Blot only the outside with a soft, lint-free cloth, keep all liquids out of openings, and arrange prompt inspection by the manufacturer or an authorized service provider. A device that still works can have hidden liquid damage or corrosion.
First, decide whether the spill is outside or may be inside
A few drops on a sealed exterior surface are a different problem from liquid that reached a charging port, speaker grille, keyboard, hinge, ventilation slot, button gap, or other opening. You usually cannot tell from the device’s behavior whether peroxide traveled farther inside. The safest response is therefore based on the possibility of entry, not on whether the screen still turns on.

What to do immediately
- Disconnect the charger. Unplug the power adapter from the wall and from the device. Remove USB cables, docks, headphones, external drives, and other accessories if you can do so without spreading liquid.
- Power down. If the phone or laptop is operating, shut it down normally when that can be done safely. If the controls are wet or unresponsive, avoid repeated button presses and stop handling it except to isolate it from power.
- Do not charge or turn it back on. Samsung’s liquid-exposure guidance warns that moisture can remain inside and advises against powering a non-water-resistant Galaxy back on. The same precaution is sensible when the model or the extent of entry is unknown.
- Blot the exterior. Use a clean, soft, lint-free cloth, such as microfiber. Dab or wipe the accessible outside surfaces gently; do not push liquid toward a port, seam, keyboard, speaker, or vent.
- Keep more liquid out. Do not spray cleaner, pour water, or apply another product to the device or its openings. Do not attempt to flush an unknown model.
- Arrange inspection promptly. Contact the device manufacturer or an authorized service provider and explain that hydrogen peroxide may have entered the device. Follow the model-specific instructions they give you.
Do not delay human first aid while dealing with the device. If anyone got peroxide in an eye, on skin, or into the mouth, treat that as a separate exposure and contact Poison Control or your local poison service.

Liquid can affect a device without causing an immediate shutdown. Samsung warns that internal damage or corrosion may occur after liquid exposure even when a Galaxy appears to work. Apple likewise directs customers to obtain help as soon as possible if liquid gets inside an Apple product. Continued operation is therefore not a reliable test of safety, and repeatedly checking the device can add power while moisture may still be present.

The available manufacturer instructions address general liquid exposure and cleaning, not a peroxide-specific internal repair procedure. They do not establish that a particular concentration, amount, model, or elapsed time is safe, nor do they guarantee that a device can be recovered. An inspection is the only way for a service professional to assess the affected hardware.
Phone-specific guidance
iPhone and other Apple phones
Apple’s product guidance says to keep liquids away from the product, prevent moisture from entering openings, and not use cleaners containing hydrogen peroxide. If liquid gets inside an Apple product, Apple says to seek help from an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider as soon as possible.
For a phone, the practical steps are to disconnect the cable and accessories, shut down, wipe only the outside, and leave ports and seams alone until a professional has assessed it. Do not interpret water-resistance labeling as permission to rinse with peroxide or to keep using the phone while it is damp.

Samsung Galaxy phones
Samsung’s instructions differ according to the phone’s water-resistance status. For a non-water-resistant Galaxy exposed to liquid, Samsung says to turn it off, remove removable SIM or SD cards and accessories, wipe it with a dry cloth, and visit a service center promptly. It cautions not to turn the phone on because moisture may remain inside.
Samsung also publishes a conditional rinse-and-dry procedure for a water-resistant Galaxy exposed to specified dirty liquids. That instruction is limited to the device types and liquid categories described on Samsung’s page. It is not a general direction for hydrogen peroxide, every Galaxy model, or laptops, so do not extrapolate it to this incident. Samsung recommends service-center inspection even when the phone appears to work.
Laptop-specific guidance
Mac laptops
Apple’s Mac guidance is to shut down, unplug the power adapter, and use a damp, soft, lint-free cloth for exterior cleaning while keeping moisture out of openings. If peroxide may have gone through the keyboard, trackpad, ports, hinge, vents, or another opening, treat it as internal exposure rather than an ordinary surface-cleaning job and contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider promptly.

