare the forwarding rule’s internal address with the router’s connected-device list. A camera, NAS, desktop, or game console may be answering while you are inspecting the router.

An automatic rule recreated the exposure
Check UPnP-created mappings and application settings that request remote access. Disable the feature, remove the recreated rule, and test again from outside.
The listing is stale
Shodan’s displayed banner may predate your change. Perform a fresh external scan and compare the result with the old timestamp. Only the new test tells you whether the service is currently reachable.
IPv4 and IPv6 were treated differently
Check whether the service is reachable over both address families. A router rule removed for IPv4 does not necessarily change an independently configured IPv6 firewall rule. Apply the same least-exposure policy to each protocol your provider and router use.
Verify the finished configuration
- From an external network, scan the public address or use Shodan’s on-demand scan capability where available.
- Confirm that only deliberately published ports respond.
- Read each returned banner and verify that it no longer exposes an obsolete version, default page, or unintended administration service.
- Log in locally to the router and confirm that forwarding, remote management, WPS, and UPnP settings match your intended configuration.
- Review endpoint logs after the change for unexpected connection attempts or account activity.
Keep a written inventory of intentional public services, their owners, update responsibility, allowed source networks, and the date you last verified them. This prevents a temporary exception from becoming a forgotten opening.

Home addresses and device configurations change, so a one-time cleanup is not a permanent guarantee. Shodan Monitor can alert on new services, malware, open databases, vulnerable services, expired SSL, and other triggers. Its domain-based monitoring is intended for dynamic home IP addresses. Configure alerts for the domains or addresses you control, review notifications promptly, and remove any service you can no longer justify.
CISA’s 2025 Internet Exposure Reduction Guidance warns that organizations can unknowingly leave common weaknesses exposed and become easy targets. The same operational lesson applies at home: know what is reachable, minimize it, patch what remains, and verify from outside your own network.
