What to Do If Oncoming Headlights Make It Hard to See

If oncoming headlights wash out your view, do not stare at the lamps or react with your own high beams. Look slightly toward the right edge of your lane or the fog line, keep the car tracking in its lane, and slow down enough to see the road and hazards. If visibility is still inadequate, leave the travel lane and stop only in a safe place.

That sequence—redirect your gaze, hold lane position, reduce speed, and stop safely if necessary—is the immediate response supported by Oregon driver guidance. The rest of the solution is prevention: clean glass and lights, correct headlight aim, suitable beam use in poor weather, and an eye-care check when glare is severe or persistent.

The safest response in the moment

  1. Look away from the lamps. Do not fix your eyes on the approaching headlights. Oregon’s night-driving guidance says to look a little to the right of the lights and watch the road edge or fog line. Keep scanning that area for the lane boundary, pedestrians, stopped vehicles, animals and debris.
  2. Keep the vehicle in its lane. Use the right side of your lane as a visual reference, but do not make a sudden steering movement toward the shoulder or the opposing lane. Keep both hands available for a steady correction and continue checking your lane position as the vehicle passes.
  3. Ease off the accelerator. Reduced visibility means you need more time to identify and avoid a hazard. Slow smoothly; avoid an abrupt brake application unless a specific hazard requires it. Continue at a speed that lets you stop within the portion of road you can actually see.
  4. Do not retaliate with high beams. Flashing or switching on high beams to “get back at” a driver can add glare for both vehicles and make a collision more likely. Maintain your low-beam setting and concentrate on your lane.
  5. Prepare to stop safely. If the glare does not clear after the vehicle passes, or you cannot identify the road edge and hazards, reduce speed further and look for a safe place outside the travel lane. Never stop in an active lane just because you are temporarily blinded.

The Oregon Department of Transportation Driver and Motor Vehicle Services summarizes the gaze technique this way: “Look a little to the right of oncoming lights and watch the road edge or fog line.” Treat the fog line as a reference, not as a target to cross.

How to keep your lane while your vision recovers

Glare can create a short interval in which contrast is poor even after the other vehicle has passed. During that interval, make your driving inputs smaller and slower.

Use a fixed visual reference

On a marked road, the right edge line gives you a dependable reference when the center of the scene is bright. On an unmarked road, use the visible pavement edge, shoulder boundary or the right-hand track of the lane. Do not look so far right that you lose awareness of what is ahead; alternate between the edge reference and the area immediately in front of the car.

Scan instead of staring

Avoid locking your eyes on one bright point. Make brief checks of the lane ahead, the right edge and the space where a hazard could appear. This keeps the headlights from becoming the only visual object you process.

Manage following distance

If another vehicle is ahead, leave enough space to respond if its driver brakes for an obstacle you cannot yet see. When glare, rain or dust reduces your view, add distance rather than trying to maintain the same pace as traffic.

When it is no longer safe to continue

Use a conservative threshold: if you cannot determine where your lane goes, identify vehicles or objects ahead, or stop within the visible roadway, you cannot safely continue at that speed.

  1. Signal and move toward a safe stopping location, such as a parking area, a broad shoulder that is fully outside the travel lane, or another place permitted by local rules.
  2. Come to a complete stop away from moving traffic. Avoid stopping just over a crest, around a blind curve or where another driver would have little time to react.
  3. Keep the vehicle visible to other road users with the legally required lights, and remain stopped until you can see well enough to proceed.
  4. If there is no safe place to pull off, continue slowing while maintaining lane position and look for the first safe opportunity. Do not abandon the lane through an abrupt swerve.

Oregon guidance specifically advises being ready to pull over and stop when visibility is reduced and says never to stop in a travel lane. Exact stopping and lighting rules vary by jurisdiction, so follow the law where you are driving.

Why headlights can be especially difficult to see

Headlight glare is not limited to one vehicle type or one age group. The practical causes to check are the conditions around the car, the car’s lighting setup and your own vision.

Dirty or hazy viewing surfaces

Film on the windshield, mirrors or headlamp lenses scatters light and can turn a small bright source into a larger veil. Interior glass haze can be hard to notice in daylight but obvious at night. Clean the inside and outside of the windshield, the side mirrors and the headlight lenses.

Headlights aimed too high or left misadjusted

A vehicle can have legal bulbs yet still produce unnecessary glare if its headlight aim is incorrect. Ask for headlight aim to be checked during inspection or service, especially after front-end repairs, suspension work, a change in ride height or repeated complaints from other drivers.

