Start with the safest decision
An unusual Halloween treat is not something to diagnose by taking another bite. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advises consumers to throw away anything that looks suspicious, including candy with an unusual appearance or discoloration, tiny pinholes, or torn wrappers. Those signs justify avoiding the item; they do not, by themselves, prove deliberate tampering.

Move the treat away from children, pets, and other food. Do not offer it to another person, rinse it and eat it, or mix it into a bowl of otherwise normal candy. If it is already open, keep the wrapper, package, and any printed codes if you can do so without unnecessary handling. This information can help match the item to a safety notice or help a regulator or manufacturer investigate a complaint.

FDA consumer guidance also says not to use food that is discolored, moldy, has an off odor, or comes from a damaged or unusual product. Its instructions are practical rather than diagnostic: when you cannot explain the change with confidence, do not eat the item. Inspect the candy without tasting it
Check the wrapper and seal
- Look for a tear, puncture, open seam, loose flap, or a wrapper that does not match the rest of the package.
- Notice tiny holes or pinholes. FDA’s Halloween guidance specifically identifies them as a reason to discard the treat.
- Check whether the inner seal, foil, or film appears broken, missing, or resealed.
- Compare the wrapper’s printing, colors, and product name with another piece from the same original package, if one is available.
A damaged wrapper can result from ordinary handling, transport, or storage. You do not need to determine the cause before deciding not to eat it. Avoiding the item is the appropriate response to an unexplained package problem.
Check the candy itself
- Look for unexpected discoloration, mold, wet spots, crystals, leakage, or a shape that differs markedly from the same product.
- Smell it only from a distance and stop if the odor is sour, chemical, rancid, or otherwise unusual. Do not bring it close to your face or deliberately inhale it.
- If you already took a bite and the flavor is wrong, spit out what remains and do not swallow another sample to “confirm” the taste.
Visual, odor, and taste checks have strict limits. FoodSafety.gov notes that bacteria and viruses that cause foodborne illness may not be visible, smellable, or tasteable. A normal-looking piece is therefore not proof of safety, and an odd flavor cannot identify whether the cause is spoilage, a manufacturing issue, an allergen, contamination, or something else. Read FoodSafety.gov’s guidance on recalled products for the same reason: sensory inspection cannot replace a product notice.
Match the product against official notices
Once the item is isolated, identify it as precisely as possible. A recall or safety alert usually applies only to specific products, sizes, codes, dates, and distribution areas. Use the package rather than memory when searching.

- Write down the product name and brand as printed. Include the flavor, variety, and whether it is individually wrapped, assorted, seasonal, or part of a multipack.
- Record package size and quantity. A notice may cover one bag size but not another.
- Find the UPC or other barcode number. Photograph it if the package is clean and you can do so without manipulating a potentially hazardous item.
- Copy the lot, batch, production, or date code. Also note best-by or use-by information and the package format.
- Check where it was sold or distributed. A notice may be limited to certain states, stores, dates, or distribution channels.
- Read the complete notice. Confirm that every identifying detail matches before deciding whether the alert applies, and follow the notice’s return or disposal instructions.
FDA explains the identifiers and matching process in Food Recalls: What You Need to Know. If the notice says the product is recalled, do not eat it even if the piece looks and tastes normal. Keep it separated from other food while you follow the stated disposal or return directions.

Check allergen alerts, not only contamination recalls
A candy can look completely ordinary and still be unsafe for someone with an allergy. Compare the ingredient list and allergen statement with the person’s known allergies, then search current FDA safety alerts for undeclared allergens. Do not rely on a familiar wrapper or a candy’s usual recipe.
For example, FDA published an alert on August 31, 2026, concerning Chocolatey Eyeballs after milk was not declared on the label. If an allergic person may have eaten a product with an undeclared allergen, do not wait for the wrapper to change or for a second taste. Follow that person’s established medical action plan and contact a health care provider. A suspected allergy exposure is a medical question, not something a visual inspection can clear.
What if someone already ate it?
If there are no symptoms
Stop further eating, retain the package and codes, and check recall and allergen notices. Do not induce vomiting or take an unprescribed remedy based only on a rumor or a photograph. If the person remains well, the key next step is accurate identification and monitoring for any change in health.
If symptoms appear
Contact a health care provider and describe what was eaten, how much, when it was eaten, and any product or lot information. Keep the wrapper or container available so the clinician can assess a possible recall or allergen exposure. If the person has a known allergy, use the emergency plan supplied by their clinician.

FDA accepts reports about food-related illness and suspected product tampering. Its FDA 101: How to Use the Consumer Complaint System and MedWatch explains how to submit a consumer complaint. A report is appropriate even when you cannot prove what caused the change; describe observable facts and preserve the identifying information.
How to report suspected tampering or a food complaint
- Secure the facts. Note where and when the candy was obtained, who handled it, what looked or tasted unusual, and whether anyone consumed it.
- Keep the original packaging. Do not alter, wash, or rewrap it. If keeping it is impractical, photograph the label, codes, wrapper damage, and product before disposal, provided this can be done safely.
- Check the applicable notice first. A listed recall or allergy alert may provide a dedicated contact, refund, or disposal procedure.
- Contact the seller or manufacturer when appropriate. Provide the exact product details and explain only what you observed; avoid asserting deliberate tampering without evidence.
- Use FDA’s complaint process. Follow the instructions in the FDA consumer complaint and MedWatch guidance, and provide health information if someone became ill.
- Follow local instructions. If local public-health or law-enforcement authorities ask you to retain or surrender the item, follow their directions rather than discarding it immediately.
Do not post a photograph as proof that a product was poisoned. Images cannot establish contamination, and spreading an unverified claim can cause unnecessary alarm.

Common situations and the safest response

Why a normal piece is not a guarantee
People often expect a dangerous sweet to have a telltale smell, color, or flavor. That assumption is unsafe. Some hazards cannot be detected by the senses, while harmless storage or manufacturing changes can make a product look unusual. The available guidance does not provide a candy-specific visual or taste test that can distinguish those causes from one another.

Accordingly, do not diagnose a piece from a photo or a description such as “it has white spots.” When the change is unexplained, the supported decision is avoidance, product identification, and checking official information. Contact the manufacturer or regulator if you need clarification about a particular package.
Practical Halloween handling that reduces risk
- Keep commercially wrapped treats separate from homemade or unpackaged foods until an adult can inspect them.
- Inspect wrappers in good light before distributing candy, and remove anything open, leaking, or visibly damaged.
- Keep packages with their labels and codes until the candy has been eaten, especially when serving people with food allergies.
- Store candy in a cool, dry place and follow the package’s storage directions; do not combine newly purchased candy with an item already under investigation.
- Teach children to bring treats to an adult before eating and never to taste an unfamiliar or damaged piece to test it.
These habits do not make every sensory change explainable, but they preserve the information needed to act on a real recall or allergen alert.
Bottom line for an odd-looking or odd-tasting treat
When Halloween candy looks or tastes different than expected, treat the difference as a reason to stop, not a challenge to investigate with another bite. Isolate the item, inspect its package without unnecessary handling, record the product identifiers, and compare them with current FDA and FoodSafety.gov notices. Throw away suspicious candy as FDA advises, follow any recall’s specific instructions, and seek medical advice if anyone becomes ill or may have been exposed to an undeclared allergen.
