Pause the AI task, unplug the phone if it is charging, move it out of sunlight or a hot car, and let it cool. Then check battery-use and temperature diagnostics before disabling features: warmth and a short battery day can also come from poor cellular signal, setup or restore work, backups, downloads, charging, or post-update optimization.
Use the controls for your specific phone to identify the app or system service consuming power. If the phone stays unusually hot while idle, repeatedly shows temperature warnings, shuts down, or continues draining rapidly for several days, contact the manufacturer rather than trying to replace the battery yourself.

First, decide whether the phone is warm or too hot
A processor-intensive task can make a phone feel warm. That can happen while an on-device AI feature is generating text, summarizing content, translating, editing images or transcribing audio, but it also happens during high-quality video, gaming, large downloads, setup, backup restoration, software updates and wireless charging.
“Too hot” is different. Stop the demanding activity immediately if the phone displays a temperature warning, becomes uncomfortable to hold, slows sharply, refuses to charge, or begins shutting down. Disconnect the charger, remove the phone from direct sunlight or a hot vehicle, place it in a cooler, ventilated location and leave it unused until it returns to normal. Do not put it in a freezer or against an ice pack, because condensation can damage electronics.

Do not judge the cause from touch alone. A warm case does not prove that an AI model is responsible, and a cool exterior does not prove that battery use is normal. Start with the phone’s own usage and temperature information.
Check evidence before blaming on-device AI
Look at battery use by app and system activity
Open your battery screen and note which apps and system processes used power during the period when the phone became warm or lost charge quickly. Look for foreground use, background activity, downloads, backup or restore work, and time spent on a weak cellular connection. If an AI feature was active but another app or system process used more power, changing the AI setting may not address the real cause.
Record the pattern for a day: the feature you used, whether the phone was charging, the network connection, screen brightness, and the battery percentage before and after. A repeatable drain that starts only when one feature runs is stronger evidence than a single warm session.

On Pixel 6a and later, open Settings > Battery > Battery diagnostics > Phone is very warm. Google’s diagnostic reports one of four qualitative states: Cold, Normal, Warm or Elevated. These labels help you decide whether to stop using the phone, but they are not a cross-brand numeric temperature scale.
In Pixel, also open Settings > Battery > Battery usage. Review both total use and background use, and leave battery optimization enabled unless a specific troubleshooting instruction tells you otherwise.

Check timing and environmental causes
Ask when the heat appears:
- Only while an AI task is running?
- While the phone is charging, especially wirelessly?
- After an operating-system update, setup, factory reset or restore?
- In direct sun, a hot car or an enclosed case?
- When cellular coverage is poor?
Apple lists setup, restore, major updates, wireless charging, processor-intensive apps and high-quality video as situations that can make an iPhone feel warmer. Google lists video, games, downloads and uploads, setup, backup restoration, and using demanding features while charging as causes of elevated Pixel temperature. Those explanations can coexist with AI use; the timing and battery screen help separate them.
What to do on a Pixel phone
Cool it safely during an active task
- Stop the AI generation or other resource-intensive operation.
- If the phone is plugged in and feels too hot, disconnect power.
- Move it away from sunlight, a hot car, bedding or any enclosed space with poor ventilation.
- Wait until the temperature returns to a normal state before resuming work.
- When you resume, lower screen brightness and use Wi-Fi instead of mobile data when practical; Google lists both as ways to reduce load.
Inspect consumption and optimization
Go to Settings > Battery > Battery usage and identify apps with unusually high foreground or background use. Keep battery optimization on. If the phone is new or has just been factory-reset, Google says optimization can take up to a few weeks while indexing, restoring data and adapting to use. A temporary first-week drop is therefore not proof that an AI feature has damaged the battery.

