Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11If a macOS security or privacy control is grayed out, check three things first: whether Screen Time is blocking changes, whether a work or school administrator manages the Mac, and whether macOS requires an administrator password. These causes have different owners, so the correct fix depends on the exact setting and who controls the Mac.
Do not assume every unavailable control has the same cause or that there is one universal reset. Identify the specific preference, then follow the matching checks below.

Start by identifying the exact setting
“Security settings” can describe several unrelated controls. A disabled privacy permission, Gatekeeper option, FileVault policy, and system-wide advanced preference may each be governed by a different mechanism. Before changing anything, write down the exact name of the unavailable control and the page where it appears.
Also record the macOS version, the account you are using, and whether the Mac belongs to an employer or school. Those details tell Apple Support or an IT administrator which restriction path to investigate. The available evidence supports specific causes for Screen Time privacy restrictions, device-managed Gatekeeper settings, and administrator authentication; it does not establish a complete list of reasons for every macOS control.

Three likely causes, compared
| Possible cause | Who controls it | What it can affect | Who can change it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Screen Time restriction | Screen Time settings, a family organizer, parent or guardian, or whoever knows the Screen Time passcode | Selected privacy and other preference changes | An authorized user with permission to edit Screen Time restrictions |
| Organization policy | A company or school device-management service | Managed security controls such as Gatekeeper, including whether users may override them | The organization’s IT or device administrator |
| Administrator authentication | macOS account and system authorization rules | At least some system-wide options, including an Advanced Privacy & Security option | An authorized administrator account |
A setting can also be unavailable for a reason not documented by the material available for this guide. If none of these checks explains the behavior, escalate with the exact control and system details rather than trying random resets.
Check Screen Time restrictions first
Screen Time can lock selected privacy preferences. On the Mac, open System Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Allow Changes to Settings. Find the category that corresponds to the disabled preference and set it to Allow if you are authorized to make that change.
The restriction is intentional: Apple describes Preference Restrictions as a way to lock selected settings, including controls such as Microphone, Location Services, and Speech Recognition. A gray control therefore does not necessarily indicate a damaged installation or missing system file.

Check who manages Screen Time
The controls shown in Screen Time vary according to whether you are signed in to an Apple Account, whether App & Website Activity is enabled, and whether the account is a parent or guardian managing a child through Family Sharing. Make sure Screen Time is displaying the correct family member before changing anything.

A Screen Time passcode can lock the restrictions themselves. If you do not know that passcode or are managing a child’s account, the parent, guardian, or family organizer may need to approve the change. Do not attempt to bypass a restriction that another authorized person intentionally configured.
If “Allow Changes” is already selected
Confirm that the restriction applies to the same setting you are trying to edit. Screen Time can govern selected preferences rather than every security control. If the affected item is not represented in Allow Changes to Settings, Screen Time may not be the explanation; continue with the management and administrator checks.
Determine whether the Mac is managed by a workplace or school
A Mac enrolled in an organization’s device-management system can receive security policies remotely. This is common on equipment supplied by an employer or educational institution, but the important question is ownership and enrollment: a policy may remain active even when the person using the Mac has local administrator privileges.
Gatekeeper policies can deliberately block overrides
Apple’s deployment documentation describes management settings for Gatekeeper, including a policy that prevents users from using Control-click to open an unidentified app or from installing an app through the Installer app. When such a policy is enforced, the unavailable control is operating as designed by the organization.

Management services implement policies differently, so the visible wording and behavior can vary. Ask the organization’s IT administrator whether a security payload controls the setting, what the policy is intended to permit, and whether an approved exception exists.
Do not remove a management profile as a routine fix
Removing enrollment or a configuration profile can violate workplace or school policy, remove required protections, or leave the Mac unable to access organizational services. Treat management status as an administrative question, not a troubleshooting shortcut. The organization that owns or administers the Mac should make any policy change.
Check whether macOS needs administrator authentication
Some system-wide changes require an administrator password even when the control is visible. Apple’s Advanced Privacy & Security settings include an option to require an administrator password for system-wide settings. If macOS presents an authentication prompt, use an authorized administrator account or ask the Mac’s administrator to authenticate.
This check is narrower than a general explanation for every gray control. An administrator-password requirement documented for one Advanced option does not prove that all unavailable privacy or security settings are caused by using a standard account. If no prompt appears and the control is simply disabled, continue checking Screen Time and device management.

