What to Do If PFAS Is Found in Your Drinking Water

Do not panic, but do not ignore the result. First confirm which PFAS were detected, at what concentration, where and when the sample was collected, and which agency comparison level applies. Until a utility or health agency advises you, use a verified alternate source for drinking, cooking, brushing teeth and preparing infant formula. Then select treatment based on the specific compounds, your plumbing and the amount of water your household uses.

Start with these actions

  1. Identify the source. Determine whether the result is from a public-water system or a private well. The next steps and responsible agencies differ.
  2. Get the complete laboratory information. Ask for every PFAS measured, each concentration and unit, the sampling date and location, the analytical method, detection limits and the state or federal comparison level used to interpret the result.
  3. Use a safer source while questions remain. If there is a credible concern, use bottled water or another known-safe source for drinking, cooking, brushing teeth, making ice, washing food, preparing infant formula and any activity in which water could be swallowed. Follow local instructions for bathing, laundry and other uses; there is no universal restriction for every PFAS result.
  4. Do not boil the water to remove PFAS. PFAS are not removed by boiling, and evaporation can concentrate nonvolatile contaminants.
  5. Do not buy a filter solely because its label says “carbon,” “purifier” or “water filter.” Confirm an independent, model-specific PFAS-reduction claim and plan for scheduled replacement.

Confirm whether the result is from a public supply or a private well

Public-water customers

Contact the water utility first. Ask how the sample was collected, whether the result represents treated water leaving the plant or water at a customer tap, whether additional samples were taken, and what corrective action or monitoring is planned. The utility should explain the PFAS measured, the units, the sampling date, the applicable comparison level and any advisory that applies to your service area. If the utility cannot answer a technical question, contact your state or local environmental or health agency.

Private-well owners

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) does not regulate private wells or set recommended private-well standards. State, tribal or local agencies therefore become the key source of interpretation and next steps. Keep the original report and ask the agency whether the sample location, timing and method are adequate. Continue the routine testing your jurisdiction recommends for bacteria, nitrate and other common well concerns in addition to PFAS testing.

How to verify a PFAS water test

Use a qualified laboratory

If you collect another sample, use a state-certified laboratory that uses EPA-developed drinking-water methods. EPA’s April 2024 PFAS National Primary Drinking Water Regulation questions and answers specifically advises this approach. A home screening kit without laboratory confirmation is not definitive evidence of either a safe or unsafe supply.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Preserve the evidence

  • Keep the complete laboratory report, not only the headline result.
  • Record the sampling date, time, address and exact tap or well location.
  • Retain chain-of-custody records showing how the sample was handled and transported.
  • Note each compound, its concentration, units, reporting limit and detection limit.
  • Record the method version and laboratory certification information.

These details matter because PFAS is a large chemical class, and treatment performance varies by compound and by conditions such as concentration, flow rate, competing contaminants and the age of the treatment media. A result reported as “PFAS detected” without compound names and units cannot support a sound equipment decision.

Can you still drink the tap water?

That answer depends on the measured compounds, concentration, the comparison level used by your jurisdiction and the advice from the utility or health department. A single result does not automatically establish an immediate health outcome, and it cannot diagnose an individual. Conversely, the absence of an advisory does not make an unverified home test reliable.

When concern remains while officials review the result, use an alternate safe source for ingestion-related activities. CDC guidance for private wells advises bottled water or another safe source until the water is treated and tested. Ask your local authority specifically about bathing, showering, laundry, dishwashing and pets; do not assume that a drinking-water precaution automatically applies to every household use.

Choose treatment for the actual problem

EPA identifies granular activated carbon (GAC), ion-exchange resin and reverse osmosis (RO) as relevant technologies. The right choice depends on the PFAS measured, concentration, flow demand, plumbing, available space, wastewater handling and whether the main exposure route is ingestion.

Point-of-use treatment

A point-of-use (POU) device treats water at one tap, commonly the kitchen tap used for drinking and cooking. It is often the practical first option when ingestion is the priority because it treats a smaller volume and can avoid the cost and maintenance of treating showers, toilets and outdoor fixtures. You must consistently use the treated tap for every activity in which water may be swallowed.

Whole-house treatment

A whole-house, or point-of-entry, system treats water as it enters the building. It may be appropriate when the well has multiple contaminated outlets, when local authorities identify broader contact concerns or when the household needs treated water at many fixtures. It requires equipment sized for peak flow, space for tanks and valves, a maintenance plan and a way to manage spent media or brine. Whole-house treatment is not automatically better for a result that primarily raises an ingestion concern.

Factor Point-of-use Whole-house
Primary scope One drinking or cooking tap Most or all indoor fixtures
Best fit Ingestion is the main concern and water demand is limited Several fixtures require treated water or local guidance identifies broader use needs
Installation Countertop, under-sink or dedicated faucet; usually simpler Plumbed at the entry point; requires flow and space planning
Operating burden Fewer cartridges or membranes, but the treated tap must be used consistently More media, valves and plumbing to inspect and maintain
Waste and disposal Depends on technology; RO sends reject water to a drain Can involve larger volumes of spent media, backwash or brine
Cost information available from EPA Home filters generally cost $20 to more than $1,000, excluding maintenance; a POU RO system is estimated at $150 to $1,000, excluding maintenance Not stated as a single figure; sizing and installation vary substantially

The dollar figures are illustrative EPA guidance from 2024, not quotations or a guarantee of current retail prices. Installation, replacement media, membrane changes, testing and disposal add to ownership cost.