Do not reconnect the adapter merely to see whether the Mac starts. A laptop can appear normal while liquid remains beneath the keyboard or inside the chassis.

Windows laptops and other models
There is no universal peroxide procedure for every Windows laptop, Chromebook, or other computer. Model construction, battery access, port layout, and manufacturer service rules vary. Use the same immediate sequence—disconnect, shut down, keep it off, wipe the exterior only, and obtain manufacturer or authorized-service guidance—then follow the instructions for that exact model.
If the laptop has a removable battery and the manufacturer’s instructions explicitly permit removing it, follow those instructions. Do not pry open a sealed chassis or attempt a component-level cleaning unless a qualified service professional directs you; opening the device can create additional damage and may affect service or warranty handling.

What not to do
- Do not keep testing it. Repeatedly pressing the power button or reconnecting a charger adds electrical activity while the interior may still be wet.
- Do not use hydrogen-peroxide cleaner on the device. Apple specifically says not to use cleaners containing hydrogen peroxide.
- Do not spray or pour any cleaner into ports, vents, speakers, keyboards, or seams. Exterior wiping is the limited action supported by the manufacturer guidance.
- Do not assume “water-resistant” means peroxide-resistant. The Samsung rinse instruction is conditional and does not cover this general scenario.
- Do not rely on rice, heat, compressed air, or a DIY opening kit. These actions are not supported by the cited manufacturer instructions and can move liquid, introduce debris, or damage components.
- Do not connect accessories to check individual functions. A cable, dock, or peripheral can add power or spread residue before inspection.
When a person was exposed too
Device cleanup must never delay medical first aid. Poison Control reports that 3% hydrogen peroxide in the eye can cause immediate stinging, irritation, tearing, and blurred vision. Its guidance directs people who swallowed hydrogen peroxide or splashed it into an eye or onto skin to use webPOISONCONTROL or contact a poison center. In the United States, the listed poison-center phone number is 1-800-222-1222; outside the United States, use your local poison service.
Poison Control’s first-aid guidance emphasizes that help can make a difference when started within seconds to minutes and points people to poison-center advice after rinsing where applicable. Follow the instructions from the poison center for the concentration and route of exposure involved. Do not wait to see whether the device still works before seeking help for a person.
How to report the incident to service
When you contact the manufacturer or an authorized provider, give the most accurate information you have:

- The exact phone or laptop model, if known.
- Whether the liquid reached a charging port, keyboard, vent, speaker, hinge, or another opening.
- The peroxide concentration if it is printed on the container.
- An estimate of the amount spilled and when it happened.
- Whether the device was powered or charging at the time.
- What you did afterward, including shutdown and any attempted restart.
Do not guess at a prognosis from those details. They help the service provider triage the device, but they cannot replace an inspection.
Warranty and service-cost expectations
Apple states that liquid damage is not covered by Apple product warranty or AppleCare Protection Plans, while also noting that consumers may have rights under applicable law. Coverage and legal rights depend on the region, the plan, and the particular circumstances. Samsung’s support guidance directs users to a service center after liquid exposure but does not establish a universal coverage outcome. Ask the manufacturer or provider for a written assessment and the applicable terms for your location rather than assuming either coverage or denial.
Practical decision checklist
- Power: Is the charger or any accessory still connected? Disconnect it.
- State: Is the device still on? Shut it down safely and do not restart it.
- Liquid path: Could peroxide have reached an opening? If uncertain, assume it may have.
- Exterior: Have you blotted visible moisture without pushing it inward?
- Model instructions: Do you know the exact model and its water-resistance status? Use only instructions that explicitly apply to that model and liquid category.
- Service: Have you contacted the manufacturer or an authorized provider promptly?
- People first: Did anyone have eye, skin, or ingestion exposure? Contact Poison Control or the local poison service separately.
The safest outcome is not determined by whether the screen lights up today. It is determined by removing power, preventing further liquid movement, and obtaining qualified inspection before normal use resumes.
