If one AirPod is silent, first make sure both earbuds and the case are charging; then test the affected AirPod by itself. If it is simply quieter, check its speaker mesh and the left-right audio balance. Reset only after those checks, using the procedure for your AirPods generation.
Check that both AirPods are charging

Make sure the charging case has power. If the case itself will not charge, check its cable and power connection. The connector varies by case, so use the Lightning or USB-C cable that matches your model; see Apple’s AirPods charging guidance.

Clean the case charging port if needed, then put both AirPods in the case and close the lid for 30 seconds.

Open the case near your iPhone or iPad and check that each AirPod registers as charging. If one does not, reseat it in the case and check the charging contacts for debris.

Test the silent AirPod on its own
Wear the affected AirPod in the correct ear, leave the other in the case, close the lid, and play audio. If the affected AirPod works alone, put both back in the case for 30 seconds, then open it near your device and test them together again. If it remains silent, continue to the reset section. If one AirPod is quieter, check the mesh and balance

Inspect the speaker mesh for debris. If your AirPods have removable ear tips, take them off before inspecting and cleaning.

On iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Accessibility > Audio & Visual and make sure Balance is centered. A balance setting shifted to one side can make the other sound unusually quiet.

Restart, then reset using the procedure for your model
First make sure the paired device is up to date. To restart the AirPods, place them in the case and close the lid for at least 10 seconds. If the issue continues, identify your AirPods generation before resetting: Apple’s current guide uses different steps for different models.
AirPods 1, 2, or 3; AirPods Pro 1 or 2
These models use the setup button on the back of the case. Follow the applicable model instructions in Apple’s restart, unpair, or reset guide.
AirPods 4 or AirPods Pro 3
These models use three sequences of double taps on the front of the case rather than the rear setup button. Follow the exact sequence in Apple’s guide linked above; do not substitute the older button procedure.

Apple says a successful reset is indicated by the status light flashing amber and then white. You will need to reconnect the AirPods to your device afterward.

Confirm both AirPods are charging and Bluetooth is on.

Check that AirPods are selected as the audio output on your paired device.

Retry pairing; if the connection still fails, use the model-specific reset steps above. Apple’s connection troubleshooting is at If your AirPods or AirPods Pro won’t connect.
Consider a firmware update only if the problem persists
AirPods firmware updates arrive automatically while the AirPods are charging and within Bluetooth range of an iPhone, iPad, or Mac connected to Wi-Fi. To give an update time to install, put the AirPods in their closed case, connect the case to power, and leave it within range of the Wi-Fi-connected device for at least 30 minutes. Then check the firmware version using Apple’s firmware update instructions. An update is not a guaranteed fix for a silent AirPod.

If charging, the solo-AirPod test, relevant mesh and balance checks, and the correct reset do not help, use Apple’s AirPods Support page to identify your model and find its support or replacement options. Availability and cost depend on the model, region, and coverage.