When Pixel protection is not enough
Repeated temperature warnings, heat while the phone is idle, or shutdowns after overheating require support. Google specifically advises seeking help if a Pixel continues to turn off after overheating.
What to do on an iPhone
Review the Battery screen
Open Settings > Battery. Examine app and system activity for the hours when the battery fell quickly. iPhone can identify background activity and periods of low cellular coverage, both of which can consume substantial energy without an AI task being the main cause.

Use Low Power Mode as a diagnostic and short-term measure
Turn on Settings > Battery > Low Power Mode. This reduces selected background and system features. If the phone’s drain improves markedly, leave it enabled while you identify the process responsible; it is not a permanent explanation or proof that AI caused the problem.
Allow time after an update
Apple advises waiting a few days after an operating-system update before judging battery life. Background tasks can continue after installation and temporarily affect both battery use and thermal behavior. If the pattern remains abnormal beyond that period, return to the Battery screen and seek support.
Mind charging temperature
Apple’s published operating guidance specifies an ambient range of 0°C to 35°C for current iPhone and iPad use. Apple also says charging can slow or pause outside safe temperature conditions and recommends charging within that range. These are general operating and charging limits, not an AI-specific threshold.
If heat occurs while charging, remove a case only if the case is trapping heat, keep the phone ventilated and stop charging if it becomes too hot. Do not infer battery damage from one warm charging session.
Check Battery Health before considering service
Open Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging. If the screen displays Service, Apple says to consider battery replacement or service. That recommendation comes from the battery-health diagnostic, not from warmth alone.

Find the feature’s own controls
On supported Galaxy models, AI controls are often inside the individual app’s settings rather than one universal switch. Depending on the model and feature, you may be able to turn an AI function off, restrict it, or select on-device-only processing. Open the settings for the app that provides the feature and check its AI, data-processing or privacy options.
Availability differs across models, software versions and individual features. Do not assume that a control shown in a help article exists on every Galaxy phone.
Verify the result instead of assuming it worked
After changing one setting, reproduce the same task under similar conditions and compare battery use and temperature. If the battery screen shows no meaningful change, restore the setting and investigate signal strength, charging, background synchronization or another app instead.

On-device AI runs model inference on the phone instead of sending every request to a remote server. Google describes Android AICore as a system service that manages AI models such as Gemini Nano. Google Research has explained that inefficient inference can increase memory-bandwidth demand, slow the user experience and drain battery.
That is a plausible mechanism, not a diagnosis of any particular phone. The reviewed manufacturer guidance does not establish a universal AI battery-drain percentage, a standard temperature rise, or a consumer benchmark that applies across devices. Workload size, model, chipset, screen brightness, network activity and whether the phone is charging all change the result.
Use a practical comparison, not brand temperature labels

Manufacturers do not publish one common consumer temperature scale, so “Warm” on one platform cannot be converted into a precise equivalent on another. Compare the diagnostic screen, observed battery use and protective response on your own model.
Post-update and setup drain: when to wait and when to act
New phone, factory reset or restore
Indexing photos, downloading applications, restoring messages and rebuilding search databases can keep the processor busy. Pixel guidance allows up to a few weeks for a new device or factory reset to optimize. Keep the phone ventilated, charge it in a cool place and reassess after the setup workload has finished.
Software update
Both Apple and Google describe temporary battery impact after an update. Wait a few days, then review the battery screen again. If unusual drain or heat persists beyond that window, treat it as an unresolved issue rather than an inevitable effect of the update.
When to contact support
Contact the phone maker when any of these conditions applies:
- The phone remains unusually hot while idle or in a cool room.
- Temperature warnings recur during ordinary tasks.
- The device shuts down, restarts or refuses to charge because of heat.
- Battery loss remains unusually fast after several days following an update.
- Diagnostics identify a battery-service condition.
Back up important data before service. Do not open the phone or attempt a do-it-yourself battery replacement. A replacement battery is appropriate only when the device’s diagnostics or a qualified service assessment indicates a battery problem; warmth by itself does not establish one.
