You do not place candles on Grandpa’s Shrine. They show the result of Grandpa’s farm evaluation, which first happens at the beginning of Year 3. If you have fewer than four candles, keep improving your farm and put a Diamond in the shrine to request another evaluation; once all four are lit, interact with the shrine to claim the Statue of Perfection.
Why Grandpa’s Shrine has no candles
The shrine is in the northwest corner of your farm. Its note reads, “Wait for my return at the dawn of the 3rd year.” The candles are a display of your evaluation score, not items you craft or set out yourself. The Stardew Valley Wiki’s current scoring guide maps evaluation points to candles as follows: Grandpa evaluation details.

How to improve a low candle result
Grandpa’s evaluation awards points for different kinds of farm progress, including lifetime earnings, skills and milestones, keys, Community Center progress, achievements, and relationships. You do not need every possible milestone to earn four candles. Build progress in the categories that make sense for your save, then use a Diamond to request reevaluation.

- Keep progressing. Work toward evaluation points through earnings, skills, milestones, keys, Community Center progress, achievements, or relationships. You do not need to start a new save.
- Place a Diamond in the shrine. This requests a reevaluation. The wiki says Grandpa generally reappears the next day after a game load, though some cases are deferred until the first day of the next season.
- Claim the reward when all four candles are lit. Interact with the shrine to receive the Statue of Perfection.
What the four candles unlock
The Statue of Perfection produces 2–8 Iridium Ore per day, according to the Stardew Valley Wiki’s Statue of Perfection entry. Reaching four candles does not automatically put the statue in your inventory: interact with the shrine to collect it.