Compare GAC, ion exchange and reverse osmosis

Technology How it is used Important trade-offs
Granular activated carbon (GAC) Water passes through carbon media that adsorbs many PFAS compounds. Performance depends on the compound, media type, contact time, flow rate and competing contaminants. Media must be replaced before exhaustion; a generic carbon cartridge is not proof of PFAS reduction.
Ion-exchange resin Resin captures charged PFAS molecules as water passes through a treatment vessel. Capacity and selectivity vary by resin and water chemistry. Regeneration, brine or spent-resin disposal may be required, especially for larger systems.
Reverse osmosis (RO) Pressure pushes water through a membrane that rejects many dissolved contaminants; treated water is collected at a dedicated outlet. Requires adequate pressure, prefiltration and membrane replacement. It produces a reject-water stream, and the system may waste water unless designed and operated efficiently.

No technology removes every PFAS under every condition. Ask the installer or manufacturer for compound-specific performance data, expected capacity, required pretreatment, flow limits, waste handling and the test protocol behind the claim.

Check certification before buying

Look for an independent certification claim under NSF/ANSI 53 for PFAS reduction or NSF/ANSI 58 for reverse osmosis. Then verify the exact model number and the PFAS claim in the certifier’s online directory. EPA’s April 2024 guidance identifies five ANSI-accredited third-party certification bodies for this type of evaluation: NSF, Water Quality Association (WQA), IAPMO, CSA and UL.

Certification is not a promise of universal elimination. EPA stated that the standards discussed in April 2024 did not yet demonstrate removal down to the newer federal drinking-water standard levels. Check what compounds were tested, the influent concentration, rated capacity and endpoint used in the certification. A model may be certified for one PFAS claim but not for every compound in your laboratory report.

No manufacturer should be described as “EPA-approved” merely because a product is sold for PFAS treatment. EPA identifies technologies and testing frameworks; it does not endorse a particular consumer brand.

Install and maintain the system correctly

  1. Match the device to the report. Compare the certified claim with the PFAS compounds and concentrations in your result.
  2. Confirm plumbing requirements. Check pressure, flow, drain access, electrical needs, pretreatment and whether the device is designed for a private-well water chemistry.
  3. Record the baseline. Write down the installation date, model, serial number, rated capacity, initial meter reading and any pre-treatment test.
  4. Use the treated outlet. Label the dedicated faucet or refrigerator line so household members do not accidentally use an untreated tap for drinking or cooking.
  5. Replace media and membranes on schedule. Follow the manufacturer’s capacity or calendar interval, whichever comes first. EPA warns that a filter that is not replaced on schedule can increase PFAS exposure.
  6. Document every change. Keep receipts, replacement dates, flow readings and service records. Arrange post-treatment testing when the utility, health agency or installer recommends it.

Do not stretch a cartridge beyond its rated capacity because the water still tastes normal. Taste, odor and clarity do not establish PFAS removal.

What private-well owners should investigate

Ask the state or local agency whether nearby activities could explain the result. Possible sources include firefighting-foam use, industrial releases, landfills, contaminated groundwater and other sites identified by environmental officials. Map the well, septic system, drainage and nearby facilities, and share the information with the agency rather than attempting a source determination from one household sample.

Continue regular testing for overall well quality and repeat PFAS sampling when officials advise. If several neighboring wells are affected, coordinated sampling can help agencies define the affected area and identify assistance or treatment programs. Keep treatment and laboratory records if the property is sold or if responsibility for the well changes.

Public-water customers: follow the utility’s response

Utilities may change treatment, increase monitoring, blend sources or issue a use advisory. Ask for the schedule, the location of follow-up samples and how results will be communicated. If you rent, give the property manager or landlord the utility notice and ask which tap supplies drinking water. Do not assume that a pitcher or faucet filter is necessary—or sufficient—until you know whether the utility has already addressed the issue and which PFAS remain.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Consider exposure beyond drinking water

EPA lists contaminated sites, firefighting foam, food packaging, consumer products, biosolids and contaminated fish or other foods as possible PFAS pathways. Follow state or tribal fish-consumption advisories, particularly for locally caught fish. A water result cannot determine your individual body burden or predict disease. For personal medical questions, speak with a clinician or health department and provide the laboratory report, exposure history and any relevant advisory.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Boiling the water: it does not remove PFAS and may concentrate contaminants.
  • Relying on a home strip or screening kit: use a state-certified laboratory and EPA-developed method for a definitive result.
  • Buying an unverified “carbon” filter: require a model-specific independent PFAS claim.
  • Assuming one certified device handles every PFAS: performance is compound- and condition-specific.
  • Skipping maintenance: exhausted media or an overdue membrane can undermine treatment.
  • Treating every household use identically: ask officials whether restrictions apply to drinking only or to bathing, laundry and other activities.
  • Interpreting a number without units or a comparison level: concentration, method, date and regulatory context must travel together.

A practical decision checklist

  • Do you know whether the sample came from a utility or a private well?
  • Are the PFAS names, concentrations, units, date, location, method and detection limits documented?
  • Has a state or local authority explained the applicable comparison level?
  • Are you using an alternate safe source for ingestion while the result is reviewed?
  • Does the proposed device have an independently verified NSF/ANSI 53 or 58 PFAS claim for the exact model?
  • Is the system sized for your flow, pressure, water chemistry and wastewater arrangements?
  • Who will replace cartridges or membranes, and how will the dates be tracked?
  • For a private well, have you discussed possible sources and follow-up testing with the responsible agency?

Once those questions have clear answers, treatment becomes an engineering and maintenance decision rather than a guess based on a label or a single alarming headline.