Low-visibility weather and airborne particles

Fog, smoke, dust and similar conditions reflect light back toward the driver. High beams can make that reflection worse. Use low beams in these conditions and reduce speed to match the shorter sight distance.

Individual light sensitivity

Some drivers experience unusually strong or prolonged glare. NHTSA guidance for older drivers recommends keeping prescription glasses current and asking an eye doctor whether extreme light sensitivity can be corrected. The advice is useful for anyone with severe or ongoing symptoms; it does not mean age alone explains every case.

Beam settings that reduce glare

Situation Use Reason
Normal dark road with no nearby traffic Use the beam setting allowed by local law, switching to low beams when another road user could be affected. High beams are intended for open stretches, not for shining into another driver’s eyes.
Approaching vehicle or vehicle ahead Dim to low beams before the vehicles are close enough to create glare. It protects the other driver’s view and helps prevent a glare-for-glare response.
Fog, smoke, dust or similar low visibility Low beams. High beams can reflect from airborne particles and reduce your own visibility.
Another driver fails to dim Keep your own low beams, look toward the right edge, slow down and stay in lane. Returning the glare increases risk rather than solving the problem.

Beam-distance requirements and other lighting laws differ by state and country. Check your local driver handbook for the exact switching distances; do not treat one jurisdiction’s legal numbers as universal.

  • Mirrors: Clean the exterior and interior mirror surfaces. Set them correctly before driving so you are not making adjustments while glare is occurring.
  • Headlight lenses: Remove dirt, road salt and insects. If a plastic lens is permanently cloudy or damaged, ask a qualified technician whether restoration or replacement is appropriate.
  • Aim and mounting: Have the beam aim and mounting checked after a collision, suspension change or loading change that alters the vehicle’s attitude.
  • Dashboard and cabin: Dim unnecessary interior displays and keep objects from blocking the windshield view. Avoid cleaning products that leave a glossy residue.

A clean microfiber cloth can be a useful maintenance item for glass, but it does not cure glare, correct an eye condition or make it safe to drive when you cannot see adequately.

Eyewear and eye-care decisions

Do not use sunglasses or tinted lenses at night

NHTSA advises against sunglasses or tinted lenses for night driving. They reduce the amount of light reaching your eyes when you already need available contrast. Yellow or “night-driving” lenses should not be treated as a proven fix on the basis of color alone.

Keep prescription lenses current

An outdated prescription can make road signs, lane markings and the edges of objects less distinct, which makes glare feel worse. Use the prescription intended for driving and keep the lenses clean and free of scratches.

Know when to arrange an eye examination

Make an appointment with an eye-care professional if headlights routinely cause severe discomfort, if the effect lasts well after vehicles pass, or if glare is accompanied by halos, blurred vision, headaches or a noticeable decline in night vision. An examination can determine whether a correctable vision issue is contributing. Do not diagnose the cause yourself or continue driving if your vision remains inadequate.

A practical pre-drive checklist

  1. Clean the windshield, mirrors and headlight lenses before a night trip.
  2. Set mirrors and seat position while parked.
  3. Confirm that your prescription eyewear is current; leave sunglasses and tinted lenses off at night.
  4. Choose low beams whenever you are near another road user or driving through fog, smoke or dust.
  5. Reduce speed on roads where glare, weather or curves limit the distance you can see.
  6. Identify possible safe pull-off areas on an unfamiliar route, rather than waiting until visibility becomes critical.

Common mistakes and the safer alternative

Mistake Why it is risky Safer alternative
Staring at the approaching headlights The bright source dominates your vision while hazards at the road edge disappear. Shift your gaze slightly right and scan the edge, lane and roadway ahead.
Swerving toward the shoulder or center line A sudden movement can leave your lane or strike an unseen hazard. Make gradual corrections using the lane edge as a reference.
Maintaining speed because the glare will pass soon You may reach a stopped vehicle or obstacle before you can see it. Slow smoothly to a speed matched to the visible roadway.
Flashing high beams at the other driver It adds glare and can provoke an unsafe exchange. Keep low beams and concentrate on controlling your own vehicle.
Stopping in the travel lane A following driver may not see you in time. Pull completely out of moving traffic before stopping, when a safe location is available.
Wearing tinted “night-driving” glasses They reduce available light and are not established as a glare cure. Use clear, current prescription lenses and seek professional advice for persistent symptoms.

A simple decision rule

Use this sequence whenever glare arrives: see the edge, hold the lane, slow the car, then decide whether you can continue. If the answer is no, move out of the travel lane at the first safe opportunity and stop. After the trip, address the likely contributor—glass or lens cleanliness, headlight aim, beam choice, weather or your vision—so the next encounter is less likely to become an emergency.