Follow this decision sequence
- Name the control. Record the exact setting label and the System Settings page containing it. Note whether it concerns a privacy permission, Gatekeeper, FileVault, an Advanced option, or another feature.
- Check Screen Time. Go to System Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Allow Changes to Settings. Set the relevant item to Allow only when you have authority to do so.
- Check family context. Verify the selected family member, Apple Account sign-in, App & Website Activity status, and whether a Screen Time passcode or parent-managed account is involved.
- Check ownership and management. If the Mac belongs to a company or school, ask IT whether a device-management policy controls the setting, particularly if the issue concerns Gatekeeper or installing or opening applications.
- Respond to authentication requests. When macOS asks for an administrator password, use an authorized administrator account. A standard user cannot legitimately approve a system-wide change that requires administrator authorization.
- Document what remains. If the control is still unavailable, record the macOS version, account type, management status, Screen Time state, and exact wording of any alert. Give that information to Apple Support or the organization’s administrator.
This sequence separates restrictions by their controlling authority. It avoids treating a family restriction, a corporate policy, and an account-authorization prompt as if they were the same problem.
Use the affected feature to narrow the diagnosis
Privacy permissions
Microphone, Location Services, Speech Recognition, and similar permissions are examples of settings that Screen Time Preference Restrictions can lock. Check Allow Changes to Settings and the family or passcode context before assuming the privacy database is corrupted.
Gatekeeper and unidentified apps
If the disabled control concerns opening an unidentified application, Control-click overrides, or installation through the Installer app, ask whether the Mac is enrolled in organization management. Apple documents a device-management option that can explicitly prevent those overrides. Only the organization’s administrator can confirm whether that policy is active or whether an exception is permitted.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →FileVault and other system-wide security controls
FileVault and other protections may also be governed by device-management policy, but the available documentation does not provide one general FileVault recovery procedure or a universal explanation for every disabled control. Identify the exact preference and ask the Mac’s administrator which policy applies instead of applying instructions intended for Gatekeeper or Screen Time.

Advanced Privacy & Security
For an option under System Settings > Privacy & Security > Advanced, check whether macOS is asking for administrator authentication. If it is, the authorized administrator must approve the change. If the option is gray without an authentication prompt, document that behavior and investigate restrictions or management rather than assuming the account type is solely responsible.
When none of the three checks explains the gray control
Do not delete preference files, disable security protections, or remove organizational enrollment merely because a setting is unavailable. The documented mechanisms are distinct, and the available guidance does not establish a single reset procedure that safely unlocks every macOS security preference.
Prepare a concise escalation report containing:
- The exact setting name and the full System Settings path.
- The macOS version.
- Whether you are using an administrator or standard account.
- Whether the Mac is owned or managed by a workplace or school.
- Whether Screen Time, Family Sharing, or a Screen Time passcode applies.
- The text of any authentication prompt or warning.
- What happened after checking Allow Changes to Settings.
Send those details to Apple Support for a personally owned Mac, or to the organization’s IT administrator for a managed Mac. Apple’s guides document separate restriction systems rather than one recovery workflow, so the exact control and account context determine the next legitimate step.
What “unavailable” does and does not tell you
A gray control tells you that macOS is not allowing the current user or context to change that preference. It does not, by itself, identify whether the cause is Screen Time, a management policy, an administrator requirement, or another condition. The fastest reliable approach is therefore to establish who has authority over the setting and then use that authority’s documented path to change it.
